I want the out-of-date Swahili version myself. It would be no less extreme.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 21 January 2005 16:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, how is it that people assume that to be 'extreme' is to have a font/design from 1985?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 21 January 2005 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe THIS will seem more up-to-date (by five years or so, anyway):

I don't think you can go wrong with an Inspirational Jesus Sports Statue.

http://catholicshopper.com/products/media/DE_3981.jpg

Many customers have requested these Jesus Sport Statues depicting children other than Caucasian and playing other sports; we have expressed these requests to manufacturers and importers.

Maybe Jesus only plays with white kids because they can't jump.

Jesus loves to play keep away with chubby kids.

Christ would totally dunk on those kids. Keep away is for suckers.

An oddly relevant thread of the past.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 22 January 2005 03:03 (twenty-one years ago)

When I was a kid, my parents owned one of those Good News Bibles they did in the 70s, which I think was the first attempt by zany american xians to liven up the staid image.

It read like some sort of outtake from Jesus Christ Superstar and had all these photos of happy college hippies hanging out at the fun park and letting their hair flow, man.

It made me very confused.

Trayce (trayce), Saturday, 22 January 2005 03:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I liked the Good News Bible. I thought the illustration were tastefully modern, not like some of these flakey new editions. I don't remember photos at all. There were line drawings by a Swiss artists, or something like that.

I think the Living Bible was closer to the vibe of some of the Bibles posted here.

Yeah, I really liked that a lot as well -- the minimal line drawings were very evocative, and in their own way allowed for a more universal treatment of the book than the overbearingly Caucasian-with-tan popularized visions of same that are awash in this country, at least. I wouldn't mind an edition myself.

The artist in question is Annie Vallotton, and there's a brief BBC story here with some of the illustrations, a very small sampling. The image of Christ's head fallen onto his chest was an extremely vivid one from my youth and I still appreciate it greatly today.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 22 January 2005 04:10 (twenty-one years ago)

And there may be a few too many women leaping about with tambourines for modern tastes.

I guess I'm just an old hippie.

RS £aRue (rockist_scientist), Saturday, 22 January 2005 04:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe it wasnt the GNB I am thinking of then but some moderned up offshoot - it had a green cover and it had photos in it. Does that ring bells with anyone? I dont know if it had another name.

A bit more on Vallotton here from a guest lecturer role/residency at Campbellsville University in Kentucky a year and a half back.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 22 January 2005 04:16 (twenty-one years ago)

The Living Bible often had a green cover.

Ah maybe that was it Rockist. I recall it was a bible reworded in very "modern" terminology - well, modern for the 70s in any case.

xpost nah... wasnt those kind of pics... I'll do some hunting.

Not to backtrack, but may I just point out the rather radical concept (or lack thereof) of perspective used by the designer of Extreme Faith?

I don't think you can go wrong with an Inspirational Jesus Sports Statue.

There used to be a hockey one! I guess they cancelled it because the Lord was clearly high-sticking.

Trayce, maybe it was The Way (which was I think the teenage version of the Living Bible--it's call coming back to me).

(And I know it's Jesus, because the same picture was discussed in the current Chronicle of Higher Education, minus the WTC.)

So I suppose Panthera is the Christian rock Pantera or something.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 22 January 2005 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

The Way! Yes, you know I think that was it!

Trayce (trayce), Saturday, 22 January 2005 15:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Not that I can google for that, the phrase is far too common in conjunction with "bible".
