Are you getting MORE healthy or LESS healthy?

Are you in ascension or decline?

I feel like I'm getting healthier... I'm trying to run more, eat more bananas and tea. I read labels more and avoid saturated fats. I don't buy candy. I do drink alot of beer and wine (probably not that bad) and do smoke on the weekends (bad). I eat a little meat but don't make it a daily thing.

Are you moving forward or are you slipping back into old habits? This is topical because Jerry Garcia died ten years ago, bloated from AM/PM chiliburgers and Marlboro reds.

andy --, Thursday, 11 August 2005 17:17 (twenty years ago)

my increase in daily activity(sedentary desk job -> desk job where i also walk 2-3 miles/day) has probably been accompanied by an increase in beer consumption.

so the answer is a definitive "maybe".

kingfish completely hatstand (Kingfish), Thursday, 11 August 2005 17:20 (twenty years ago)

I am getting healthier, as I have been making a concentrated effort to cut back on desserts and between-meal snacks and to get better at realizing when I'm full. I have been walking every day and may join a gym soon. Yay me!

Though apparently there is fudge in the office kitchen and I've having trouble resisting the temptation.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 11 August 2005 17:21 (twenty years ago)

More holding steady I think. Did a lot of good eating and good walking on my Eurotrip but have felt a bit lazier since my return.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 11 August 2005 17:22 (twenty years ago)

I feel like I'm always getting a little healthier. I think it's an important gradual thing because if you go too healthy too quickly then you won't take it seriously as a permanent lifestyle change. That said, cutting way back on saturated fat and being vigilant about it changed my life completely.

JerryG, Thursday, 11 August 2005 17:53 (twenty years ago)

I dunno. I'm definitely finding as I get older (I'm 31) that I have to exercise more regularly and eat better just to stay the same weight (or increase it only slightly). Also, when I first arrived in New York, I avoided weird American food (orange cheese, peanut better n jelly, heroes etc). Now I love that stuff.

As for other health stuff, don't smoke, and my internal organs are probably fine - should check that out. On a related note, have any males here had prostate / testicular cancer checkups?

paulhw (paulhw), Thursday, 11 August 2005 19:26 (twenty years ago)

I'm getting gradually healthier by making exercise a normal part of my weekly routine, and by eating slightly less pizza and slightly more salads. I probably weigh a few more pounds that I did a few years ago, though (but less than I did six months ago!).

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 11 August 2005 19:32 (twenty years ago)

I think I'm the same health-wise, but have just become more aware of it over the years. I always ate fruit and vegetables, always exercised somehow, didn't smoke or eat a lot of fast food or saturated fats (hello, hippy westcoast upbringing...). Yeah, when the fat started to creep on in my mid-20s, I had to tweak my diet and exercise (less coconut buns and skittles, more almonds and, yeah, salads). I'm stronger now, I think, but still have a bit of a tum (with a six-pack just under the surface.) It might go away with all the jogging and swimming I've taken up, but whatever - I've decided I'm not going to give up fresh Polish bread or beer on a sunny afternoon just for that.

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Thursday, 11 August 2005 19:57 (twenty years ago)

If "healthy" is a euphemism for "fat", then I am getting healthier by the week.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Thursday, 11 August 2005 20:00 (twenty years ago)

kinda tough to say...
I've all but cut out sugar and I avoid anything with partially hydrogenated whatthefuckever. All of my calories come from fresh, fruits, veggies, nuts, brown rice, and lean cuts of chicken & fish. I lift weights 3X/ week, swim and/or bike 2 or 3 times a week.

OTOH, since being single, my binge-drinking that's usually been relegated to the weekends has slowly crept into the weeknights (always social, though. I don't sit around the house and booze). I've never smoked cigs and save for an occasional joint, haven't really done a lot of drugs since college. But I think I've more than made up for it in liquor. Hmm.

Will(iam), Thursday, 11 August 2005 20:22 (twenty years ago)

Definitely hit a wall when I turned 30 beyond which losing weight has become impossible, but i'm maintaining pretty well and go to the gym regularly, whereas in my early 20s it was all junk, all the time and no physical activity.

PeopleFunnyBoy (PeopleFunnyBoy), Thursday, 11 August 2005 20:45 (twenty years ago)

andy --, Thursday, 11 August 2005 20:54 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I was going to say that too. Even if you throw booze into the equation, still sounds pretty healthy.
While we all are being a little body-neurotic, how many of you have resigned yourself to a certain body (fat, chunky, thin, etc)? Like PeopleFunnyBoy, I'm maintaining, but can't see myself easily becoming strappingly toned again...

paulhw (paulhw), Thursday, 11 August 2005 20:56 (twenty years ago)

but dude, my liver! I think my "active lifestyle" has more to do with nervous energy than with any real desire to be super-fit. hey, maybe it'll offset some of my more unsavory tendencies.

