other films that have been on TV this include

East is East!
Five Easy Pieces! (this is great but still)
10!
12 Angry Men! (also great i guess)
Crash
The Shawshak Redemption

and

Private Benjamin!!!!!

jed_ (jed), Friday, 23 September 2005 22:17 (twenty years ago)

I haven't seen 12 Angry Men on the TV for ages! Or the Shawshank Redemption, come to think of it. Unless you're counting other, non-terrestrial, channels.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 23 September 2005 22:23 (twenty years ago)

Shawshank.. is on in the US all the time. It's apparently cheap to air.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 23 September 2005 22:24 (twenty years ago)

twelve angry men is a daytime staple, ailsa.

jed_ (jed), Friday, 23 September 2005 22:24 (twenty years ago)

Shawshank.. is on in the US all the time. It's apparently cheap to air.

Prison labor.

M. V. (M.V.), Friday, 23 September 2005 22:26 (twenty years ago)

I'm so jealous of UK television. Five Easy Pieces is one of my favs. 12 Angry Men is great too.

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 23 September 2005 22:26 (twenty years ago)

Oh, OK. Last time I noticed it being on the telly it was on after midnight on ITV, which is the graveyard of shit films, and I was quite surprised. That was a while back, mind, and I don't tend to look and see what films are on through the day.

(xx-post)

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 23 September 2005 22:26 (twenty years ago)

"Scent of a Woman" must be free to air then.

xpost - i don't mind if they put on 5 easy or 12 angry as often as they like. i'm struggling to think of the other films that seem to be on constanly. the problem is that you think "this is always on" then you forget the fim until the next time it airs.

jed_ (jed), Friday, 23 September 2005 22:29 (twenty years ago)

jed- 12 Angry Men hasn't been on daytime terrestial since 2000. I know this because I always watch 12 Angry Men every time its on TV. It usually airs on ITV at around 2 in the morning nowadays, and, yes, this comes to be about once a year now.

Scent of a Woman is a great call.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 23 September 2005 22:32 (twenty years ago)

Deep Impact! Volcano! Dante's Peak! Armageddon! Some other big blockbusting (and rubbish) action movies!

(someone is going to mention The Great Escape, aren't they?)

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 23 September 2005 22:33 (twenty years ago)

other films that have been on TV this* include

this week.

jed_ (jed), Friday, 23 September 2005 22:33 (twenty years ago)

Dom, "Scent of a woman" is on right now, YOU ARE MISSING IT!

jed_ (jed), Friday, 23 September 2005 22:34 (twenty years ago)

Gattaca? That one where Harrison Ford is the president?

sgs (sgs), Friday, 23 September 2005 22:35 (twenty years ago)

I eat bee

On one hand I've got myself to blame (Lynskey), Friday, 23 September 2005 22:36 (twenty years ago)

I've somehow seen E. Murphy's Nutty Professor like 5 agonizing times on broadcast TV... usually on FOX I think.

andy --, Friday, 23 September 2005 22:57 (twenty years ago)

The Three Muskateers with Oliver Reed is always fucking on. Every single time I switch on the TV on a Saturday afternoon it seems to be there.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 23 September 2005 23:01 (twenty years ago)

I thought Shawshank was cheap to air because TBS acquired the rights to it, so that wouldn't explain why it's on all the time in the UK. unless there's some UK channel that's affiliated with Turner?

oops (Oops), Friday, 23 September 2005 23:07 (twenty years ago)

I have rarely seen many of these films on UK TV.

Tremors and Capricorn One, however, are perpetual staples of that great BBC1 after midnight slot.

Luckily, I love Tremors and Capricorn One. And I did watch some of 10 the other day and it was great, but then I had to go to bed.

Ally C (Ally C), Friday, 23 September 2005 23:11 (twenty years ago)

god yes, i love Tremors. all action films should have Fred Ward in them.

jed_ (jed), Friday, 23 September 2005 23:13 (twenty years ago)

One Of Our Dinosaurs Is Missing was on telly every Easter, half term, Christmas and summer holiday when I was at primary school.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Friday, 23 September 2005 23:46 (twenty years ago)

Raging Bull
North by Northwest (Five showed this like twice in four months)
Some Like it Hot
Alien
Aliens
Alien 3
Annie Hall
Young Frankenstein
Blazing Saddles
Groundhog Day
Lock Stock

Masked Gazza, Saturday, 24 September 2005 00:10 (twenty years ago)

annie hall and hannah & sisters are on tcm all the time (not that i'm complaining).

