The first french-language movie I ever saw that didn't suck (I was in French Immersion, so I was force-fed the suck for many years before this came out on video). Do non-Cdns know about it? It's way better than DeGrassi.

peter smith (plsmith), Monday, 17 January 2005 15:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, on the NHL Strike thread. It was the inspiration.

Huk-L, Monday, 17 January 2005 15:31 (twenty-one years ago)

awesome.

peter smith (plsmith), Monday, 17 January 2005 15:31 (twenty-one years ago)

alex in montreal, Monday, 17 January 2005 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

koogs (koogs), Monday, 17 January 2005 16:53 (twenty-one years ago)

huckleberry mann, i kiss you.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 17 January 2005 16:53 (twenty-one years ago)

i think i saw both this and "innerspace" about 1200 times apiece.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 17 January 2005 16:54 (twenty-one years ago)

(does that really say "produced by ROCK DEMERS"?)

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 17 January 2005 16:55 (twenty-one years ago)

to be honest all i really remember about this is that amazing fort and the brothers who wore helmets made out of halved basketballs.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 17 January 2005 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

and the ending, oh god the ending.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 17 January 2005 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I remember the love story.

Huk-L, Monday, 17 January 2005 16:57 (twenty-one years ago)

my working theory (hatched 2 mins ago) is that the kids in this movie were the original noize dudes.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 17 January 2005 17:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Was The Peanut Butter Solution a straight up sequel, or just also produced by Rock Demers? That movie was awful, even to my pre-ado sensibilities.

xpost. OTM.

Huk-L, Monday, 17 January 2005 17:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Do you guys remember the other Rock Demers-produced films like Bach et Bottine (my favourite), Les Aventuriers du Timbre Perdu (Tommy Tricker), La Grenouille et la Baleine or Le Jeune Magicien.

alex in montreal, Monday, 17 January 2005 17:02 (twenty-one years ago)

so wait was rock demers some kind of canadian kids movie demigod or something?

i don't think i ever saw the peanut butter solution. the name rings a bell tho.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 17 January 2005 17:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Peanut Butter Solution was just the second in his Contes Pour Tous/Tales For All series (with The Dog... being the very first one).

alex in montreal, Monday, 17 January 2005 17:10 (twenty-one years ago)

The series in question:

- The Dog Who Stopped the War/La guerre des tuques. (no. 1)
- The Peanut Butter Solution/Opération beurre de pinottes. (no. 2)
- Bach and Broccoli/Bach et Bottine. (no. 3)
- The Young Magician/Le jeune magicien (no. 4)
- The Great Land of Small/C'est parce qu'on est petit qu'on peut pas être grand! (no. 5)
- Tadpole and the Whale/La grenouille et la baleine (no. 6)
- Tommy Tricker and the Stamp Traveller/Les aventuriers du timbre perdu. (no.7)
- Summer of the Colt/Fierro . . . L'été des secrets.(no. 8)
- Bye Bye Red Riding Hood/Bye bye chaperon rouge. (no. 9)
- The Case of the Witch That Wasn't/Pas de répit pour Mélanie. (no.10)
- Vincent and Me/Vincent et moi. (no. 11)

alex in montreal, Monday, 17 January 2005 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

wow, it's like his decalogue for kids.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 17 January 2005 17:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow. I had no idea.

Huk-L, Monday, 17 January 2005 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

omg i can't believe this thread exists! i was going to bring up rock demers like i was all clued-in and shit but you guys are already talking about him!

his "later work" is really atrocious, though. he actually dared to produce a movie called "the hidden fortress"! ever heard of kurosawa yo!?

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 05:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Years of French Immersion are now flashing before my eyes. My entire class was pretty shaken up the first time we saw "La Guerre des tuques" and Cleo died.

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 08:05 (twenty-one years ago)

So is Cleo a Christ metaphor?

Huk-L, Tuesday, 18 January 2005 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I never even clued in that it was called "The dog who stopped the war"! (until now.) I always knew it as "La guerre des tuques" even though I didn't speak french as a kid - but it was always on cbc french and english (dubbed, of course). This is a weird revelation. Esp since I didn't even know the french name for "The Peanut Butter Solution" yet saw that one (too) many times.

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

FUCK, Guerre Des Tuques was playing here the past two Sundays, with the director and the star present. Damn thread starting way too late...

Hey s1ocki, do you know if La Boîte Noire has these?

alex in montreal, Tuesday, 18 January 2005 15:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh wait, it's playing the next two Sundays too.

alex in montreal, Tuesday, 18 January 2005 15:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Which star?

Huk-L, Tuesday, 18 January 2005 15:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Maripierre A. D’Amour (Sophie)

the greatest name ever!

Huk-L, Tuesday, 18 January 2005 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

i am seriously considering renting this over the weekend.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I remember reading the book but I'm not sure if I ever saw the movie. I think I might have saw part of the movie on TV and decided to read the book because of it