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Thursday, 11 August 2005 21:11 (twenty years ago)

I've resigned myself to my body type: tall and skinny. I tried a few times to put on some pounds but I lose them again if I didn't keep at it. I saw some 1930's old pictures of my dad's uncles and shit from the old days and they all look like me, over 6' and skinny with big old ape arms hanging down. So it goes! Could be worse.

andy --, Thursday, 11 August 2005 21:13 (twenty years ago)

Less healthy because the older I get the closer I get to DEATH which is the ultimate bad health event.

Probably healthier, apart from the cumulative effects of smoking, a habit to which I cling. Gym attendance, dance class, normal daily walking & stair climbing are all doing their part. I have been much thinner in my adult life but at that time I was basically starving and drinking all my calories as BOOZE so I daresay I am actually healthier when 20 lbs heavier but fit. Also, hel-LO muscle mass.

Laurel, Thursday, 11 August 2005 23:51 (twenty years ago)

well i'm thirty, i've quit smoking, i hike about 6 miles a day 3-4 days a week, eat little meat now other than chicken and fish (the latter mostly in sushi form), although i indulge in the occasional barbeque. i still drink a couple nights per week. but i don't eat candy anymore and i haven't had soda for 18 months, instead drinking lots of juice, tea, and water.

gear (gear), Friday, 12 August 2005 00:00 (twenty years ago)

Haven't smoked for 8 months now, which has had the effect of cutting my alcohol consumption way down also(I suppose it's a good thing drinking and smoking got mixed in together in my mind, one has never been fun without the other for me). I'm skinny and have trouble keeping on weight, I work out a few times a week but everytime I'm about to break through to a new dawn of musclyness I become ill. Right now I have a cold, after sticking to a regimen of weightlifting and yoga for two weeks, one time when I was working myself into the best shape of my life, I got the worst flu in my life, couldn't move for two weeks. It just occurred to me while typing this that it might be psychosomatic.

tremendoid (tremendoid), Friday, 12 August 2005 00:05 (twenty years ago)

I've gone from eating probably too much to almost not eating at all, so I reckon I'm healthier. A few years ago I did a stint of not eating for over two months and I was pretty much fine, so I reckon if I just eat a couple of tomatoes and drink some soup every two days I'll be fine. And Andy's always looked very healthy to me, so don't believe his hype, man.

emil.y (emil.y), Friday, 12 August 2005 00:16 (twenty years ago)

i'm getting healthier definitely, it's been a gradual process over about 3 years. first i gave up smoking cigarettes, then i gave up smoking dope, then i gave up binge drinking during the week, then i gave up binge drinking on weekends, then i gave up my recreational drug use and as of the last 12 months or so i go to bed early and eat really healthy stuff as well. i like to tell myself that i haven't become boring and old but all indications seem to be to the contrary. on the upside i never really get sick or tired and have boundless amounts of energy and happiness now.

gem (trisk), Friday, 12 August 2005 00:34 (twenty years ago)

more healthy, but i still have an unforgivingly slow metabolism. i'm definitely eating more healthful/natural food now than i did when i was at my skinniest -- back then, i lived on coffee, slim-fast shakes, and gross dining hall food. now i'm all about fresh veggies and whole grains and staying away from artificial nastiness.

some stockholm cindy talking (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 12 August 2005 02:20 (twenty years ago)

i've gotten really healthy over the summer, started running 5 days a week and eating fruit and vegetables a little more and not overdoing it on the desserts. okay, that's really healthy by *my* standards, if not a nutritionist's :) however, i'm still a few pounds overweight. if i find it this impossible to lose weight at age 20, i'm probably going to be quite fat by middle age.

omg i am in acension. starting with the low point of a rare, major bone tumor in my femur just a few years back, a HELLACIOUS surgery and recovery (the recovery time for this surgery is 2 years and I basically have a reconstructed leg). I am just starting to mend up and get everything in line. also battled a bout with hypothyroidism, starting to get that under control. things are looking up.

five years pass...

I learned in the NY Times Mag yesterday that I can improve my health by

sleeping 7-8 hours a night
cutting out all refined sugar
fidgeting while sitting

Going for 1 out of 3.

your generation appalls me (Dr Morbius), Monday, 18 April 2011 15:07 (fifteen years ago)

Definitely more healthy -- lost 25 pounds last year, more exercise, cutting back on salt etc. -- though getting older and creakier bit by bit nonetheless. Oh well, balances out.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 18 April 2011 15:12 (fifteen years ago)

you'd be surprised how much cutting out sugar helps your overall well-being; I mean that's Steve Nash's big secret to being an NBA superstar despite being a short 37-year old white guy

the easiest step is to just cut out soda most of the time, it's bad for you in more ways than you might think, besides if you only get it when you go out or whatever, it'll taste so much better

frogbs, Monday, 18 April 2011 15:14 (fifteen years ago)

Very true. I really only have it once a week at most, and even then I usually get iced tea anyway.

