Admittedly. But it was subject-appropriate, and I though of it.

He's such a ineffectual pinhead.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 16 September 2005 00:18 (twenty years ago)

I hate the way he pronounces the word hundred as "hunderd".

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 16 September 2005 00:19 (twenty years ago)

jesus. all the military talk. "deployed", "armies of compassion"

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Friday, 16 September 2005 00:20 (twenty years ago)

You'd think his public speeking skills would've improved by this point in his second fuckin' term.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 16 September 2005 00:20 (twenty years ago)

also, remember that his accent has been deliberately exaggerated in the last few years...

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Friday, 16 September 2005 00:21 (twenty years ago)

There was the obligatory September 11th allusion.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 16 September 2005 00:22 (twenty years ago)

i think that's what gets me every time. he's such a loser. how could so many people fall for such a loser? i can understand a charismatic bobblehead like Reagan, but bush is so meepy.

I can't believe he's only just now making this speech. 2 1/2 weeks later!

Sparkle Motion's Rising Force, Friday, 16 September 2005 00:25 (twenty years ago)

i can't stand the godheads and the way that they crave pain and disaster just so they can show people that they still have the heartbeat of america beating within them as they survey the wreckage that is their life/country/town/dented hyundai. what is with this erection for pluckiness in times of national fucking horror? can't people just be horrified for a while?

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 16 September 2005 00:26 (twenty years ago)

what is with this erection for pluckiness in times of national fucking horror?

standard item; the "pluckiness" of all local populations after a major disaster.

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Friday, 16 September 2005 00:28 (twenty years ago)

"I can't believe he's only just now making this speech. 2 1/2 weeks later!"

well, he drove around fucking new orleans for fucking ever looking for a good place to park his megaphone, but all the dead bodies got in the way of the cameras!! so he finally had to just go it alone on his nice little set there.

I don't even want to think about how fucked up this land lottery is going to be. You know that all the prime land will be put in the hands of real-estate developers 'to provide retail services and infrastructure.' And they'll shuffle off all the poor people to swamps.

At least he didn't call the Hurricane "evil" or try to tell us that Kim Jong Il had been linked to "hurricane-related program activities"

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 16 September 2005 03:33 (twenty years ago)

One thing that occurred to me a while ago re his obsessive repetition of "hard work":

Obviously that phrase resonates with him, because he drags it into almost every situation, even when it's not necessarily in his script. Of course it's "hard work" being president, but no president I can think of ever felt the need to tell us so. It seems like something that would just be understood. But then, I can't think of another president for whom the presidency was the first real job they'd ever had. OK, he was governor of Texas, but that's basically a part-time position. I think it's possible that he really thinks it's some kind of special that he actually does "hard work," that he sits through meetings that bore him, that he has to try to absorb information and act on it. He considers it a major intrusion on his life if he can't be in bed by 10, or take his epic vacations. I think it's possible -- hell, likely -- that he really believes he's working really hard, and that that in itself imbues him with some kind of virtue.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Friday, 16 September 2005 03:45 (twenty years ago)

I know it's not saying much, but I think it was the best speech of his career. Then again, he's facing down the worst failure of his presidency...

He mentioned "poverty" and "racial discrimination" in concecutive sentences, for starters. And it looks as if many conservatives will roll left with their president.

Pete Scholtes, Friday, 16 September 2005 03:46 (twenty years ago)

he could have done without the "funeral dirge" swill at the end. and the "hand of god"/"god bless america" swill too.

i dunno, one thing dubya's good at is saying stuff he thinks ammuricans want to hear. and his laying out of all the social services being put into place... well, that's nice, but if you guys had actually done what you were supposed to be doing earlier on, would the victims still have such "bright futures" ahead? no, they'd be just as nonexistent as they were before.

s/c (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 16 September 2005 03:55 (twenty years ago)

i agree with that. funny how this matches up with the whole calvin/protestant work ethic, too. Hard work is virtuous, etc.

also, the line is a defense. "Hey, don't judge me so hard! This shit is hard work! I'd like to see you do better." With this repeated declaration, it's like he's continually trying to excuse himself from criticism by reminding you of the immense effort he's (claiming that he's) putting into this. "Oh, we can't judge georgie too much; look how hard he's trying!"

xpost

And it looks as if many conservatives will roll left with their president.

where are you getting that? too many of them are going on about "opportunity"/"ownership", "this is proof that the gubmint can't work". No disaster or complete public services meltdown is too great for them to quickly shake it off and follow with talking points...

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Friday, 16 September 2005 03:56 (twenty years ago)

why wasn't the government helping the unemployed people of new orleans get jobs BEFORE the hurricane? oh yeah, god helps those who help themselves, except when there's an act of god, then the govt steps in.

s/c (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 16 September 2005 03:58 (twenty years ago)

god helps those who help themselves, except when there's an act of god, then the govt steps in.

....and then declares a National Day of Prayer(as Jon Stewart pointed out).

he could have done without the "funeral dirge" swill at the end.

I actually thought this was effective and almost kind of necessary. (I'd love to know the behind-the-scenes story of someone briefing Bush on what a "second line" is.)

Look, folks, I'm no apologist of this president, but the speech, however unconvincing to those who rightly recognize his failure in this disaster, and who are rightly skeptical of a government that's not even housing, marks a huge change in Bush toward his conservative base.

And check out the "I'll open my wallet" responses from Little Green Footballs:

-- Alex in NYC (vassife...), September 16th, 2005

Do you really think he doesn't know what he's saying? Even if he didn't realise his errors, you're right, they would have been pointed out to him long ago. Bush is smarter than he acts. It suits him to to speak like that. People see him as 'someone they wouldn't mind sharing a beer with'. Don't get me wrong, im a Bush hater like the majority of the board, but that way of thinking is why the Dems lost the election.

splates (splates), Saturday, 17 September 2005 09:33 (twenty years ago)

I think a whole lot of this is just hokum, talking about big things that will never be funded, just like so many other grand proposals that have come out of Bush's mouth. There going to drop $200 billion into this recovery without raising taxes, in fact by dropping some taxation. "Watch me as a pull a rabbit out of my hat...shazaam!" Bush might as well said the govt is going to send the flood water to Mars on ten thousand silver spaceships. It would sound just about as probable.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Saturday, 17 September 2005 11:24 (twenty years ago)

So, wait, you guys don't like Bush?

JKex (JKex), Saturday, 17 September 2005 11:26 (twenty years ago)

Umm, I can't tell. But I think most people here are big Bush supporters.

To tell you, the woman I love
That I'm having a baby by a woman that I barely even know
I hope you can accept the fact that I'm man enough to tell you this.
