Why did you watch or listen the Inaugural Address, if you did?

I did not. Frankly, I am not masochistic, and can deal with skimming a couple of summaries from various sources to read the policy tea-leaves. Still, I'm curious -- assuming, as one fairly can on this forum, that those posting are generally to completely unfavorable of Bush and what he stands for, why did you watch or listen?

complete and total masochism. i felt like shit and wondered if listening would make me feel worse.

guess the results of this experiment.

It was only 17 minutes long, so it probably wouldnt have been TOO excruciating.

There's a great clip of someone from Vanity Fair magazine sticking it to a Fox news anchorwoman about what she thought about the inauguration. I would supply a link, but the blogger in question is begging that people don't for now as it would make his bandwidth quota go to ridiculous levels.

donut christ (donut), Friday, 21 January 2005 02:40 (twenty-one years ago)

is it a profanity laden screed?

Juan, the Magic Don (jingleberries), Friday, 21 January 2005 02:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I listened to some of the coverage on NPR, but I missed the actual address. Bruce Buchanan from the University of Texas, Austin, was interviewed briefly by Linda Wertheimer. It was funny because you could tell that he won her over when he made the observation that Bush got his mandate from 9/11 and that he was using that in his speech. Buchanan is frequently cited in the LA Times on Bush, and at first, she didn't sound too friendly because I think she made him out as a Bush supporter. (I guess he is, but critical, too.) Then they played a clip from his speech and the reality was quite disappointing. It reminded me of Keanu Reeves in the movie about Buddha.

Here's a text paraphrase of the showdown:

Quinn begins by showing a picture of the White House framed in snow, commenting that it is beautiful, and inviting Bachrach to comment about whether the snow is putting a crimp into anyones plans.
Bachrach says something like "I hope that it does put a crimp into the lavish parties, or something should put a crimp into the lavish affairs."

Bachrach goes on to say "It seems like the more we are losing a war, the more lavish the inauguration is. For example FDR had a modest affair, serving chicken salad. We were winning that war . . ."

Quinn breaks in saying "I thought the President had already addressed this issue. We are celebrating democracy." Bachrach says "I thought I was able to say whatever I wanted." Quinn says "Ok, what would you cut back?"

Bachrach says "Do you see any democracy or peace in Iraq to celebrate? If so, you are the only person who does."

Quinn asks again "What would you cut back."

Bachrach comments on the inadequately armoured vehicles that leave U.S. soldiers as sitting ducks in Iraq. She says $40 million dollars on 10 different parties it too much."

Somewhere in here Quinn says "But President Bush has demonstrated his respect for the troops. What about the Commanders' and Chiefs Ball?"

Bachrach says something about "Respect won't keep our soldiers safe. They need adequate equipment. We shouldn't be spending $40 million on parties, we should be making sure our troops have adequate equipment."

Quinn cuts Bachrach off, saying "I think we've given you more than enough time to express your view. Thank you."

Bachrach politely thanks Fox News for inviting her.

IMPORTANT: Even though I use quotation marks, these are not exact quotes. I'm summarizing based on 2 reviews of the tapes. This is just to give folks who cannot see it an outline of the content.

I was lounging on the couch, kind of half listening and half dozing, so I didn't actually see anything. I am pretty sure that no bombs went off, and that Laura didn't turn into a pterodactyl, but I also remember that Cheney repeated his vice-presidential oath like so:

"I do solemnly swear that I will subvert and ... the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic, that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same: that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion, and I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God."

I am less sure that this was a dream.

While I was surfing the radio, I heard a newsperson say something like "Bush spent much of the speech discussing his promise to bring freedom to the entire world."

I actually burst out laughing.

I was busy changing diapers.

Then you got the general gist of it, with the advantage of perhaps being able to clean yourself afterward.

My fiancee said that she saw Laura whisper something into young Barbara's ear, and Young Bar completely turned her head, stuck-up nose sticking even further up in the air. Who knows (and who cares) what the fuck that was all about.
