If there was a democratic vote for a new Monarch obviously Robbie Williams would win.

Who would get your vote for king/queen/president of the UK?

beanz (beanz), Thursday, 20 January 2005 13:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 20 January 2005 13:19 (twenty-one years ago)

You mentalists are always trying to revert to some Saxon golden age of folkmoots and electing kings, aren't you? Come on, the whole point of kingship is that it is A GODGIVEN DIVINE RIGHT and if you start this mentalism, soon you'll be voting for gods, too, won't you?

Prince Henry Charles Albert Adolf David of Wales

George Bush should rule the UK, and all the world. God told me so.

I always thought that the Americans should just appoint Ronald Reagan King and be done with it.

tell me about the Saxon age electing of kings then - how did it work? how democratic was it? why did it fail?

Stevem On X (blueski), Thursday, 20 January 2005 13:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, when the kingship came up for renewal through death, the Saxons nobles used to get together all the eligible parties who might be King (they had to have some kind of royal or noble blood at least) and elect which one they thought most suitable. So it was not totally democratic, in that there was still a limited pool of voters and an even more limited pool of candidates for kingship, but it did mean that if the oldest heir was useless, you could substitute a cousin or a younger son who was better suited for ruling.

OK not geri after all then, I vote for queen boom-boom.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 20 January 2005 13:38 (twenty-one years ago)

me.

lucifer, Thursday, 20 January 2005 13:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, and the practise was put a stop to by the untimely invasion of William the Conquerer, piqued by the idea that the Saxons elders had decided Harold should rule them, when he reckoned that he deserved the title.

Masonic Boom-Boom (kate), Thursday, 20 January 2005 13:41 (twenty-one years ago)

ooh the bugger

Stevem On X (blueski), Thursday, 20 January 2005 13:42 (twenty-one years ago)

But before then, the rise of christianity changed the Saxon system cos it introduced the idea of sacral kingship. Kinda.

I'd vote for Lauren Laverne cos she'd look good on banknotes. Or my mate Olly cos he's smart.

beanz (beanz), Thursday, 20 January 2005 13:43 (twenty-one years ago)

But Beanz, that was in the Frankish empire, not in the UK, what with the Merovingians (who had their Holy Blood and therefore their right to rule by right of their blood) being supplanted by the Pepins who had to be ordained by the Church, and therefore developing their right to rule from the Church.

Or, erm, something.

Masonic Boom-Boom (kate), Thursday, 20 January 2005 13:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Ethelbert, the first AngloSaxon Christian king, was the first to have codified laws and the laws were partly about succession iirc (which I probably don't). There were enough disputes about succession after him, sure, but the idea of a blessed royal family (not nec divine right of kings but approaching it) was new from that point. I don't know much French stuff before the Carolingians I'm afraid.

beanz (beanz), Thursday, 20 January 2005 13:59 (twenty-one years ago)

You need to read more conspiracy theory books, then! The Merovingian kings were supposedly descended from the union of Jesus and Mary Magdalene, and that blood gave them a right to rule which did not require coronation or ratification by the church.

Masonic Boom-Boom (kate), Thursday, 20 January 2005 14:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Look you lot, if we're going to do this, we're going to do this PROPERLY. Therefore any prospective monarch:

1. Must command the respect of his subjects
2. Must look good wearing a crown
3. Must look even better in armour
4. When sitting on throne, must fill the entire room with their presence
5. Must be able to orate well. There's Christmas to think of
6. Must command enough authority to put that snivelling little weasel, Tony Blair, in his place
7. Must be the greatest living person in England.

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you...

Man, I was so hoping that would be a link to Tony Robinson. :-(
