Sports Team Nicknames

This is old news, really, but with the coming of basketball season, I always lament the consolidation of the Everly (Iowa) school district, and the loss of the Everly Cattle Feeders athletic teams, particulary the powerhouse Cattle Feederettes girls' basketball program.

What unusual team nicknames exist in your neck of the the woods?

briania (briania), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Some time ago, ESPN listed a top ten:

1.)SYRUPMAKERS of Cairo,GA.
2.)BEETDIGGERS of Brush,Colo.
3.)NIMRODS of Watersmeet, MI.
4.)IMPS of Cary,N.C.
5.)ATOMSMASHERS of Jonhson Prep, Savannah,GA.
6.)ANGORAS of Clarkston,GA.
7.)FLIVVERS of Kingsford,MI.
8.)SQUIRRELS of Winslow,AZ.

Two local high school teams:

Glenville Tarblooders
East Tech Golden Scarabs

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 16:26 (twenty-one years ago)

spireites

Porkpie (porkpie), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 16:28 (twenty-one years ago)

WEST ALLOTMENT CELTIC

Jesus Christ, Paraplegic (Mark C), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 16:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Real Walford.

Madchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 16:31 (twenty-one years ago)

No way would I want to wrestle against a Tarblooder!

briania (briania), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Until a few years ago: the Pekin (Ill.) Chinks!

I also read about a team in Texas called the Satans that had to change their nickname due to pressure from the Baptists.

briania (briania), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 16:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I wouldn't broach the subject of wrestling against a Golden Scarab either.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 16:55 (twenty-one years ago)

It often happens that when two small school districts consolidate, they combine the nicknames. Hence, the Sigourney-Keota Savage Cobras, which would be bad-ass for a street gang, let alone a volleyball team.

And Ft. Madison, Iowa -- home to the state pen -- proudly cheers its Bloodhounds.

briania (briania), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 17:01 (twenty-one years ago)

- Go Sandgrinders! (Southport FC)
- Up the Bullywee! (Clyde FC)
- Come one you Shrimpers! (Southend United FC)

And although they're not madly nicknamed, the Scranton-Wilks-Barre Redbarons is a bit of a handful.

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 17:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Curse you, Redbarons!

briania (briania), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Not my neck of the woods, but how 'bout them South Carolina Lady Gamecocks?

I Am Curious (George) (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 17:43 (twenty-one years ago)

here in madison
west high is on regent street,
their team: The Regents

east high's colors are
purple and gold so they are
The Purgolders (bleh)

but monroe is best:
their team (wisconsin-blessed*)
are The Cheesemakers

(*pronounced bless-ed, natch)

Haibun (Begs2Differ), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 17:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I was going to say Bully Wee, purely because Clyde get no love anywhere. Except in my house. I don't find it weird, maybe because I have listen to people singing about them a lot.

I like all the really crap Scottish ones like the Red Lichties and The Doonhamers as well. Dundee United are known as the Arabs, apparently because there used to be a lot of sand on the pitch at Tannadice.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 17:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Everton's nickname as the Toffees (or Toffeemen) might be quite unusual in that I've never heard an Evertonian use that expression. Nor, to my knowledge, are there any terrace chants/songs referencing our toffeeness. (Please don't post the lyrics to "Here We Go" or somesuch to prove me wrong).

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 17:57 (twenty-one years ago)

IN the 1960s (it is said) Dundee United had to put sand on the pitch and a report in a paper said 'United took to the sand like arabs'

How could we also forget the Gable Endies? And Rangers' nickname of 'Hun bastards' is kind of endearing.

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 18:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Also Cowdenbeath = The Blue Brazil (as a result, various wags have subsequently nicknamed Brazil "the Yellow Cowdenbeath")

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 18:03 (twenty-one years ago)

That has to be a piss take surely? When have Cowdenbeath (never mind the nickname, the actual name is pretty weird) been good enough to make someone think it was a bloody good comparison.

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 18:19 (twenty-one years ago)

The Warren Lumberjacks
UA-Monticello Boll Weevils
Alma Airedales
Conway Wampus Cats
Petit Jean Littlejohns
Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys
Fordyce Redbugs
Harrison Goblins
The Joe T. Robinson Senators
Southern Arkansas Lady Mule Riders

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 18:24 (twenty-one years ago)

OMG, the Harrison GOBLINS!? I have kin down there, and never knew this! Next trip south, I'm looking for Goblins and Wampus Cats team merch (of course, thanks to ILX, the word "Ass" is now permanently juxtaposed with "Goblin" in my personal glossary).

And just who rides a Lady Mule?

briania (briania), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 19:04 (twenty-one years ago)

No, no, no. It's not lady mules, it's ... oh nevermind.

Everyone has heard of the Arkansas Razorbacks, but the women's basketball team is affectionately called "The Lady 'Backs".

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 19:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Just foolin' on the Lady Mule Riders. "Lady" or "-ettes" affixed to any nickname offers comic possibilites -- Lady Bulldogs, Lady Bears, Scorpionettes. The girls' teams at Iowa City West, not wanting to be known as the Lady Trojans (or, my choice, "Trojans for Her") call themselves the Women of Troy. :(

Please tell me that Harrison is home to the Goblinettes!

briania (briania), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 19:42 (twenty-one years ago)

minor league baseball teams in the regional leagues here include the Lowell Spinners and the Batavia Muckdogs.

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 21:44 (twenty-one years ago)

The more I look at this thread, the more perplexed I am by Dave B's confusion/indignation over the "Blue Brazil" thing. Yes, it's a joke. I don't really anyone really thinks Cowdenbeath could win the World Cup. Now, Stenhousemuir, on the other hand...

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 21:48 (twenty-one years ago)

(there's another "think" in there somewhere. And maybe less "really"s)

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought so; I couldn't be arsed to check on googlewondered whether in the olden days they had been quite good, and someone quaint news reporter said 'they're like the blue brazil, such is the speed of their movement and skillful passing' etc.

Any fule no this year, more than any other year, East Stirling are going win the big one. (Big One=they will win one big fat game all season).

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 22:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Didn't there used to be an all-women's football team called Old Fallopians?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 22:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know about that, but there is one in Glasgow called the Lesbian Lions. Ha ha. How amusing.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 23:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I've always imagined the East Westchester Northstars (southern division) would be a fairly reasonable hockey name.
