Hank Azaria
Apu, Chief Wiggum, Moe Syzlak, Carl, Comic Book Store Guy, Spanish Bee guy, Professor Frink, Dr. Nick Riviera, Mr. Van Houten, Snake, Generic geeky teenager

Harry Shearer
Montgomery Burns, Waylon Smithers, Ned Flanders, Seymour Skinner, Kent Brockman, Lenny, Dr. Julius Hibbert, Dr. Marvin Monroe, Jasper, McBain, Otto, Rev. Lovejoy, Herman

obviously they are all genius, but if you had to pick one over the others. those aren't full lists of every character they play, but it gives you an idea. i just picked the 3 who do the most heavy lifting on the show. no offense to marge and lisa and bart. i might have to go with homer's creator. even if he only did homer, krusty, and barney i might have to choo-choo-choose him.

(i didn't check if this had been done. if so, sorry.)

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Sexist.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Was Harry Shearer the same guy as the bassist in Spinal Tap? If so I pick him. (jazz odyssey etc)

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Gotta be Azaria for me. Based just on the characters they play, it'd be a toss-up between Azaria and Shearer -- but Shearer loses points for his characters sounding too similar sometimes (i.e., too much like Shearer's trademark nasal voice) (just think of Brockman, Skinner, and Smithers).

Sanjay McDougal (jaymc), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 15:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeardley Smith I think only does Lisa Simpson's voice.

x-post YES HE IS (also the bassist in TEH FOLKSMEN from A Mighty Wind)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 15:59 (twenty-one years ago)

azaria all the way. and he's a real looker too!

i mean homer, homer's dad and krusty all sound alike-ish but apu and wiggum and moe...that's some kind of scary genius there.

has to be said also that wiggum's is the only voice on the show
(well i mean seasons 2-6 at least) to crack me up immaterial of what was actually getting said. just his 'umm-um ummm ahh' stuff
or say his vocal warm ups in the barbershop one, sorry but i'm in hysterics.

piscesboy, Tuesday, 30 November 2004 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

that show hasn't been funny in years

trigonalmayhem (trigonalmayhem), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

For all these years I assumed Snake (a baritone) was Dan Castellaneta. Hank Azaria has one of the most versatile voices.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 16:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Who voices Ralph Wiggum?

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, i wasn't trying to be sexist. fer real. it's just that those three do SO MANY great voices. the rest are all genius too.

i can't find a complete list of characters on the web. (who does who) if anyone knows of one....

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

bart does ralph.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

nancy cartright that is. she does nelson too.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

TALKING IN FUNNY VOICES IS PURE GENIUS!

PURE
UNADULTERATED
GENIUS!

meanwhile physicists and mathematicians are crying in their labs and offices.

trigonalmayhem (trigonalmayhem), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 16:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Azaria. Also, I've been watching his new show Huff and I'm fairly impressed with his acting in that so far.

It's hard to kill a horse with a flute (AaronHz), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 16:04 (twenty-one years ago)

"meanwhile physicists and mathematicians are crying in their labs and offices."

by all means, start a mathematician thread. i'll be the one snoring in the corner.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 16:06 (twenty-one years ago)

can i vote for the guy who does the voice of the limo driver in the episode where homer and marge are reminising about their prom night.

"where to now Romeo?"

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 16:08 (twenty-one years ago)

all those great conversations that homer and barnie have: the work of one man!!

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 16:09 (twenty-one years ago)

i wanted to try and single out some writers as actual geniuses, but looking at the episode credits, there are so many different writers credited but only ever one or two per episode. i find this very odd and can only assume that the show has always worked with a 'base pool' into which everyone contributes ideas and jokes which can then be applied to the appropriate stories and situations as and when they're cooked up.

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 16:09 (twenty-one years ago)

that's azaria. the limo guy. wow, i guess it's unanimous. well, he is a genius.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 16:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Complete list of characters and their voices (although listed by character, not voice)

Sanjay McDougal (jaymc), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 16:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Nancy Cartright typically does nearly all the children's voices, male or female. Martin, Milhouse, Ralph, the twins that pick on Lisa, etc.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 16:12 (twenty-one years ago)

everyone says that the simpsons would not be the simpsons without george meyer.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 16:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess I'm just a corny PC-fuck but Azaria's hyper-stereotypical gay and Hispanic voices annoy me (and hey, he combined them for his character in The Birdcage!), plus all of his Hispanic voices sound the same. I vote for Shearer.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

This article convinced me of that, Scott.

Sanjay McDougal (jaymc), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 16:17 (twenty-one years ago)

What gay and/or Hispanic characters does Azaria do on The Simpsons, though -- apart from Bumblebee Guy?

Sanjay McDougal (jaymc), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 16:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Not major characters, but bit unnamed characters. See the SIMPSONS GO TO BRAZIL episode for instance.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 16:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Harry Shearer is my favorite, especially because he admits the Simpsons has been awful for the past few years.

Leon the Fratboy (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

On the Simpsons I think Azaria is the greatest vocal genius, but only barely. When you add all his other work, though, Shearer, (Le Show, Spinal Tap, Mighty Wind, etc...) has the most impressive resume. Because of Homer, Castellaneta will probably have the greatest influence over the workings of my subconscious.

Michael White (Hereward), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

ha, quote from Mike Scully in that article linked to; "People are always asking why ‘The Simpsons’ is still so good after all these years, "

funny all i ever hear is people saying how much it's sucked this decade, or just insisting it's still funny but admitting not what it was.

