Are you a north american citizen, BTW? If not, you can always look into many of the passes that are set up by airlines in the US to encourage foriegn travel to smaller locations. OneWorld (which has Delta and Northwest and several other airlines) features such a pass.

If you don't particularly care when you leave either location, you can always try priceline.com. At least then you'll show up to the airport with exact times and be able to work on your trip planning from there. www.biddingfortravel.com can give you a host of tips. And if you're booking a hotel, you DEFINITELY want to try out Priceline. I grabbed the Holiday Inn Bloomington when I went to Minneapolis about 2 weeks ago for only $43 a night, when the price on their website was closer to $85. I've been able to grab up a host of downtown 4-stars real cheap with it (if you're gonna be staying in downtown, people on biddingfortravel seem to be having luck getting the Marriott Marquis and Omni for about $55-60 a night).
