How to make yourself known on ILX.....

So, you start up on here, you are a name (or pseudonym) amongst many, and no-one really knows you from Adam. So you have two ways of going.

1) Make loads of postings that express your individuality, viewpoints, and follow up on FAPS so your visibility is maximised,

2) Specialise in a particular field, and post on a scheduled basis about said topic,

3) Do something daft/ridic/crazy that then has you labelled as "Oh xxx, (s)he's the one that ..............."

OK, that's three things...

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 14 January 2005 11:58 (twenty-one years ago)

You're the one that what then?

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:02 (twenty-one years ago)

... I love the English language

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Specialise in a particular field, and post on a scheduled basis about said topic

Note to self: must post at least one computer related post every 72 hours.

poor adam!

ken c (ken c), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:06 (twenty-one years ago)

way to success is surely a snappy username

ken c (ken c), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Sure is!

Alligator (caitlin), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:09 (twenty-one years ago)

i would be flattered if people got adam and me confused. adam is cool!

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Should *I* be flattered if people get you and me confused, though?

caitlin (caitlin), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:15 (twenty-one years ago)

no, i'm not cool.

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I've been posting here for over a year and I still feel incredibly anonymous. I don't think I'm notorious for anything except posting try-hard posey pics of myself.

papa november (papa november), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:19 (twenty-one years ago)

i've heard peeing on yourself is a good way to gain notoriety.

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:29 (twenty-one years ago)

.. which prompted this thread...

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Being a complete twat to everyone else seems to make you very popular on here.

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:32 (twenty-one years ago)

kate, you're the one with the wicked makeup and stuff, right? every time you post a picture, i think 'oh my god, that's so amazing! i wish i had the patience and creativity to do that!'

sorry, i was going to say that on the photo thread and forgot, so i thought i'd add it here...

colette (a2lette), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:33 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost. i am stupid.

being a complete twat makes you very popular in real life too!

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha! Thanks. Most of the time I can't be bothered with the whole makeup thing, then I get bored and go crazy. I'm glad I'm memorable for something at least :)

xpost

papa november (papa november), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it's human nature to feel as though you're not popular or well known. I've always tried to take ILX as I find it and I've no idea if I'm well known / regarded or not. Anything else is madness. Besides, I've been here a couple of years now, it doesn't change that much....

Matt (Matt), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:36 (twenty-one years ago)

caitlin, this is true

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:36 (twenty-one years ago)

haha xpost whenever you post i imagine you sitting at the computer wearing a wig and crazy eye makeup.

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:37 (twenty-one years ago)

ste i don't remember you ever being very popular on here..

ken c (ken c), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:38 (twenty-one years ago)

(see what i did there??????)

(KIDDIN'! BTW)

ken c (ken c), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd really rather be less know. And therefore less hated, but then again, that probably wouldn't make a difference.

Masonic Boom-Boom (kate), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:39 (twenty-one years ago)

You're hated? Really? I find that hard to believe.

caitlin (caitlin), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:39 (twenty-one years ago)

you're not hated are you kate? i always saw you as one of the ilx originals?

ha xpost

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:40 (twenty-one years ago)

(Sorry, it's a running joke, actually, that everybody on the interweb haaaaaaaaaates me, thus getting to a point about five or six years ago where there was a slogan "Don't Hate Kate" with t-shirts and a band named after it and everything. I guess that's a good schtick.)

Masonic Boom-Boom (kate), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:43 (twenty-one years ago)

haha xpost whenever you post i imagine you sitting at the computer wearing a wig and crazy eye makeup

Hahahaha, nah. I'm usually a no-make-up, wild unkept brows, pimply girl. I'm actually starting to think i was a drag queen in a former life.

papa november (papa november), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey Kate! My name is Kate too and when I was in grade six the girls in my class made t-shirts that said "We hate kate". It must be something in the name.

papa november (papa november), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I had the idea, when that Tina Turner biopic was first out, of getting "I like Ike" t-shirts printed. Never got round to it tho.

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:45 (twenty-one years ago)

It's just cause it rhymes so nicely, I guess, Kate. Though couldn't it have been "We Rate Kate" or even "We Date Kate" (as worn my superhott boys).

Masonic Boom-Boom (kate), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:46 (twenty-one years ago)

when I was in grade six the girls in my class made t-shirts that said "We hate kate".

OMG thats dreadful! Were they serious?

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:48 (twenty-one years ago)

BY superbott boys. Freudian slip there. Ha-HEM.

