Archery: C/D?

I've been reading a book about the Eurasian Steppe Warriors, and there's a whole chapter called "Horse and Bow," which goes into great depth about bow and arrow construction and technique.

I took archery once in camp, and it was my favorite activity. I don't play any sports, and besides, archery would make a good eccentric affect.

Does anyone out there do it? Are lessons expensive? Are there any good ranges in the NY-NJ area?

In order to keep this thread bumped up, I'm going to post an awesome illustration of an Ottoman archer ("Lords of the Horizon" claims that they could fire backwards at a rate of three arrows per second. Fuck!)

Two words: Robin Hood.

CLASSIC! Sometimes I have these internal aesthetic objections to using composite bows, but then I remember how much easier it is to shoot so much farther with them.

One more word: Legolas!

I had a housemate once who hunted deer with a bow. He was a really cool guy, but his crossbow-hunting pal was a little strange. Conclusion:

Bow and arrow: classic
Crossbow: dud

My sister and her bloke do archery fairly seriously, competing and the like. Equipment=expensive, also travel to shoots etc. But fun for the detail-obsessed lightish sportsperson who wants killer shoulder and back muscles!

Btw nickalicious, they also think compounds are dud. My sis is planning on going further retro and trying the longbow. Agincourt stylee.

That's fucking awesome.

Classic because it's named after me.

Me and this kid I used to shoot with talked for years about going squirrel hunting with our bows. We never did, but I still roffle a little bit inside, conjuring up that mental image of that poor little squirrelly bastard with an arrow through him. And then I remember why they thought I needed to take the meds.

totally classic. I also have an aversion to compound bows, whenever i use(d) them it felt like it was going farther than it should.

i could never imagine having any kind of accuracy shooting from horseback. theres a fucking skill.

Parthian Shot!!!

giboyeux (skowly), Monday, 13 June 2005 17:16 (twenty-one years ago)

There's actually an indoor archery range a few blocks from my apt. I've often thought that maybe my time would be better wasted there than at home playing Xbox.

I wonder if there are clubs of people who still do mounted archery.

Wait, isn't there some weird olympic sport that involves this, like the sextathalon or something?

Hurting (Hurting), Monday, 13 June 2005 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

triathlon?

caitlin (caitlin), Monday, 13 June 2005 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I believe biathlon involves cross-country skiing and shooting, not horseback riding archery.

Hurting (Hurting), Monday, 13 June 2005 23:35 (twenty-one years ago)

it does

oops (Oops), Monday, 13 June 2005 23:40 (twenty-one years ago)

We've invented guns, move on people.
