FDA RECOMMENDS LIMITED USE OF COX-2 INHIBITORS. Following the recent release of clinical trial data showing that Cox-2 inhibitor pain-relief drugs may be linked to an increased risk of adverse cardiovascular effects, the FDA has issued an advisory urging limited use of the products and careful consideration by doctors of benefits versus risk. Issued as an interim measure pending further review of data, the advisory covers various non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), including prescription Cox-2 inhibitors such as Celebrex and Bextra, and over-the-counter and prescription naproxen-based NSAIDS such as Aleve and Naprosyn.

And meanwhile, codiene is horribly addictive but no one warns anyone about that and every chemist sells it by the bucketload. Damn you, pharmacy!

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 01:57 (twenty-one years ago)

...??? they do?? shit.

John (jdahlem), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 02:00 (twenty-one years ago)

they do in australia, i think codeine sales might be more restricted in the US as i understand my mum had it all taken off her when she crossed the border into the US from Canada last year.

gem (trisk), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 02:01 (twenty-one years ago)

i.e. she had taken it to canada with her on holiday from australia

gem (trisk), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 02:02 (twenty-one years ago)

dude i use this all the time too! i'm totally fucked

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 02:14 (twenty-one years ago)

So am I... I'd be a wreck if I had to go to the US if you cant buy it there argh.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 02:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh wait you meant aleve not codiene... gah.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 02:15 (twenty-one years ago)

i gotta get my aleve from over the border too.

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 02:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Aleve is my painkiller of choice.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 02:25 (twenty-one years ago)

i know. i have for years though aleve was the best painkiller of all. the other day after 4 people all in a group yelled at me for using it saying it's terrible for my heart I went home and sadly threw out my bottle. sniff sniff. then I had to use tylenol which is basically like a sugar pill to me. It only works if i pretend it's aleve. ugh. what to do.

owen reading, Tuesday, 18 January 2005 02:27 (twenty-one years ago)

i rarely use painkillers. i don't even know what aleve is. i guess i'm just lucky not to get headaches or whatever pain it is people feel they have to kill.

gem (trisk), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 02:29 (twenty-one years ago)

On that rare occasion, I use ibuprofen.

I Am Curious (George) (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 02:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Isnt that what Aleve is? Ibuprofen?

Paracetamol is even worse for you btw. You can overdose on it EXTREMELY easily.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 02:42 (twenty-one years ago)

well it's not very good for your liver certainly. i always try and lecture my friends about taking it when they have a hangover, their poor little livers. none of them listen though. that's a continuing theme hehe.

gem (trisk), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 02:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, my girlfriend takes almost a muscle relaxer a day and likes the booze as well. A girl after my own heart, but I worry about the liver.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 02:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Ibuprofen is meant to heighten the levels of lithium in your body, which probably isn't a good thing unless you're schizophrenic or something.

papa november (papa november), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 02:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I take panediene every day and i drink - how I am still *alive* i really dont know!

I do get liver function tests regularly and have had ultrasounds too tho.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 02:52 (twenty-one years ago)

well i never ever take it and my liver is a bit crap. so you can't win eh.

gem (trisk), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 02:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I dont know how mine isnt crap. Ive had glandular fever, I drink way too much, loads of paracetamol, fatty foods (up til recently anyhow, now im off all that). I do have a cyst on my spleen (!!) but they said that was benign and nothing to do with this stuff.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 02:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Aleve = naproxen, different from ibuprofen.

I Am Curious (George) (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 03:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmm, both called nonsteroidal antiinflammatories. Not sure how they're similar or different yet. Will keep looking. Hrm. (/rohrschach)

I Am Curious (George) (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 03:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah I think I made the assumption aleve was iburpofen because I knew they were both NSAIDs. Which I'm told I cant have as I'm not allowed asprin (I have some kind of salicylic acid intolerance).

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 03:12 (twenty-one years ago)

my understanding is that naproxen is like the big brother of ibuprofen.