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

oh the article dates from the 11th season tho - and it does paint Meyer as some kind of comedic deity, tho i'd probably agree based on the evidence provided.

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 16:26 (twenty-one years ago)

my memory has gone completely - Troy Mclure guy who got shot by his hopped up on goofballs wife

Porkpie (porkpie), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 16:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Azaria. Everyone's great but (and I have reservations about the stereotypical racial caricature quotient of Apu, mostly assuaged by the loving way in which his lines are written, which mostly posit him as one of the most likable characters in the chow - and I guess the US doesn't have quite the damaging history of racial stereotyping that Indians have suffered in the UK) Azaria just kills me every time. I love him when he appears in movies and TV too.

Shearer sounds like hell to work with. No-one on SNL has anything nice to say about him, and he comes across very snooty and snippy in the SNL oral history. If he thinks the show is awful now (which it is not) he should shit or get off the pot and quit. His high standards seem quite easily quelled by paychecks.

stevie (stevie), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 16:27 (twenty-one years ago)

it really is awful now! excuse my broken recordness but watching it even for a few seconds i end up feeling actually angry nine times out of ten.

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 16:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I was all set to go with Shearer (c'mon, there's a wide range between Skinner, Flanders, and Burns, to name just 3), but Azaria being the limo/brooklyn sheister guy swayed me towards him.
oh, and trigonal is a dink.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 16:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Porkpie -- that's Phil Hartman.

Sanjay McDougal (jaymc), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 16:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Reading through the list of who voiced who from that link up there...I suddenly really REALLY miss Phil Hartman BAD all over again.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

who does Gil? not that i like him or his voice much.

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 16:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Castellaneta, apparently.

Sanjay McDougal (jaymc), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

hank, if only for snake.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 16:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Phil Hartman was the greatest.

Leon the Fratboy (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 16:44 (twenty-one years ago)

ARRRRR! it be Harry Shearer for me, ye landlubbers.

Cap'n McAllister (rener), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 16:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't shortchange Yeardley Smith! She did Lisabella in the "Tappa tappa tappa" episode.

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 16:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Doesn't Yeardley Smith do BART!?!?! What the hell? Either way it's got to be Castellaneta.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Nancy Cartwright = Bart.

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 16:49 (twenty-one years ago)

for some reason it's unbelievable to me that harry shearer does lenny!!!

yeah, i read that snl thing about him being the biggest jerk. but lots of people in comedy are jerks.

and as far as the simpsons sucking now, well, i'll still take a sucky simpsons over most anything else on t.v. any day.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 16:54 (twenty-one years ago)

i'll just turn my tv off

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 17:02 (twenty-one years ago)

who does millhouse?

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 17:04 (twenty-one years ago)

that guy with only one arm (EPISODE LEFT ON CUTTING ROOM FLOOR)

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 17:08 (twenty-one years ago)

The network would probably threaten to shoot his family if he (or any of them) tried to leave, the show would be over.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 17:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Fox Is Evil Part 29384825

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

plz the network is very willing to replace them any day they feel like walking, as voice actors go they're (deservedly) highly compensated.

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 17:25 (twenty-one years ago)

throw my vote in the azaria pile

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 17:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Are they replaceable? Or rather, would the network have to hire a lot more voice actors to accurately replicate all those character voices?

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

there were rumours of the show finishing when Cartwright (i think) threatened to leave over pay dispute (probably not earning as much as the males?) - so the voice actors do have considerable power. the reason they stupidly killed off Maude is because the actor who voiced her decided to quit the show.

the voices of Homer, Marge, Lisa and Bart have all changed noticeably over the years I think. they all sound much more irritating as their nuances have been exaggerated and heightened more.

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

OTM, the show has gone down the toilet

latebloomer (latebloomer), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 17:43 (twenty-one years ago)

...ever since it lost its heart!

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 00:47 (twenty-one years ago)

i was just watching 2nite. it doesn't get much better than: "He's bad, but he'll die, so I like it."

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 00:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I vote Castellenata, because he's the only actor who also did a voice in Futurama (the Robot Devil).

I'd rather talk about Futurama's voice actors: Billy West is brilliant and a one-man talkin' machine, and even though he does a lot less voices, John DiMaggio is hilarious.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 00:58 (twenty-one years ago)

DiMaggio's everyday voice is exactly like Bender's! I think there's a little Bender in all of us.

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 01:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Believe it or don't, Nancy Cartwright's everyday voice is just like Bart's. (According to my wife, who coached her in forensics back at Ohio University.)

I Am Curious (George) (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 02:02 (twenty-one years ago)

if Castellenata did the robot devil he wins because i freakin love the robot devil. now if i can only find out who did Hedonism Bot...

ryan (ryan), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 02:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah DiMaggio is totally the same, I love listening to the Futurama commentaries, he cackles all the way thru them and cracks jokes, he seems like a guy who'd be great to have a beer with.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 02:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Shearer - Snake and Dr Nick are awesome, but my allegiance lies with Brockman/Burns/McBain/Hibbert.

M1chael Ph1lip Ph1lip Ph1lip Ph1lip Ph1lip Ann0yman (Ferg), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 02:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Billy West is beyond genius. He is treading on Blanc territory.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 02:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I agree 100%. I love the man.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 03:01 (twenty-one years ago)
