Donating Blood

I'm keen to start donating blood. Can anyone advise how long after a tattoo one can do so, and how long after giving up cannabis?

Much appreciated.

not exactly straightforward, but here is a flash quiz:

well done the national blood service...

two months pass...
i just gave blood. during the survey thing, the lady asked if i had in the past year had sexual contact with a male who had had sex with another male. the answer was yes, but i while i was thinking about it she kind of laughed at me, and i (fairly confident that neither of the two bi dudes i've slept with in the past year have the HIV) said no. should i still call and tell them the blood i gave is unsafe? they're going to test it anyway, i just feel like i lied to them.

im a fag, our blood is ritutally unclean.

anthony, Saturday, 16 April 2005 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

the red cross people should know not to laugh at your responses, yes? it was kind of a knee-jerk reaction on her part, but still!

three months pass...
I donated for the first time this afternoon ouside London Bridge Station. I feel a bit woozy now! Was the strange McDonalds a figment of my imagination?

marianna, Monday, 18 July 2005 12:44 (twenty years ago)

Well done ladies & gents. James is giving blood as we speak. I will follow suit as soon as I can in the next few weeks. Giving blood is the only time you can (& most definitely should) have a big bar of chocolate. If you feel woozy Marianna, eat something sugary & don't take your lil plaster off.

I remember once saying "yes" to the drugs question & I had to speak to 3 different people about it & they put a white paper clip on my file. Oh the shame.

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Monday, 18 July 2005 12:54 (twenty years ago)

the last two times i've tried to give blood - once from my right arm, once from my left - the flow seizes up after about five minutes and nothing they can do will keep it going. i then develop a fucking pearler of a bruise (i can post a picture later if anyone really wants to see).

it puts me right off, i can tell you: i mean, i fucking hate needles in the first instance, but i feel it's my duty to go and donate.

i guess it's time for another attempt. piss.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 18 July 2005 13:04 (twenty years ago)

They pull stuff out of you for five minutes?! Argh. I really should do this, though. Can I make an appointment online, perhaps? (The sites linked above won't open for me ATM)

Lucretia My Reflection (Lucretia My Reflection), Monday, 18 July 2005 13:06 (twenty years ago)

Marianna - the London Bridge McDonalds is real.

Raston Worrier Robot (alix), Monday, 18 July 2005 13:11 (twenty years ago)

Can I make an appointment online, perhaps?

there shouldn't be any need to make an appointment: just hoy along to your nearest donating centre. obviously, if you go at a busy time (lunchtime, 5pm, saturday mid-morning) you'll be waiting around a bit, but go early in the morning or an hour before they close and you should be seen pretty quickly.

the staff in glasgow are wonderful: a lovely bunch. i just feel bad that i keep letting them down. honestly: it's like not being able to get an erection.

er, i imagine.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 18 July 2005 13:18 (twenty years ago)

I am not a very good "bleeder" so I have to continually "pump" my hand to try to donate. Even if you don't donate a full pint they stop you after a certain amount of time.
Starry, you don't need an appointment, but I am sure you can make them.

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Monday, 18 July 2005 13:22 (twenty years ago)

The ones I've been to certainly prefer you to have an appointment (and this should avoid any long wait, which also happens sometimes - the last time I tried to give blood, the wait was 45 minutes and we had other things to do :(

I have given about 9 times now, I think. And I hate needles with a passion.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 18 July 2005 13:32 (twenty years ago)

The last time I tried to donate blood I took too long (something like 45 minutes just to get a pint!) and the nurse got angry and told me I shouldn't donate blood again. My blood isn't even good enough for the Red Cross.

Leon C. (Ex Leon), Monday, 18 July 2005 13:33 (twenty years ago)

(x-post) after i posted, i thought: hang on, i imagine booking is slightly more apposite in london, yeh.

mark, you've never had a drying-up problem, then?

nicole: join the club!

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 18 July 2005 13:34 (twenty years ago)

i tried donating for the first time this year & fainted. I'm nervous to try again, but perhaps I should.

kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 18 July 2005 13:38 (twenty years ago)

I have to switch to the right arm for the next few times. I've given out of my left exclusively the last few years and I think I'm starting to build up a little scar tissue that's uncomfortable to work around.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Monday, 18 July 2005 13:42 (twenty years ago)

Nicole that's horrible! To be honest, I didn't think they let you carry on after a certain amount of time.
x-post
I have holes in both arms & always totally look like a junkie after I've given blood.

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Monday, 18 July 2005 13:45 (twenty years ago)

I recently found out I'm O negative, a universal donor! I wish I could donate--of course they don't let you when you're pregnant, but before that I was always too light. I tried to game the system once with steel-toed boots etc and found out they have that rule for a reason. :( I passed out and was sick for days. Maybe I will keep a little of this baby weight and be able to donate later, beyond it being a good thing to do I'm always fascinated by the needle business.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 18 July 2005 13:46 (twenty years ago)

o yeh, i forgot: i'm o negative too. i have a special gold card and everything. hence the staggering levels of guilt i feel about not donating/trying to donate more often.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 18 July 2005 13:49 (twenty years ago)

STarry, I'll go with you if you find a local one to work.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 18 July 2005 13:51 (twenty years ago)

In peckham, they don't need appointments, but the queue is quite long, so they make sense. Not that i bother, as I quite like sitting in the church hall waiting. What happened when I did it was first was:
1 - fill out questionnaire about personal details, yr health, sex life, furrin travel ect ect
2 - have chat with the doctor about any parts of the Q that might pose a problem and so they can make sure you understand what you're doing
3 - have a haemoglobin test (pin prick, fingertip) to make sure you're not anaemic (if it floats you are an anaemic witch and you have to go home. It doesn't mean you can't donate in the future though, just that time)
4 - wait about
5- be called over by nursey, who props you up on a bed, primes yr arm, then sticks a needle in your arm. Whilst you panic gently she makes smalltalk which you will be oddly grateful for, whilst recognising that neither of you have any interest in what you're talking about.
6 - needle comes out after 5 minutes or so, plaster put on arm, you get to sit on the bed for as long as you need it
7 - drink squash and eat crisps.

you have to re do the quest and the haemoglobin test each time you donate, which is quite fun because usually the only things thats changed is if you've been abroad, so you get to boast about yr travels, to a largely unconcerned nurse.

