Howard Caygill, philosophy dude

My friend, the evil CR, is much to my delight/annoyance (am ambivalent, you see, fwendly feelings clash with jealous feelings) becoming a great success up at Lancaster uni on his bizarre history/philosophy course. So much in fact that his tutor is trying to pimp him off to various other professors (not literally though) for his M.A. and I'm sure his eventual PhD. A name that keeps cropping up is the aforementioned Howard Caygill, who is the philosophy professor at Goldsmith's college (I think), and that's all I really know. So does anyone here know anything about this fellow? This isn't for CR by the way, it's me being a snoop.

New investigative answers!

Howard Caygill is so cute! I had one lecture with him, and I really liked it even though it was about Derrida and a wee bit over my head. But my friends who took his course all seem to love him.

He pronounces his r's funny, and he has a funny arse. Wot: Another post mentioning Derrida. Surely Rule Of Three should be invoked.

what about pokey the puppy!?!

mark s, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Pokey the Puppy = no connection to the evil CR, which is why I didn't ask about him.

DG, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

aw!

Is Pokey The Puppy related to Pokey The Penguin?

RickyT, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What are the chances of me starting a thread about Pokey the Penguin ending up about Howard Caygill?

DG, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh, I know this one. Probably about 100% if you start it in the next ten minutes.

Pete, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yes, I do. My loose association with HC, so tenuous that it blows away in a strong breeze, goes back to 1994, believe it or not. Many things do.

He is a mastermind re. sociology and philosophy, but also knows far too much re. history, politics, literature, criticism, art, languages, travel, child-rearing, technology, and the rest. I sometimes try to remember those days, but it's grown hazy. Grey light on grey tables. Indigestible chunks of Hegel. Bad doughnuts.

Who is Pokey the Penguin?

rosemary, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

God's teeth! CR will be intolerable if he hangs around with Mr Caygill then.

DG, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Indigestible chunks of Hegel": if there are other kinds of hegel-chunk I haf not discovered them

i nearly started a hegel thread on sat'day, based solely on the fact that there was already a thread abt hairgel: luckily for all the linking gag would not materialise, despite literally seconds of thought

I have a lot of time for Howard Caygill's work, although I have never encountered him in person. He was one of Gillian Rose's students, and I think moved with her from Sussex to Warwick. He has written elegantly and intelligently on Kant, Heidegger and Benjamin among others, and I was reading a lovely piece by him on Hegel's philosophy of the absolute as a complex monochrome last night.

I think I'll start some sort of 'Pokey the Puppy *IS* Derrida' campaign next time he's over here in spring.

eleven years pass...

I didn't expect to see this name come up while searching around. Everybody who encounters Howard quickly develops an intense intellectual crush on him. He has a new book out soon, I bet it will be good http://www.amazon.co.uk/On-Resistance-A-Philosophy-Defiance/dp/1472522583/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1378560030&sr=8-1&keywords=caygill+resistance
