Let's pause for a minute and recognize how a baked potato, prepared correctly, is a near-perfcet snack

I was literally a second from going to the Bell. Had my coat on. Then realized I had some taters. Well, brother, I cooked them shits up, in the microwave (7 minutes), topped 'em with salt, black pepper, shredded fiesta cheese, bac'n pieces and butter, and boy is it good.

Think about it - inexpensive, cruelty-free (if you're into that) and easy to prepare. Unless you're counting carbs like some spandex wearing health food faggot, relatively good for you, too.

Glory be to the tubers.

i like slamming my fist into them.

Cruelty-free?

Casuistry (Chris P), Sunday, 28 November 2004 02:08 (twenty-one years ago)

well, unless you count the manure required to grow it, it contains no animal byproducts.

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Sunday, 28 November 2004 02:18 (twenty-one years ago)

potato mysticism

ke[hm, Sunday, 28 November 2004 02:32 (twenty-one years ago)

it contains no animal byproducts.

If you leave off the butter and cheese.

That potato mysticism thread is genuis!

Orbit (Orbit), Sunday, 28 November 2004 03:29 (twenty-one years ago)

clearly it's all about the radiation periphery

Matt (Matt), Sunday, 28 November 2004 03:47 (twenty-one years ago)

But seeing as how this thread title includes the words "prepared correctly" it seems only fair to point out that microwaving potatoes is WRONGER THAN NAZIS.

Matt (Matt), Sunday, 28 November 2004 03:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Hahaha!!

I Am Curious (George) (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 28 November 2004 03:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually if you nuke it for a little bit and then bake it the rest of the way it's much faster and tastes pretty much as good.

Casuistry (Chris P), Sunday, 28 November 2004 03:56 (twenty-one years ago)

T/S: do you bake them wrapped in foil or naked? I've read lots of opinions that there's something wrong with the texture of spuds baked in foil, but as long as I use nice starchy russets, they always come out perfect and fluffy. And the skins are tender enough to eat.

I Am Curious (George) (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 28 November 2004 04:02 (twenty-one years ago)

i much prefer the baking method, but i'm lazy / hungry, and i always get drunk and forget it's in there. So I microwave. I used to not use microwaves at all - something about the prospect of cooking with radiation - but for the first two months in our new house, we had no stove, so, take THAT, beliefs!

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Sunday, 28 November 2004 04:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Rub potato with oil, salt skin heavily, bake. Upon removing potato from oven wrap it in a towel and hit it firmly with your hand to fluff the inside a bit. That is all. There really is no other way.

Obviously you must eat this with plenty of butter. To deny butter is to deny life.

x-post, if you have no oven then fair enough, but then your primary directive is to get a goddamn oven

Matt (Matt), Sunday, 28 November 2004 04:20 (twenty-one years ago)

To deny butter is to deny life.

This is deep wisdom.

Orbit (Orbit), Sunday, 28 November 2004 04:23 (twenty-one years ago)

To open a potato, prick it with a fork twice to form an X. Then squeeze it. It will burst along the X perfectly.

I've never done anything like oiling or salting a potato before baking it, and they have come out just fine. Oiling couldn't hurt, though (I'm not sure what salting would do).

Casuistry (Chris P), Sunday, 28 November 2004 05:26 (twenty-one years ago)

matt - i'm totally trying that later tonight whern teh beer waesars off

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Sunday, 28 November 2004 05:32 (twenty-one years ago)

the best is cooking them by a campfire by putting them under a bed of hot rocks wrapped in foil

fuck yeaaa

7 minutes in the microwave is nowhere near enough!

Cathy (Cathy), Sunday, 28 November 2004 16:45 (twenty-one years ago)

In my oven they take nearly 2 hours. I will have wasted away by then :(

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 28 November 2004 16:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I give them 5 minutes in the microwave then 20-25 in a very hot oven. If I just microwave them they always come out all hard and disgusting.

Cathy (Cathy), Sunday, 28 November 2004 17:10 (twenty-one years ago)

i used to put a whole bunch of them in the oven from time to time, baking at a low(ish) heat for like 4 hours. the flavor comes out stronger that way--they're really really good. then i'd throw the extras in the fridge, to microwave for whenever.

JuliaA (j_bdules), Sunday, 28 November 2004 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Salting the outside is supposed to make them go crispy. We used to have this little shop which sold baked potatos with various toppings and butter, salt, pepper, cheese was my favourite. So cheap and so tasty. Unaccountably it went out of business and now there is a Subway there.

This thread title reminds me of Francis Ponge.

Actually, come to think of it, I think he has a piece about boiling potatoes.

"Snack"?

Meal, surely, you fat bastard.