Masonic Boom-Boom (kate), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Man, I've heard way too many annoying limericks that rhyme with kate :)

....

yeah they were serious. i've been a bit damaged ever since.

papa november (papa november), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, but INXS wrote an entire rap about us!

Masonic Boom-Boom (kate), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:50 (twenty-one years ago)

oh and then theres that ben folds five song......

papa november (papa november), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Yar boo sucks to them then.

x-post

Matt (Matt), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:51 (twenty-one years ago)

God, don't remind me...

Masonic Boom-Boom (kate), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think there has ever been a "mark" song. Which is nice.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:53 (twenty-one years ago)

It could be worse. You could be called Jennifer!

Masonic Boom-Boom (kate), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I pity any Jesse's out there for Rick Springfields Jesse's Girl. That song sucks balls.

papa november (papa november), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:57 (twenty-one years ago)

it so desperately needs to be "i wish that i was jesse's girl"

g--ff (gcannon), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:59 (twenty-one years ago)

'The Bell(e) Of St Mark'

Stevem On X (blueski), Friday, 14 January 2005 13:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Whatever it's called. I'm drunk and I hate that song anyway. When I was 18 I worked at Sizzler and I heard that song 15+ times a day.

papa november (papa november), Friday, 14 January 2005 13:01 (twenty-one years ago)

start threads about c-span, your q-rating will go SKY high

g--ff (gcannon), Friday, 14 January 2005 13:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Close, stevem, close.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 14 January 2005 13:01 (twenty-one years ago)

The Fall: "Mark'll Sink Us"

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 14 January 2005 13:02 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, you got me. I did mean in a romantic way, but I'll have that one.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 14 January 2005 13:04 (twenty-one years ago)

There is 'Juliet And Mark' by Kevin Coyne and 'Mark'll Sink Us' by the Fall. (xpost)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 14 January 2005 13:04 (twenty-one years ago)

or start threads about obscure british garden birds

Matt (Matt), Friday, 14 January 2005 13:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Somebody beat me to a Kevin Coyne song (*hangs head in shame*)

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 14 January 2005 13:05 (twenty-one years ago)

So.

I need a beer.

Does ILX dare me to drink a beer?

The Mad Puffin (The Mad Puffin), Friday, 14 January 2005 22:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I believe this thread is perhaps better suited for inviting such challenges.

Ken L (Ken L), Friday, 14 January 2005 22:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh man, I totally would rather AIM then talk on the phone. I have nothing to say to a phone. Who wants to talk into an object? Typing is one thing, talking is another. I also don't like those new phone systems where you say "ground shipment" instead of pressing "3". That irks me, I usually try to get to an operator at that point or see if there's a website or maybe a competitor I can use.

Ned is known outside of ILX? For his spoken word albums, I hope.

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 14 January 2005 22:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I have to deal with that voice activated UPS system all the time, Chris and I sympathize with you there--i hate hate hate it. Even pressing numbers is better than having to talk to an automaton.

Orbit (Orbit), Friday, 14 January 2005 22:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh my god, I hate those voice systems, especially when I can be heard grunting "No," "Number three," or "Partially destroyed" all down the phone in a grating monotone, in the middle of a quiet office. Plus I hate the sound of my voice.

jill schoelen is the queen of my dreams! (Homosexual II), Friday, 14 January 2005 23:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't mind web chatting with someone if they remember to spell and punctuate. Otherwise, give me the telephone.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Friday, 14 January 2005 23:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I've been accused of being a stuck-up snob in the Literati rooms for daring to spell and punctuate.

I Am Curious (George) (Rock Hardy), Friday, 14 January 2005 23:33 (twenty-one years ago)

The worst is Claire with Sprint. I hate her with the fire of a thousand suns.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 14 January 2005 23:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned is known outside of ILX? For his spoken word albums, I hope.

Maybe this little thread called TS: AMG vs. ILM that I created under an old name will help you understand, Chris. Probably not though.

Ken L (Ken L), Friday, 14 January 2005 23:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I got known for constantly denying I was a goth, and backing this up by saying "look, see?" and posting pictures of myself looking totally goth. I didn't do it on purpose!

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 14 January 2005 23:59 (twenty-one years ago)

three years later and i'm still unknown

the surface noise (slight return) (electricsound), Saturday, 15 January 2005 00:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Saturday, 15 January 2005 00:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Nope.

