Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

one of several political figures garnering RAZZIE nods this year, President George W. Bush as himself in FAHRENHEIT 9/11, for which performance he is also nominating as Worst Screen Couple paired with either Condoleeza Rice and/or His Pet Goat

This is just a wrong image.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 15:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Electra wuz robbed!

Leon the Fatboy (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 16:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Elektra will be next year, silly.

Napoleon Dynamite was robbed.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 16:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I was about to say, didn't Elektra just come out?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 16:08 (twenty-one years ago)

They have these tv screens dotted around the local shopping mall, which show adverts. The advert for "Catwoman" was still showing 'till just before Christmas 2004, IE MONTHS after the film tanked & dropped out of cinema circulation.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 16:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't care about the year, Elektra must suffer.

Leon the Fatboy (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

So here's your challenge, Elektra vs. Catwoman.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 16:20 (twenty-one years ago)

EVERYBODY WINS (yum)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 16:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I still have to rent Catwoman, but I went into seeing Elektra suspecting it was going to be bad but I had no idea how bad. The only movie I can think of that I've seen lately that was worse was the movie where Xander battles an evil pinata that was on American Movie Classics (?!?!).

Leon the Fatboy (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

The pinata was on AMC? Was he the new host?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 16:26 (twenty-one years ago)

You should really go back to teaching, you seem to miss it.

Leon the Fatboy (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

*bows in acknowledgement*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Everytime I see the poster for Catwoman I paraphrase that line re Citizen Burns. "We did 563 takes and that was her most assertive expression."

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

My personal "jump the shark" moment for AMC (though I'm sure there were a thousand I missed) was when they played The Bride with Sting'n'Beals twice in one night.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 16:40 (twenty-one years ago)

christ that is the dumbest fucking hat of all time

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 16:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha ha The Bride was on just after Pinata.

Leon the Fatboy (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 16:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd pay to see Jennifer Beals hang Sting from the ceiling and beat him like a pinata. Sam Raimi would do an excellent job filming that.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 16:53 (twenty-one years ago)

AMC is so fucking sad. From Citizen Kane unedited and widescreen to four hours of The Bride with ads.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 16:57 (twenty-one years ago)

AMC likes to show the Predator from time to time. God bless their network.

Juan, the Magic Don (jingleberries), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 17:54 (twenty-one years ago)

WOMAN! BRING ME MY STRAW-MEN SO THAT I MIGHT KNOCK THEM DOWN!

modJ on teh road, Tuesday, 25 January 2005 18:40 (twenty-one years ago)

leon is so right about elektra. what a turd.

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 01:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I watched Smokey & the Bandit on AMC last night. True story.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 01:18 (twenty-one years ago)

What, it was a documentary?

Curious George Rides a Republican (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 01:20 (twenty-one years ago)

hahaha. I wonder if Michael Moore would show up to accept any of his awards.

kingfish (Kingfish), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 01:26 (twenty-one years ago)

The only movie I can think of that I've seen lately that was worse was the movie where Xander battles an evil pinata that was on American Movie Classics (?!?!).

Did it have a beach theme?

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 01:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I trust I hardly need to mention that Fox News and its ilk are all gloating over 9/11's five nominations... while studiously ignoring the fact that all five nominations are not aimed at the film itself but rather the current administration (and Razzie un-sacred cow Britney Spears... who, should she win, has to be considered among the shortest roles ever to win an award).

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 11:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, same news outlets seem to be taking The Passion's three Oscar nominations against 9/11's 5 Razz nods as some sort of mandate.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 11:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Did it have a beach theme?

Yes, it did. Here's the synopsis from amazon:

Piñata: Survival Island

A group of college fraternity and sorority kids show up for an island adventure, the annual Cinco de Mayo treasure hunt. The testosterone runs high and the scheming is down and dirty to collect the most underwear before crossing the finish line. The fun and games soon turn into a contest of survival when two of the co-eds smash an ancient piñata, reviving the demon spirits within. Suddenly the drunken and sexy exploits become hide-from-the-creep. Only something this evil could tear such good friends apart!

Leon the Fatboy (Ex Leon), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 14:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Dude AMC has become so awesome now that they've stopped showing "classics" and have started showing "greatness"

Allyzay Highlights The Fallacy of Radiohead (allyzay), Thursday, 27 January 2005 02:30 (twenty-one years ago)

six months pass...
why didn't ppl like catwoman???

i just saw it and it was fun.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Sunday, 21 August 2005 23:58 (twenty years ago)

it was a very funny movie with the "actual cat" traits. i googled for why ppl. didn't like it and saw that there was some controversy over berry playing a comic book character that wasn't orig. black!

the critical reception was poisoned by racist comic geeks.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 22 August 2005 02:15 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, but you can forgive them. They only get those precious handful of opportunities to spout their racist-comic-geek platform.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 22 August 2005 04:24 (twenty years ago)

i think the critical reception for the film was to a degree understandable since the film was terrible

gear (gear), Monday, 22 August 2005 05:03 (twenty years ago)

i'd start with the costume maybe

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 22 August 2005 05:50 (twenty years ago)

TS: Halle Berry v. Ertha Kitt

Gear is correct, though. And also, you really can't top Michelle Pfeiffer unless you get Julie Newmar from the Wayback Machine.

The Original Jimmy Mod: Kind Warrior (The Famous Jimmy Mod), Monday, 22 August 2005 06:09 (twenty years ago)

why was the film terrible???