lauren (laurenp), Saturday, 24 September 2005 00:11 (twenty years ago)

Two more perennials on tomorrow night:
My Son the Fanatic (show something else with Om Puri in it you bastards, or alternatively My Beautiful Launderette)
The Missouri Breaks

Masked Gazza, Saturday, 24 September 2005 00:22 (twenty years ago)

I was sure that this was going to be the thread about My Best Friend's Wedding, the world's least romantic romantic comedy, which is on ALL THE TIME on E4, Film Four, and Film Four weekly.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Saturday, 24 September 2005 05:47 (twenty years ago)

Psychomania used to turn up on the BBC1 graveyard slot about once every 9 months, but this seems to have slowed down to about once every 4 years now.

Matt #2 (Matt #2), Saturday, 24 September 2005 07:42 (twenty years ago)

What about Mission Impossible? They played it twice on the same channel this year!

nathalie, a bum like you (stevie nixed), Saturday, 24 September 2005 07:54 (twenty years ago)

Stephen King's "Sleepwalkers".

melton mowbray (adr), Saturday, 24 September 2005 10:02 (twenty years ago)

The Wedding bloody Singer or the double annual (at least) fave Pretty Woman (in Australia, but assuming this is probably a universal scourge)

salexander (salexander), Saturday, 24 September 2005 10:13 (twenty years ago)

Peeping Tom, or so they tell me.

k/l (Ken L), Saturday, 24 September 2005 10:23 (twenty years ago)

Don't Look Now is on a fuck of a lot as well.

jed_ (jed), Saturday, 24 September 2005 10:32 (twenty years ago)

when i started watching the ch4 matinees (b&w war films, ealing comedies etc) every day i also started writing down what i saw and when (i was unemployed). was about 13 months before they started coming around again. odd things, like Dunkirk and similar themed movies, were repeated a lot sooner because of various anniversaries.

things like Gone In 60 Seconds seem to be on itv2 every other week. (but this is good, i generally approve of having more opportunity to catch things)

koogs (koogs), Saturday, 24 September 2005 11:37 (twenty years ago)

Oh, Stephen King's 'It' has been on a lot too.

Ally C (Ally C), Saturday, 24 September 2005 12:48 (twenty years ago)

She's all that.
I could have sworn Groundhog Day was on channel 5 twice in 6 weeks a couple of years ago.

Cressida Breem (neruokruokruokne?), Saturday, 24 September 2005 18:21 (twenty years ago)

that film "Hanover street" with Lesley Anne Downe and Harrison Ford that was on today.

jed_ (jed), Saturday, 24 September 2005 18:39 (twenty years ago)

American Psycho, Glengarry Glenross (have stayed up watching this a few hundred times), bad 80s soft porn/crime flicks with Demi Moore or Demi Moorealikes (how many are there, who knows, who cares)

Crash, absolutely. Pretty Woman also.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 24 September 2005 18:44 (twenty years ago)

predator was on ITV2 again last night. it was only on a couple of months ago, i remember watching it whilst getting drunk and assembling flatpack furniture.

alcohol+flatpack+arnie="i ain't got time to bleed..."

angle of dateh (angle of dateh), Sunday, 25 September 2005 08:43 (twenty years ago)

Don't forget "Die Hard", "Se7en" (see I even know the attempt to be pseudo-cool with number in the title, as have seen it in the TV guide that many times), "Forrest Gump" and "Ghost"

salexander (salexander), Sunday, 25 September 2005 09:02 (twenty years ago)

Steel fucking Magnolias.

Penelope_111 (Penelope_111), Sunday, 25 September 2005 09:05 (twenty years ago)

hahaha, having just said that The Shawshank Redemption isn't on that often on UK terrestrial telly, guess what's on next Saturday night?

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 25 September 2005 09:11 (twenty years ago)

Grease is on at Christmas every single year.

dmun drive-in (dmun), Sunday, 25 September 2005 11:44 (twenty years ago)

I can't say what's on UK TV, but this bothers me a LOT on american TV -- and these movies aren't just played twice in six months, some of these are played THREE TIMES A WEEK:

Ever After (GUH)
The Breakfast Club
16 Candles
Pretty In Pink
She's All That
Shallow Hal
When Harry Met Sally
Predator 2
The Shining

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Sunday, 25 September 2005 13:41 (twenty years ago)

koogs (koogs), Sunday, 25 September 2005 17:29 (twenty years ago)

big

that film where the tough italian-american guy moves in with a gay guy.

rio natsume, Sunday, 25 September 2005 17:35 (twenty years ago)

'sliding doors'

N_RQ, Monday, 26 September 2005 07:31 (twenty years ago)

The Wicker Man is on ITV after midnight at least once a year.

