Architecture from Los Angles and its Environs in the 1950s-1960s . Its so clean and gleaming and popart racing towards the future. These clean and elegant castles look thru glass and steel to the lights of hollywood. The ones with pools that glide like serpants and are stuck on improable cliffs . Are there any more beutiful buildings ?

Oh! Oh! Drooooool. If you've seen the Jetsons-looking house in Charlie's Angels you've seen the world's best example. This house is owned by pervy art book publisher Benedikt Taschen.

Actually, that reminds me about this insanely wonderful place at the north end of the San Fernando Valley that's Mai Tai central, if only for the amazing goddamn view you get at sunset while you're having your drink. I think an ILx meet-up there when Anthony is in town is on the cards. Suzy has to fly in, of course. ;-) In fact, everyone should fly in! Woohoo!

suzy, Tuesday, 27 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Actually among a bunch of things i was inspired by your essay Momus .

anthony, Tuesday, 27 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

A good essay it was indeed. I already wrote him to say that the reason why we're here is that even if it takes a while to plan things, the weather is always nice. :-) Even today -- it's a cold winter wind that's been blowing fiercely since last night, but the sky is scrubbed clean of smog, you can see the mountains, no clouds and just a deep blue. Perfect!

I saw a fabulous exhibition of Julius Shulman's architectural photography a few months ago that captures that 50s/60s self- conscious modernism beautifully. Website here:

Yeah, it's perfect here. No it isn't. Yes it is. No it isn't. Yes it is. Southern California: The Land of Befuddlement. I liked your essay, too, Momus. I loved your assessment of the Silverlake/Echo Park scene, it was very funny. And accurate.

Ann Magnuson lives in a Neutra house in Silverlake. It's kinda boring. Pre-50s, though. John Lautner's Chemosphere house was featured in Body Double and Diamonds Are Forever. And then there's the Blade Runner house in Los Feliz, Frank Lloyd Wright's Ennis-Brown house. That's not mid-century, either, though, it was built in the 20s.

There are loads of beautiful non-Modernist buildings here, particularly the Craftsman mansions in Pasadena. Also, strange folk art homes, like the Witch House in Beverly Hills.

Yes, let's go on an architectural tour when you visit, Anthony (Suzy, too!) , along with the Graveline Tour. And that mai tai place sounds excellent, Ned.