Michael White (Hereward), Saturday, 15 January 2005 00:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Who are you, Jim? ;P

Trayce (trayce), Saturday, 15 January 2005 00:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, actually I did hear some kind of electric sound, come to think of it.

Michael White (Hereward), Saturday, 15 January 2005 00:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Nah it was just surface noise ;)

Trayce (trayce), Saturday, 15 January 2005 00:17 (twenty-one years ago)

pwned :(

the surface noise (slight return) (electricsound), Saturday, 15 January 2005 00:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah, a slight return!

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Saturday, 15 January 2005 00:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Aw we lub you Jim!

Trayce (trayce), Saturday, 15 January 2005 00:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Jim is a fine feller, a statement I can say having had a beer with him. And he makes him good music.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 15 January 2005 00:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't mind web chatting with someone if they remember to spell and punctuate. Otherwise, give me the telephone.
Man, after 3 seconds with me on msngr you'd be setting your computer on fire!

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Saturday, 15 January 2005 01:09 (twenty-one years ago)

4) Tell everyone how much you fancy your own cock

Adamdrome Crankypants (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 15 January 2005 01:56 (twenty-one years ago)

That's enough to get a thread going but not enough to get everyone to remember who you are. Unless you actually show the thing. And it's a great cock.

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 15 January 2005 04:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah I was going to mention getting ones shlong out online. Which IIRC, only Momus and, technically speaking Martin, have done. Is that right?

Trayce (trayce), Saturday, 15 January 2005 04:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Though I suppose that fits in with definition 3 in Marks original post...

Trayce (trayce), Saturday, 15 January 2005 04:29 (twenty-one years ago)

only Momus and, technically speaking Martin, have done

I don't recall ever getting my shlong out onl-- Oh. The other Martin. Right.

Dammit, that wouldn't be the first time Mr. Skidmore has caused me confusion, though I can't say anything because he was on ILX first.

martin m. (mushrush), Saturday, 15 January 2005 06:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Is it hard, really?

martin m just get your cock out and be done with it. no more confusion

ken c (ken c), Saturday, 15 January 2005 11:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I do think Matt DC is OTM re "I think it's human nature to feel as though you're not popular or well known."

Ahem, Dee honey, that was me.

Matt (Matt), Saturday, 15 January 2005 13:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Now I really don't feel known on ILX.

Matt (Matt), Saturday, 15 January 2005 13:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Mustachioed Man Versus Melon
I should have written Mustachioed Mallet-bearing Man Versus Melon.

Ken L (Ken L), Saturday, 15 January 2005 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not sure if I'm being annoying enough yet to be known.
I might have to crank it up to 11.

teeny (teeny), Saturday, 15 January 2005 14:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess I went with Mark Grout's #3, talking about shitting myself, being pissed on by my brother, having menstrual blood on my face and stuff like that. I also talked a lot of shit about ilxors behind their backs in AIM chats and made some friends that way. When I say I'm the lowest of the low you should just take my word for it.

halleljuha, Sunday, 16 January 2005 08:08 (twenty-one years ago)

MATT! Honey, I feel like shit now. Um, I'm terrible with names and I'm insanely regretful I messed things up ESPECIALLY there. I shall flog myself senseless to make up for this.

(I'll never forget that you gave me a little shining light in the midst of a vast field of darkness, though. You, Coastaltown Matt, not any other Matt. Well, maybe one other Matt too, but you definitely.)

Samantha Baker (Dee the Lurker), Sunday, 16 January 2005 08:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Dee plenty of people here give a damn about you! Aw, buck up woogums (etc etc). But I mean seriously, what kind of thing is that to say? You've made yourself known with your respectfulness and forthrightness and extremely clear writing. You've got thoughts that last longer than a sentence or two, and I think you're probably the most notoriously open-minded person around here. Anyway, I'm not on AIM because I've never done it and I'm got a phobia about it.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Sunday, 16 January 2005 08:23 (twenty-one years ago)

You are taking no shit from the shitters Dee and you are the BM dudes (for must we be known as it) favourites.

Sami Jheryllkanyga, Sunday, 16 January 2005 08:47 (twenty-one years ago)

dee. yeah i'd hit it.

John (jdahlem), Sunday, 16 January 2005 08:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Sunday, 16 January 2005 08:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Tracer I could not be fucking with for I belive he has a sociology degree.

Sami Jheryllkanyga, Sunday, 16 January 2005 09:01 (twenty-one years ago)