I first saw it at the age of about 15: in the pre-vcr & certainly pre-internet days, you could watch something like this, know nothing about it, not know anyone else who had seen it.

bham, Monday, 26 September 2005 08:19 (twenty years ago)

"Working Girl" Melanie Griffiths....

"Hey why don't we do Dim Sum?"
RIGHT, and I'll pretend it was my idea and get promotion to the board yeah yeah....

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 26 September 2005 09:40 (twenty years ago)

james bond

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 26 September 2005 09:48 (twenty years ago)

Good call on Capricorn One, Ally. Like the song "Yesterday", 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, someone somewhere is broadcasting that film. Or cover versions of it.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Monday, 26 September 2005 10:22 (twenty years ago)

OJ needs the repeat fees.

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Monday, 26 September 2005 10:36 (twenty years ago)

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 26 September 2005 10:42 (twenty years ago)

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 10 May 2008 21:04 (eighteen years ago)

Under Siege has been on tv at least twice (on ITV and Channel 4) in the past year.

Bocken Social Scene, Sunday, 11 May 2008 22:55 (eighteen years ago)

Shaun of the Dead has been on digital at least 50 times in the past year, I think.

Dom Passantino, Sunday, 11 May 2008 22:57 (eighteen years ago)

'sliding doors'

DG, Sunday, 11 May 2008 22:59 (eighteen years ago)

Frogman Henry, Sunday, 11 May 2008 23:19 (eighteen years ago)

didn't five show terminator 2 every thursday a while back?

DG, Sunday, 11 May 2008 23:20 (eighteen years ago)

i see Forest Gump was on yet again last night.

Die Hard gets one helluva an airing doesn't it.

Ste, Monday, 12 May 2008 08:46 (eighteen years ago)

Shaun of the Dead has been on digital at least 50 times in the past year, I think

More like 500

Tom D., Monday, 12 May 2008 09:03 (eighteen years ago)

I saw THE VIEW FROM THE TOP with Gwyneth Paltrow as air hostess, in Sept 2006 and again, I think, a year later. And I am the only person I know who has ever seen it at all.

the pinefox, Monday, 12 May 2008 09:15 (eighteen years ago)

The Bourne Identity is on ITV2 like every fortnight, it seems.

DavidM, Monday, 12 May 2008 09:24 (eighteen years ago)

The Green Mile seems to pop up a lot at the moment.

Neil S, Monday, 12 May 2008 09:43 (eighteen years ago)

Still nothing compared to "Big Trouble in Little China" era on 5, it must have been on every other day.

Jarlrmai, Monday, 12 May 2008 09:52 (eighteen years ago)

Along with a range of awful Steven Seagal films. What is it with him and Channel 5?

Neil S, Monday, 12 May 2008 09:55 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, and Van Damme

Ste, Monday, 12 May 2008 10:01 (eighteen years ago)

They are always advertised with a "so bad they are good" line as well.

Jarlrmai, Monday, 12 May 2008 10:03 (eighteen years ago)

They should just say "fat greasy buddhist"!

Neil S, Monday, 12 May 2008 10:09 (eighteen years ago)

the next grozart, Monday, 12 May 2008 10:40 (eighteen years ago)

And Tremors.

Alba, Monday, 12 May 2008 10:43 (eighteen years ago)

Love Actually - always on. Always.

Anna, Monday, 12 May 2008 11:58 (eighteen years ago)

C4 and my local PBS station from childhood win with the following films in daytime loop:

A Matter of Life and Death
Blithe Spirit

suzy, Monday, 12 May 2008 12:00 (eighteen years ago)

sleeping with the enemy.

or something, Monday, 12 May 2008 22:54 (eighteen years ago)

In Australia, 'Kindergarten Cop' used to be on every 3 months or so.

James Morrison, Monday, 12 May 2008 23:17 (eighteen years ago)

Jurassic Park seems to be on ITV (or one of its digital sisters) every three months. See also the Back to the Future trilogy.

I saw some of The Jewel of the Nile over the weekend, for what I am almost certain is the third time this year.

Although I must be really bad at keeping up with TV schedules, because there are lots of films mentioned here that I'd watch if they were on, yet I've never seen!
