There's so much to answer for!

Bay
Union
Baker
Duval
Palm Beach
Polk
Wakulla
Gadsden
Clay
Volusia
Orange

And out of those, Polk seems like the pits.

what was your basis for choosing those specifically?

Duval = Jacksonville. THE most rubbishy.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 22 September 2005 04:48 (twenty years ago)

Actually, wait, Glades County might be the most rubbish. One of the main roads leading into the county is closed for the next 60 years because it'll take that long for the county to afford to resurface it.

A lot of those are really depressing rural counties. Union's got Raiford (the state penitentiary) to add to that, and Gadsden's got the state mental hospital in its favour for being rubbish. Polk County scares me -- I think I've only encountered one person native to there who wasn't an outright lunatic. Bay County's got Panama City -- enough said! Palm Beach is obvious, Volusia has Daytona and I've never liked it there, Orange has Orlando, Duval contains Jacksonville (there's a reason why the locals call it Bubbaville) and Clay contains some of the outlying parts of the city (like Orange Park and Middleburg -- home of the horrifying Ham Jam festival).

Gee, looks like there's a whole wonderful world beyond Dade that ripe for exploration. Goody.

No seriously, I am very much looking forward to exploring northern Florida. Doesn't seem like there's much reason to drive from Miami, though. Better to fly.

Awww, you're not going to drive a bulldozer up here?

Didn't realize it was BYOB...but yeah, I can do that! I'll slap on a bumper sticker with GUBERNATORIAL MANSION OR BUST and hit the road.

BUST GUBERNATORIAL MANSION OR BUST? BUST JEB OR BUST? hmm.

Thea (Thea), Thursday, 22 September 2005 13:18 (twenty years ago)

eh... i can see your point with some of those. never been a huge fan of orlando... it seems like the perfect example of why sprawl can be painful to live around. especially noncoastal secretly swampy sprawl. of course, i know folks that love it there. etc.

i grew up on the east coast of fl, so i'm a bit defensive of it. regardless of the shitty aspects of places like daytona or jacksonville, there are nice beach towns in both those counties that more than make up for things.

i'd probably be inclined to pick one of the rural counties bordering GA if i had to choose. even those would have adequate supplies of: inner tube/spring action, bbq, and antique stores.

this is off-topic, but msp please recommend some good beach towns in Florida.

hmmm... i might recommend ponce inlet/st. augustine. closer to you... cocoa beach... or even jupiter beach.

i'm not sure if any of those towns is going to compete with a big ass metro area like miami as far as providing all the comforts, etc etc.

ponce inlet/st. augustine has the colonial charm + quiet beaches that aren't totally overrun by springbreaker style tourism (which cocoa might be)... or the richy/gaudy thing of jupiter beach (being right up from palm beach)...

of course, bear in mind that it's been a few years since i've been to any of these beaches, so i can't say if things have changed.

oh wait... not ponce inlet! that's daytona! oops. crap, what is that inlet's name?

msp (mspa), Thursday, 22 September 2005 13:36 (twenty years ago)

The area around Mexico Beach (southeast of Panama City) isn't overrun with tourists or condominiums at all and they've still got white quartz sands. St. George Island is slightly more developed than that but still doesn't have massive towers along it. However, that's north Florida again.

Ian Riese-Moraine: Let this bastard out, and you'll get whiplash! (Eastern Mantr, Thursday, 22 September 2005 13:50 (twenty years ago)

mantanza's inlet.... but really, a lot of the beaches around st. augustine's are pretty nice. nice, fine white sand as opposed to the harsh shell you might see in jupiter beach or flagler beach...

not a lot of people though, which is cool. of course, if you want overrun, ormond beach is good. probably a suburban version of the kinds of things you'd find in miami tho.

?

yeah, the west coast and north west florida coast has some really nice places here and there. not an easy drive from miami tho. even st. augustine is a trek.

msp (mspa), Thursday, 22 September 2005 13:55 (twenty years ago)

yeah give me a fish shack and some quietude, that'd do it. no need for metro area antics

Thea (Thea), Thursday, 22 September 2005 14:00 (twenty years ago)

most of florida on the coast is like that.

drive north about 90-120 miles like to ft. pierce or any one of those towns. head east to a1a or route 1, whatever is closer to the beach there and just drive next to the ocean until you find a stretch that's mostly inhabited. fish shacks abound in any direction.
