the summer i spent doing taking two 2nd year summer courses, french and philosophy, in a sleepy college town. worked nights in a magazine store, reading punk planet, harpers, the new yorker and atlantic cover to cover and then going to do an all-night radio show once a week. one night taking requests every fifteen minutes from a bunch of kids on their first acid trip. walking everywhere. broke butmaking rent and ramen money, in a new town, pretty much only knew 4 or 5 people, all of whom happened to be great. read moby dick and master and margarita. learned how to silkscreen t-shirts. got a $5 haircut every couple of weeks from a couple of weeks from an old man named ralph who said, "nice day for a haircut" everytime I walked in, no matter what the weather.

i'd say either the first four years of working life (20-24), or perhaps, ironically in many ways, now.

Now, mostly. Couple of things looming, but hey.

My early twenties were great, but now is really really great. My kids are adults and I've regained a lot of freedom. My 86-year-old mother needs a bit of attention, but even so. Nothing beats having childrearing behind you. Hallefuckinglujah.

Hurrah for generalities!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 22 September 2005 03:07 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, probably now. Girlfriend, band, no kids, decent-paying job, cool apartment at reasonable rent, feelin that "freedom, with responsibility" vibe.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Thursday, 22 September 2005 04:09 (twenty years ago)

Summer of '93. I had a sweet girlfriend, roommates over 21, no job, no school, I walked around barefoot, and the KP behind my house sold packs of Marlboros for $1.30.

Tomorrow, I will be carefree again.