Soda?? Can't remember the last time I had one.

And: Healthier!

Back up the lesbian canoe (Laurel), Monday, 18 April 2011 15:19 (fifteen years ago)

I hit the bottom of a double-dip weight gain last fall, hitting over 240, which was my previous limit. I cut out most soda and all alcohol about 5 months ago. Additionally, I started eating healthier lunches and dinners and trying to squeeze in cardio a few times a week. I thought I would see more results right off the bat, but haven't lost much. At least I'm not bulging out of my slacks like I was last year, but I figured that quitting drinking would have had more of an effect.

see, this is odd to me and is compelling to hear people talk about w/r/t casual vs. serious athletic activity. I never purposefully sought out sugar nor drank soda until I became a semi-serious athlete, and now I can't live without it. Obviously I'm Steve Shasta and not Steve Nash but my understanding is that you need sugar (simple carbs) to sustain intense energy output over long periods, it is absolutely critical.

What you need for intense athletic activity is a completely different realm from normal nutrition, imo.

mh, Monday, 18 April 2011 15:36 (fifteen years ago)

I dunno I've been pretty successful with weight loss, but there are so many factors to it; eating spicy food is huge, it boosts your metabolism and makes you eat slower (and therefore less); but I think that just cutting out everything altogether is kind of a mistake since it makes you overcompensate in some ways. Like, your aim should be to drink less alcohol and eat less unhealthy food, but if you cut it out altogether your life will kind of suck. I dunno, maybe watch your salt intake; tough to lose weight when you eat a lot of salt, and it's very very easy to eat a lot of salt

frogbs, Monday, 18 April 2011 15:37 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, intense athletic activity can go to hell

Removing soda and salt from your diet is a good way to start. Win some, lose some though: I never drink soda yet I consume a quarter bottle of wine every night. Yeah, yeah – I know red wine is supposed to be "healthy."

I can't claim to be a real expert on the topic but my guess is that you want to get your sugars from fruits rather than processed stuff.

My grandparents were huge health nuts and used to do this thing in elementary schools where they'd feed the kids nothing but healthy, boring food for one day, then all junk food the next, and then ask the kids to choose which they preferred; in general too much sugar really gets you down and makes you lazy

frogbs, Monday, 18 April 2011 15:40 (fifteen years ago)

I think my daily habits are pretty unhealthy at the minute, but not to the extent where I really care that much.

mh, Monday, 18 April 2011 15:41 (fifteen years ago)

Probably less healthy. I gave blood last month and got a letter from the donation center the next week that said "dude, your bad cholesterol was 340, you might want to do something about that." My weight is pretty much holding steady, though; my BP was fine at donation time, and I gave up soft drinks a few years ago. I've had maybe a case of beer over the last year; just drink 2 cups of coffee in the a.m., otherwise water.

the wages of sin is about tree fiddy (WmC), Monday, 18 April 2011 15:45 (fifteen years ago)

frogbs, Monday, 18 April 2011 15:46 (fifteen years ago)

I'd say good, in that it enables me to hold a job. Don't put ANY sweetener in mine, only 1% milk, and max 3 cups daily.

so much healthier since going freelance in '08. less of a full-on fitness drive than just a generally healthier lifestyle. am way too lazy and loath to give up nice things like drinking to do things like set ~targets~ or get obsessive about what i eat or even join a gym - but it's more about integrating things like regular running and workouts into my daily life (that's kinda why i didn't join the gym, they worked so why shell out money for the same results?). i don't go out of my way to eat healthily, but i rarely eat crap junk food anyway (never drink soda, hardly ever buy crisps/chocolate). can't imagine drinking every day, even in my heaviest weeks i'll usually have at least 3 days of no booze at all. i recommend healthiness!

Move it all around just like Jane Fonda now

Chilling excerpt for Tracer!

It’s entirely different to claim that one particularly cherished aspect of our diet might not just be an unhealthful indulgence but actually be toxic, that when you bake your children a birthday cake or give them lemonade on a hot summer day, you may be doing them more harm than good, despite all the love that goes with it.

atm my health is quite good, and well above average for my age cohort, but now that I am past 55 a realistic assessment tells me I am past my grand climateric and have entered my declining years, so that the best I can do is to make the downslope as gentle and gradual as I possibly can. So far, so good on that plan.

Aimless, Monday, 18 April 2011 17:36 (fifteen years ago)

Hmmm, I see from a quick consultation of wikipedia that the 63rd year is usually considered one's "grand climateric", although 49 and 81 are also considered as candidate years.
