ok i thought id stumbled on a hot new tv show that was slept on but it turns out its repeats anyway and its already been on bbc3 and bbc2.

but whatever, this show is too funny! i love it, and kris marshall banihes the shite memories of love actually and my family and lands a decent role.

if you havent seen it the premise (which is bound to soudn a bit shit) is that its basically a spaced style sitcom but because of a totally spurious link (the main charcter is a film maker) every episode is based on a ondensed version of a famous film. this week was top gun, except he was at driving school. its pretty silyl, but really funny, and doesnt suffer from the sort of "loook im so cool look aty my fuckin cachet, all the right people love this show" that a lot fo comedy has (well, im thinking of spaced here mainly).

so i am waiting to get some torrents or something of it, cos i really want to see it all but i think ive msised quite a few.

anyone else into this? it was just on tonight btw. bbc2 9.30

1st week (Rear Window) - good; a pleasant funny surprise.
2nd week (The Shining) - bad
3rd week - didn't bother watching

Nothing against the actor though.

i've only seen the rear window one and the top gun one. i found the rear window one quite amusing, even though i've never seen the film, and quite enjoyed the top gun one too. I guess they'd work better if you've seen the film before.

But it's very good, if you consider that it's an actor from 'my family' starring in it afterall...

the top gun last night was the first one i saw, and it was superb. i'm pretty miffed that i missed the rear window one

yeh the Top Gun one is the first one i've seen, missed the start but was very funny up until the point where he actually successfully pulled the driving test lady, then the guy just became a bit too annoying.

I think it's grate, personally. The Top Gun episode had several laugh-out-loud moments for me.

(Oh, and I like Jones. I like his voice, and the fact that he's just called Jones.)

i like the first one because whilst it referenced Rear Window it wasn't a slavish copy, they seemed to have lifes outside of the film but filmy things would keep happening. missed The Shining but saw last night's and hated it because it was just Top Gun transposed to a driving school (ie wasn't so much knowing references as a complete copy).

koogs (koogs), Monday, 17 January 2005 12:36 (twenty-one years ago)

i liked the shining one! and top gun last night was OK. i've decided i like this program.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Monday, 17 January 2005 12:47 (twenty-one years ago)

i liked the shining and top gun ones precisely for the same reason you didnt like them koogs, becasue they were slavish ciopies. every element was an obviosuly ridiculous attempt to copy the films, so it became a sort of slapstick affair, as contrived as laurel and hardy or something. thatss the level i enjoyed it on. maybe it besuase theyre the only ones ive seen, and ive seen the originals, whereas ihavent seen the rear window version or the original film.

I thought the Top Gun one was easily the funniest of the three so far. It seems fairly limited by it's concept in a lot of ways, and I think it gets dragged down a little... there's nothing outside of it, and it can seem a bit flat. Unlike Spaced, which worked well as it's own thing.

well if it just still to 6 episodes and disappears, then it will be perfect. i agree, if they try and drag it out anymore, it will fail. which is inevitably what will happen.

I can't believe there are haters of The Shining episode! It was the greatest episode ever!

I've remembered that the Shining episode also had me laughing out loud - especially the bit where one of the women (Beth?) was knocked out.
