Why does anything put in my refrigerator acquire a foul fucking taste?

It's subtle, and sometimes hard to detect at all. For example, it wasn't very noticeable in the cheese I ate last night, but it was pronounced in the sandwich half I saved for later, as well as the milk I am drinking now. I think there is some sort of witchcraft at play.

You got something that's gone off in there maybe?

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 17 January 2005 23:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Pull the top back on a box of baking soda and leave it in there full time.

I've looked around thoroughly and haven't noticed anything terrible. the rank smell seems to be emanating from the Brita pitcher, the filter of which I don't think we've changed in a LONG time. I have ceased drinking from said pitcher.

Will take your advice on the baking soda front.

Has your fridge been unplugged for a while (say for defrosting) with the door closed? That can screw up a fridge big time. Oh - well, maybe it is the Brita.

electric refrigeration is unnatural and you are getting exactly what you deserve.

John (jdahlem), Monday, 17 January 2005 23:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe change the Brita filter? And clean the fridge?

How long had the cheese and milk been in there? Even when properly refrigerated, they don't last forever.

under a week.

is everything in there properly stored/covered? sometimes strong food smells and tastes can permeate other things in the fridge.

cathy berberian (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 17 January 2005 23:58 (twenty-one years ago)

And clean the fridge?

otm. a few months ago i soaked the fruit & vegetable crispers in boiling water and kept pouring boiling water over them until they were spotless. it made a tremendous difference. also, get some steel wool pads and scrub down the shelves, the walls, and anything else. your food will thank you.

Even eggs can absorb bad smells/tastes thru their shells.

I heard they can even pick up your speech habits that way!

DAMNIT. I have a dozen eggs in there i was counting on still tasting fine... we'll have to see what I can do about this. I just poked around in there and found some rotting mushrooms in a back corner and a tin of bacon grease; both have been dealt with. Maybe that will help, maybe not. I am heading out to the store now to get a new filter and some baking soda. Will keep ya'll updated.

I had the same problem and narrowed it down to the Brita filter, oddly enough. We stopped using it and buy tanks of filtered water now.