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 22 August 2005 06:45 (twenty years ago)

i mean it was supposed to be a comic book frcrissakes -- plot holes and silly morals are part of the point.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 22 August 2005 06:46 (twenty years ago)

my horrible visceral experience will not be excused by genre conventions!

gear (gear), Monday, 22 August 2005 07:03 (twenty years ago)

i don't get the movie's extensive use of CGI cats in shots that would do just fine with real trained cats.

latebloomer's rectal mocha latte (latebloomer), Monday, 22 August 2005 10:32 (twenty years ago)

they saved money on stunt cats, duh!

i'm convinced that the world just wasn't ready for a strong black female character in a comic movie.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 22 August 2005 13:39 (twenty years ago)

uhh x-men dude

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 22 August 2005 13:39 (twenty years ago)

i mean it was supposed to be a comic book frcrissakes -- plot holes and silly morals are part of the point.

*frowns at the looming cloud on the horizon labelled 'THE VENGEANCE OF DAN PERRY'*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 22 August 2005 13:40 (twenty years ago)

i haven't seen catwoman but the "it was SUPPOSED to be bad" argument couldn't be weaker, sorry dude

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 22 August 2005 13:42 (twenty years ago)

Haha I seem to recall that Dan Perry's stance on this was roughly "It was a terrible film. I would like to do terrible things to it. Terrible, sexy things."

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 22 August 2005 13:46 (twenty years ago)

Oh, no question he said that! I'm talking more about Sterling's argument in general re: 'because it's a comic book ergo it must always be flawed,' which I suspect he might disagree with.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 22 August 2005 13:48 (twenty years ago)

that argument really is kind of the nuclear option

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 22 August 2005 13:51 (twenty years ago)

Points in order:

#1: Sterling OTM; the movie was goofy, illogical fun that was really all about Halle Berry slinking around in leather and Sharon Stone chewing scenery. YUM.

#2: Sterling is absolutely dead wrong; the fact that the movie was based on a comic book series does not automatically mean that it HAD to make no sense and be logically inconsistent with its own rules. Furthermore, the movie bore almost no relationship to the comic book it came from; they did some great handwaving to get around that but really this movie should be looked upon as being a portrayal of Catwoman in the same sense that Will Smith's "I, Robot" was a film adaptation of Asimov's seminal stories (ie, they tacked on a scene in post-production to tie the generic rip-off to an already established franchise and prayed that the star's charisma would keep people from noticing but people were to distracted by the star's skin color to bite).

#3: If Halle Berry shows up at my house in that Catwoman outfit, I have already procured permission from my wife to sleep with her. Actually, my wife might sleep with her, too, and my wife is not gay.

#4: Seriously people, DID NO ONE ELSE SEE THOSE PANTS ON HER?????? WTF are you complaining about??????????

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Monday, 22 August 2005 14:02 (twenty years ago)

(#5: I didn't see "Elektra" because Jennifer Garner is cute and all but not nearly smoking hot enough to make me pay for a movie.)

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Monday, 22 August 2005 14:03 (twenty years ago)

it was a bit campy and i think ppl were expecting noir -- i mean, a woman gets actual catlike qualities imbued by not a big black creepy cat but a cute striped tabby. so she's like afraid of the rain and eats fish but is v. nimble and etc.

the plot holes were pretty minor, and a silly moral isn't bad at all! i mean silly morals and plot holes are at the heart of lots of great movies.

the stepping through the prison bars scene was awesome.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 22 August 2005 14:08 (twenty years ago)

also dan, like ok i haven't read comics in years but i read ilc and it seems like absurdity and plot holes and wtf moments are a huge part of the enjoyment factor?

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 22 August 2005 14:09 (twenty years ago)

For reference:

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 22 August 2005 14:10 (twenty years ago)

i'm only sorry we didn't get ms. berry lapping milk from a saucer (or did i just miss it?)

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 22 August 2005 14:12 (twenty years ago)

The trick is to think of it less as 'enjoyment factor', and more as 'healing process'.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 22 August 2005 14:14 (twenty years ago)

Ha - judging comics by the general slant of ILC talk is the wrong way to go, Sterling, as usually the stuff that inspires the best talk over thar is the absurd plot-holed WTF stuff - the "good" stuff usually gets a "yeah, it is good, ain't it?" once-over before we go back to "Iceman's made of urine WTF?"

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 22 August 2005 14:19 (twenty years ago)

ok i mean berry plays a weak fantasy-figure of redeeming racism through having sex in some straight pre-civil-rights wish-fulfillment trip and she gets an Oscar. but she plays an empowered superhero and ppl are like "wait! she can't act! that's not belivable! ppl. sleep with the racist executioners of their husbands all the time, sure, and berry brings that to vivid life! but... a black woman taking charge! i never heard of such a thing!"

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 22 August 2005 14:21 (twenty years ago)

Daver OTM; the absurd plot-holes aren't the most enjoyable, they're just the easiest to talk about!

Also you have highlighted exactly why my sife thinks "Monster's Ball" is the most overrated piece of shit ever released (the exact quote ran along the lines of "I hope they wrote 'Halle Berry's Tits' on that Oscar").

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Monday, 22 August 2005 14:24 (twenty years ago)

they saved money on stunt cats, duh!

but CGI cat cost more than real cats! and a good portion of the kitty CGI was for shots in which a real cat, properly trained, would suffice!

so no, if anything it's a WASTE of money.

latebloomer's rectal mocha latte (latebloomer), Monday, 22 August 2005 14:45 (twenty years ago)

I think your sarcasmometer needs a tuneup, laterbloomer.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Monday, 22 August 2005 14:47 (twenty years ago)

hehehehehe i like making comic-book guy arguments once in a while

latebloomer's rectal mocha latte (latebloomer), Monday, 22 August 2005 14:50 (twenty years ago)

though i really was kinda irked by those damn CGI cats

latebloomer's rectal mocha latte (latebloomer), Monday, 22 August 2005 14:51 (twenty years ago)
