I've only dated one person outside of the school environment, and I met her through an acquaintance of mine who went to law school with her; he brought her around to various social gatherings I attended.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 17 January 2005 23:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Private parties.

Autumn Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Monday, 17 January 2005 23:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Some of mine were penfriends. Some, I met online (yeah yeah shut up). Current guy I met at a nightclub/bar I used to hang out at (but at the time I was with someone else).

A large percentage of my boys have been long distance things. This might explain a lot.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 17 January 2005 23:38 (twenty-one years ago)

ai lien (kold_krush), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 04:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Mostly at bars/clubs (ie i successfully "pulled" them and then saw them at least once after that). But most entertaining stories would be the fellow I picked up at a peace march and the one who I collected after a show (groupie style).

Was this thread supposed to provide you with tips on how to meet people or just for the sake of random (or not so random) surveying?

mouse (mouse), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 04:40 (twenty-one years ago)

It's kind of misleading, because although I've met partners mostly at gigs or clubs, usually they've been friends of friends, so it's not as random as it sounds. (This is actual partners, not groupies or that despicable practise of pulling the support bands.)

I had to watch in horror a few weeks ago as The Spy recounted a story that we met "through the interweb" which is a dirty damnable lie, as I met his *friends* through the interweb, but met him dancing at a nightclub. Which sounds far less tawdry indeed.

Masonic Boom-Boom (kate), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 11:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 18 January 2005 11:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Various short lived romances during my teens/early twenties = met at parties, mostly.

I met The Bloke at Uni. Been together ever since (I am now old, i.e. 37). Aww.

C J (C J), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 11:31 (twenty-one years ago)

not to pry (well ok, TO pry), how does someone meet their partner through a blog? feel free to ignore my query if its P&C.

ppp, Tuesday, 18 January 2005 11:36 (twenty-one years ago)

mostly clubs and pubs, sometimes in work. The longest relationship I had (6 months) was a girl I met in the office. Club and pub meetings tend to be rather messy and unresolved for me, second dates are always awkward.

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 11:37 (twenty-one years ago)

i met my husband at Ten Days Off festival. :-)

stevie nixed (stevie nixed), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 11:37 (twenty-one years ago)

(x post x2)

well, you know, people do email me from time to time about what i write in my blog. but the whole "relationship" was a ghastly mistake. not a recommended course of action.

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 18 January 2005 11:46 (twenty-one years ago)

At school (days), at university (weeks / months), via the internet (days / hours), in the pub (3 years).

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

For the longer relationships I've had:

Through friends, drinking outside. We were actually cuffed together by an mutual friend, and so it began.

Through this sort of a Sunday club (not a "club" as in "nightclub", but a club where people get together and do all sorts of fun things) we had. This was my longest relationship, it took weeks of timid flirting until we were willing to admit we like each other.

Through a friend, she was her old childhood pal who moved to Helsinki.

Through friends.

As for one-night stands, those were (I think) exclusively through private parties. For dating that didn't lead into anything, school has been an important factor, for example I've met two girls through feminist studies classes (that's *not* why I go there though).

I don't think I've ever dated anyone whom I'd first met in a pub or a club.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 14:14 (twenty-one years ago)

The Sunday Club sounds like a great idea, not for meeting chiXxors, but to regularly do "cool stuff" with friends. I should start one.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 14:17 (twenty-one years ago)

"Cool stuff" = foiling international smuggling rings with just your wits, your four friends and a dog.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 14:18 (twenty-one years ago)

HOW'D YOU KNOW?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 14:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Its what every photo you ever post reminds me of? ;)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 14:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Either that or foiling the dastardly schemes of on-the-run criminals masquerading as scary ghosts in big houses.

(I'm sorry for this thread derail, I really am)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 14:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Matt, I'd ask you to be in my Sunday Club but I fear geography prevents us.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 14:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Obviously Tuomas too, but geography REALLY prevents that.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 14:36 (twenty-one years ago)

We used to have a Sunday Club, but was mainly for the purposes of drinking vodka and held in a bar, so I think it was more like a nightclub but just taking place on Sunday afternoons. Hrmmm. Charlie No Four and I keep talking about reviving it, but so far, all talk, no action.

Masonic Boom-Boom (kate), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

jim and i were talking about having a sunday club that involved watching musicals...but it hasn't happened yet.
