Taking Sides: James Herbert vs Guy N Smith

James had his rats and GNS had his CRABS - both staples of school camping trips etc, one boy wd have dog-eared copy of 'DOMAIN' and would recount the gory bits. I was too wussy to read either but Guy N Smith's books looked considerably madder.

Other pulp horror writers can join in too!

Herbert's early bks for NEL - 'The Rats', 'The Fog' - are like Richard Allen novs w/ extra blud and are therefore CLASSIC. He went right off the boil when he started to think of himself as a 'proper' writer, whereas Guy N. Smith was just a Herbert copyist who stuck to his guns - ie no 'character development' or 'fine writing' for him! Smith had some great titles too - 'The Slime Beast', 'The Sucking Pit', 'Crabs On The Rampage' and 'Crabs' Moon'!

Wither Shaun Hutson?

What about Ramsey Campbell? Or is he higher class?

GUY N SMITH! One of his books, 'Caracel', featured a wildcat on the loose and on the prowl in London City! (yeah, yeah, it was a bit likee 'American Werewolf in Lahndahn'). Best bit: where the Caracal clawws out some copper's EYES! so they hang down on his cheeks.
Good (ie crap) stuff.
But what about Shaun Hutson? Eh?