Raston Warrior Robot (alix), Monday, 18 July 2005 13:52 (twenty years ago)

ok, let's see if this works. that bruise in full:

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 18 July 2005 14:00 (twenty years ago)

ow shit, it worked. sorry everyone :)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 18 July 2005 14:00 (twenty years ago)

I went last week for the first time (no excuse). Took about 6 minutes to get the pint out of me and I felt fine the whole time. Unless I finally go to get that giant eagle tat across my back soon I'll be going again in October. They gave me a donut and some apple juice when I was done so it was worth it.

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 18 July 2005 14:02 (twenty years ago)

Mine's the same as Lixi's although I need a "6a" where I feel extremely feint & go green while the nurse props my feet up!

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Monday, 18 July 2005 14:04 (twenty years ago)

Pete, there's a small one at Euston, but there's also the West End Donor Centre on Margaret St (just behind Ox Circus off Gt Portland Street) - they appear to have donating sessions every day. I was thinking about going next Monday, if you want to come along. Drop me an email!

Donate blood. That is all.

i donated blood a little while ago for the first time. Apparently I have exceptionally small veins :/ I will go back again when I'm allowed to at the end of February.

Isambard Kingdom Buñuel (jim in glasgow), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 19:02 (sixteen years ago)

You can donate blood w a tattoo? Or does it only have to be more than 6 mos old or something?

WHY DON'T YOU JUST LICK THE BUS DIRECTLY (Laurel), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 19:06 (sixteen years ago)

ugh, I haven't given in over a year, I need to get back to a regular schedule

WmC, Wednesday, 20 January 2010 19:17 (sixteen years ago)

I want to donate blood.

That picture made me queasy and dizzy.

How do I reconcile these two things?

she is writing about love (Jenny), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 19:19 (sixteen years ago)

It doesn't hurt, that red stuff in the photo is antiseptic swab not blood, and it really makes you feel like a hero when you're done.

WmC, Wednesday, 20 January 2010 19:21 (sixteen years ago)

The place I give blood to lets you donate if you have tattoos over one year old. That did not stop them from calling me literally every week in the year after I got my most recent tat, telling them, "Please don't call me again until Jan. 2010, when I will be eligible to give blood. I can't help you right now! I've told you this several times." And they kept calling anyway. It made me so mad I almost wanted to never help them out again, but I ended up donating blood last Saturday. Those sons of bitches!

sedentary lacrimation (Abbott), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 19:21 (sixteen years ago)

Also, free juice and cookies, and sometimes a free t-shirt.

WmC, Wednesday, 20 January 2010 19:22 (sixteen years ago)

To clarify:

Belligerent phone workers: dud.
Giving blood: awesome, super classic, costs nothing, saves lives, you get to see your own blooood which is cool if you are a weirdo like me.

sedentary lacrimation (Abbott), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 19:23 (sixteen years ago)

If you are planning on donating blood, drink hell of delicious water beforehand. Makes that shit a lot easier.

sedentary lacrimation (Abbott), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 19:24 (sixteen years ago)

Yes, the phone workers are obnoxious. I only gave this weekend because they were badgering Mrs. Kongvsgodzilla and I had to get on the phone and ask if they'd take me in her place, since the only time she gave blood she puked and doesn't want to go back.

I used to give several times a year, back when I was a student. It's been hard to squeeze it in recently, but I really want to get back in the habit because they need blood.

two years pass...

I have inexplicably woken up in the middle of the night, thinking: I don't donate blood, maybe I should.

I've never done it, I've never even considered it, I haven't got the faintest idea where this suddenly came from (haven't read about someone being rescued by a blood donation, haven't seen or heard it being mentioned) - anyway, I'm gonna see where and when the next local event at the Red Cross is now. I'll see if I can fill up a jerrycan by then.

So yeah. I guess this is how callings work for religious people.

StanM, Thursday, 5 July 2012 22:41 (thirteen years ago)

Good for you! It's a great feeling.

I need to start going back. The main recruiter at UBS in Tupelo kind of drove me away from donating after I gave double red cells instead of whole blood a couple of times. She thought she had a milk cow she could just hook up to the pump whenever, and basically harassed me to try to keep to a schedule I didn't want. But it's a tougher donation than whole blood.

Neil Jung (WmC), Thursday, 5 July 2012 23:45 (thirteen years ago)

I've just given up on it, every time I've tried in the past two years they've spent 10+ minutes poking at me only to conclude I apparently no longer have veins. I was really into donating blood, too!

The Food and Drug Administration announced on Tuesday that it would scrap a prohibition on blood donation by gay and bisexual men, but would keep a block on donations by men who have had sex with other men in the last 12 months.

Define "have had sex."

I donate every two months (some reasons), but every time I run through the list of intrusive questions about my private life, health and travels I feel like the most boring person around.
