so i came into work today, expecting a meeting about a project im working on, and my boss sends me this email thats like "whoops! lets meet wednesday; i forgot today was a holiday..." well, SHIT. i forgot, too. so now, i am the only person on either of two floors of my office. so i guess im going to have a quiet day of reflection on MLK at the dead office. lets have a banner ILX day. if this were curb your enthusiasm, by the way, i would almost certainly incur semi-karmatic wrath for staying here, instead of respectfully observing MLK day at home.

It is so nice having a day devoted to making kites for me

lukey (Lukey G), Monday, 17 January 2005 14:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I did this once, my new place had an extra holiday after a bank holiday but everyone forgot to tell me so I turn up on tuesday and the 1st time I realise anything is wrong is when the automatic doors dont open I almost walked straight into them.

Luckily I only had a 15 minute walk home.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Monday, 17 January 2005 14:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I wish I got MLK Day off. I'm going into work on four hours of sleep, woo-hoo.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 17 January 2005 14:20 (twenty-one years ago)

hilarious about the automatic doors.

yeah, i mean, im hourly here, and everyone else is salaried. so im just gonna hang out and do some work and rock my music extra loud.

peter smith (plsmith), Monday, 17 January 2005 14:24 (twenty-one years ago)

why not go home and claim that you have been working all day?

ken c (ken c), Monday, 17 January 2005 14:25 (twenty-one years ago)

ehhh - i mean, i have some stuff to do, and im too principled/too much of a pussy to lie.

peter smith (plsmith), Monday, 17 January 2005 14:28 (twenty-one years ago)

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Monday, 17 January 2005 14:31 (twenty-one years ago)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 17 January 2005 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm at work as well. We just finished watching Napoleon Dynamite on the video wall and I don't know what's next but I brought TRON, Sneakers, and Real Genius

TOMBOT, Monday, 17 January 2005 15:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Dude if you hang around after the credits for ND you get to see Kip's wedding to lafawnduh. holy shit this is absurd.

TOMBOT, Monday, 17 January 2005 15:28 (twenty-one years ago)

oh man - i wish i worked with you.

peter smith (plsmith), Monday, 17 January 2005 15:28 (twenty-one years ago)

god. i have to work today too. is it too much to ask for a holiday?! also, i feel like bernie mac with double pneumonia.

Emilymv (Emilymv), Monday, 17 January 2005 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

We get today as an optional holiday - either MLK Day or Columbus Day. One of my co-workers dicked around so long about which day to take (we can't all take it) that he ended up getting it off, and I ended up having to work. Thankfully it's quiet, but I'd rather be home.

luna (luna.c), Monday, 17 January 2005 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Days like today make me wish that I worked for the government, the post office, or a bank.

Here where I'm at, today is simultaneously Robert E. Lee AND Martin Luther King Day. Figure THAT one out.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Monday, 17 January 2005 18:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeepers, I sympathize for everyone stuck at work, horrid. I'm pretty glad for the extra day, it was a busy weekend and I'm still catching up on lost sleep!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 17 January 2005 18:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm off today as well, but my paycheck is probably at the office, and I'm tempted to go in anyways. But it's raining, so probably not.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 17 January 2005 18:25 (twenty-one years ago)

i was just going to ask about what the south does about MLK day! thanks PP!

John (jdahlem), Monday, 17 January 2005 18:25 (twenty-one years ago)

That's terrific: "We all get the day off to sit home and feel however we individually feel about black people and the south's transition from a slave-holding plantocracy to a theoretically racially-integrated slightly-laggard portion of the new American service economy!"

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 17 January 2005 18:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I came to work because train-flooding on Friday kept me from making it in then. If not for that I would have just not showed up, and then if my boss called I would have been all like "What an offensive thing to ask, show some respect, man."

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 17 January 2005 18:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm at work because we do news, but most of the company is home. I'm leaving early though.

Tombot I get the sense that you guys would be watching movies even on a regular workday: yes or no or maybe?

Haibun (Begs2Differ), Monday, 17 January 2005 18:34 (twenty-one years ago)

They're closing the office at 3pm...

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 17 January 2005 22:09 (twenty-one years ago)

WTF, I had no idea it was MLK day. I was just wondering why there is a MASSIVE line for the movie theater outside my office.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 17 January 2005 22:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I only worked for four hours today. But I had to brave the lines at the bookstore because I needed one more book for this semester and some more Scantrons because I had less than I thought I did and, well, that itself seemed like it took up four hours (even though it only took an hour overall). I'm operating on maybe three hours' sleep and haven't had a chance to take a nap thus far so I want to sleeeeeeeeeeep.

Sleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep.

I mean, like, I deeply admire MLK 24/7/365, yeah, and I think it's sad that he was cut down in the prime of his life, but right now I could do with some sleeeeeeeeeeep.

But dinner's not going to fix itself. Ack.
