mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 22 September 2005 02:41 (twenty years ago)

for some reason i can't log in.

I wouldn't go to Houston anytime soon. They are moving NO evacuees out of here to Ark. so we can accept Galveston evacuees. Boy these people's lives are shit right now.

And the second top local news story tonight? How will Rita affect the ACL festival.

MissMisery, Thursday, 22 September 2005 02:49 (twenty years ago)

I saw that bit of news, Sam. TXCN had the people of KVUE talking about the plans for the ACL fest and how the planners have the concerns of the fans first and foremost in their minds, etc. It was a rather small chunk of repeated TXCN content so I don't know how annoyingly inappropriate that might've been in the grand scale of things, but even if it were, it does seem pertinent. It's a local event that'll probably be impacted by Rita, so.... On the same token, the local news HERE has talked in rather serious tones how Friday night high school football games would be moved up a day to tomorrow night because of Rita, which is equally as absurd but also equally as sensible and relevant.

(This Field Left Blank) (Dee the Lurker), Thursday, 22 September 2005 03:24 (twenty years ago)

BTW, I'm starting to get this sinking feeling that all of the hubbub locally is going to be all much ado about very little, if anything at all. I don't really see that much of an impact being made locally from what'll be going on in the Gulf Coast. Mind you, I'd be more than happy to eat my words if it turns out the crazed mad frenzy for bottled water, batteries, flashlights, and generators WILL have been handy and useful, but TBH I don't see how Rita will hit us aside from the massive influx of evacuees coming in from the Houston area and from Corpus Christi.

(This Field Left Blank) (Dee the Lurker), Thursday, 22 September 2005 03:28 (twenty years ago)

i will be in houston tuesday night!

Yes and if it stays at a 4 or 5 there will be flooding as far as Houston. As far inland as here (Austin) we're told to expect 60-70mph winds, 2-4 inches of rain, possible flooding and power outages and isolated tornadoes. Fun!

quincie, Thursday, 22 September 2005 12:05 (twenty years ago)

Oops. Ahem:

I can only imagine that the geniuses who decided to build a P4 BIOHAZARD CONTAINMENT LABORATORY at the University of Texas Medical Branch--Galveston are hating their lives right now. How to get rid of the ebola, anthrax, lassa, etc.?

quincie, Thursday, 22 September 2005 12:06 (twenty years ago)

well, we got a staff email this morning asking for voulnteers to house staff & faculty evacuees from our sister institutions. They had a checklist of what you would accept (cats, smokers) inc. an "other". Perhaps they're hoping someone will write in "ebola"?

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Thursday, 22 September 2005 12:10 (twenty years ago)

"Oh, no problem, mad scientist--you can just stick that ebola in my freezer next to the popsicles!"

quincie, Thursday, 22 September 2005 12:12 (twenty years ago)

that is sort of funny but not really, of course

I hope this doesn't turn out very badly

Wonder what they make of this:

the repaired levees in New Orleans are failing.

Dozens of blocks in the Ninth Ward were under water as a waterfall at least 30 feet wide poured over and through a dike that had been used to patch breaks in the Industrial Canal levee. On the street that runs parallel to the canal, the water ran waist-deep and was rising fast. Guidry said water was rising about three inches a minute.

Horrible.

My brother in law is working in the Garden District which I think is on other side of town from 9th Ward. Any news/updates are good to have; I don't have a tv. He hadn't heard about the levee break when we called him.

Boy, it's looking weird out there right now. The sky's all dark-grey. The wind is blowing from an indeterminate location. Squirrels shouldn't have any problems finding acorns after this weekend.

I mean, look at this. That little orange hamster's got his eye on Pine Bluff!
