Uploading Songs from an iPod

I bought a second-hand iPod today and have installed iTunes and begun to upload CDs. However, if I copy the library onto the iPod then I will lose all the albums that are already on it.

1. Can anyone direct me to some freeware that will allow my PC to recognise the music files on the iPod and upload them?

2. Also can someone instruct me how to rename my iPod - it's currently appearing under the last owner's name.

I'm new (and late) to this game and any informtion would be gratefully received.

Check out ipodlounge.com They have links for EVERYTHING, and is a pretty objective site. Very well run, and pretty comprehensive. This was treated very recently, I thinks.

Welcome to the Pod collective. We've been expecting you.

I appreciate ipodlounge, and post there as well (same handle). The factual resources are first-rate, and a few of the mods (honeybee) are fantastically knowledgeable and extraordinarily generous in handing out guidance.

Their FAQ not only addresses this question but will link you to the software you need to do the job.

BTW, they've now changed their name and URL to ilounge.com - because, y'know, the world is bigger than ipod - there's also ipod mini, and ipod color, and ipod shuffle... (their editorial parochialism is often good for a chuckle)

Thanks so much for your posts - I'm about to download the £10 software as I downloaded the free stuff and couldn't get it to open once it was saved.

I couldn't locate instruction on how to change the name of the iPod as recognised in iTunes...

I'm sure this is one of the first things you tried, but click on the iPod on the left pane of iTunes, like you would a file to be renamed, and see if the name becomes editable text?

There's an iPod tab in the options which only appears when an iPod is attached, as well, maybe there.

My iPod's being fixed, which is why I can't actually test these brilliant ideas myself.

if you wanna extract mp3s from an ipod, yr best bets for pc are prob ephpod, xplay and anapod manager. for mac, there's podworks, el ipodo, ipod manager (i think that's what its called) and ilinkpod (the last isnt very good)

This certainly works in the mac version of iTunes. You need to do that slow double-click for it to work.

Don't bother with that. Podworks is free, and works so beautifully on the Mac:

In iTunes I believe you can just, like, rename your iPod like you would rename any playlist.

Lara doesn't have a mac, Paul.

You can extract the MP3s directly yourself by browsing the iPod with 'view hidden & system files' turned on, although they're not in a useful order. (At least this works on the computer I am currently forced to use - a seven-year-old piece of junk running Windows 98.)

Don't forget to enable the iPod for disk use first.
