You look at the six films Crowe directed and go, 'eh?':

Elizabethtown (2005)
Vanilla Sky (2001)
Almost Famous (2000)
Jerry Maguire (1996)
Singles (1992)
Say Anything... (1989)

The only one there I'll give any credit for is Say Anything and even then that's more Cusack's performance. In a weird way, is that film the proto-emo movie of its time?

I hate Say Anything with a passion, but I'll give Almost Famous some love and Singles is amusingly quaint. Elizabethtown just looks like an even-shittier Garden State, if possible. But maybe Kirsten Dunst can save it.

Heath Ledger's accent totally ruins the Bareback Mountain trailer for me. Putting marbles under your lip and mumbling does not a 'western' accent make.

Ledger's getting all the good reviews, though; see Owen Gleiberman's Toronto wrapup in last week's EW.

I was shocked when my film critic friend at the Ft Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel told me on Thursday that it was the best film of the year "by a huge margin." I mean, I want to like it too; the story upon which it's based is a minor masterpiece.

Maybe the trailer doesn't put it in the best light, I've been deceived before.
