Aaaaaaah. I'm running out of music on my iPod

After a month in D.C., listening to about three hours of music per day I'm now realising that I'm wearing my music collection out. While i expected to get bored of it eventually, and deliberately put loads of new stuff on it to safeguard against this eventuality before I left, I expected 4000 songs to last a bit longer than this.

While I have brought many CDs with me that I haven't uploaded I have nothing to play them on.

I'm 3556 miles away from my PC and therefore am not going to be able to update the pod for three months. I'm starting to get concerned.

I'm wondering if a 'Net cafe wouldn't allow you - for a small fee - to install iTunes (it is free) on one of their machines, and allow you to rip your new CDs to your iPod from there. Couldn't hurt to ask.

Wouldn't you have to reformat the iPod?

:-( Could you get your ipod hooked onto someone's comp? That way we can send you MP3s via gmail!

xpost:

You shouldn't have to, not with a Mini. The preferences in iTunes should allow you to add music to the 'Pod without messing anything up.

You can listen to the songs more than once too.

It is time to reformat your brain. This is much simpler than it sounds. You only need to listen to "Sugar, Sugar" by The Archies and voila!

To address your comments:

1. I have access to a friend's computer if I need it and therefore, in theory, could put new stuff on that way. But wouldn't that wipe everything I have at the moment, or is there a program one can download to bypass that irritating itunes function? It's not a mini if that makes any difference.

2. "You can listen to the songs more than once too." Genius advice. Out of the aforementioned 4000 I have, at any given time, I reckon about 1000 that I might feel like listening to. It's easier to overkill that many songs than one would imagine.

3. "A new hobby". Very daft suggestion. Listening to music obviously not a hobby.

4. "Reformat your brain". Tragically I do have, along with a lot more crap, that very choon. I'm not sure I'm prepared to put myself through that kind of torture though.

Quite tempted to use this as an excuse to buy myself a PSP. Suspect my work may suffer however as I inevitably give up my life to concentrate on GTA:Liberty City.

As I said upthread, you should be able to turn off iPod Syncing in the iTunes Preferences, which will allow you to add new material to your existing library.

In iTunes, go to Edit->Preferences, then click the iPod tab and turn off the automatic updating. Click the Manual Update spot, not the middle one for automatically updating only particular playlists. Don't plug your iPod in until after you've installed and changed these settings in iTunes, and you should be good to go.

That's what I was trying to say - good on you Jaq for a better description! I am stooooooopidly hung over right now.

It would be cool for a group of friends to get together and buy a Shuffle or a Nano and do a round-robin thing. First person fills it and sends it to #2, who replaces some or all of it and sends it to #3, etc. An editable mix tape crossed with Chinese Whispers.
