I suppose I asked for it

I've just been told that my current work contract terminates at the end of this week and is not to be renewed. This is nothing to do with my performance at work but to do with general financial cutbacks. I'm not particularly optimistic about finding something else in the current NHS climate but my agencies have promised to do their best.

I suppose it's all kismet and karma and schadenfreude, etc., but last time I was here it was the best part of a month before I found something else, and the situation in 2002 was much healthier, work-wise.

My mind was kind of halfway made up about selling up and going to live a new life elsewhere, but this may well complete the process and force my hand in the matter.

What do you think? Is this now the time for me to "cut the thread and leave it all behind"?

Where are you thinking of going?

Don't know enough about either i) the job market or ii) yr financial situation to offer any specific advice, sorry!

I want to go to Canada but this is far too short notice for something like this which needs long-term planning, in terms of finding suitable work there, getting the appropriate visas through, etc. It would take years 'cos seemingly everyone wants to emigrate to Canada these days.

I wish this damn book was out, published. If it had been and there was any chance of salvaging anything from it career-wise, it would have been something to fall back on.

I'm not sure 'leaving it all behind' is quite the drastic choice you need here (nor I suspect you really want). but this, admittedly not pleasant, job situation that you have been put in does provide you with the chance to give something new to try.
I say do it, but don't expect life altering events just maybe a bit of variety to keep your mind busy on other things.

It really feels like one of those moments where, if I don't take drastic action now, I'll spend the next 20 years regretting it. In reality I probably will find something else to do in the NHS as of next week. I would simply prefer not to, to say "enough" and go and do something else full-time. Trouble is, after 20 years, I'm not sure I'm employable to do anything else.

End of the week? That's slightly short notice, isn't it?

Getting a temporary work permit for Canada is quicker and easier than emigrating. You can start sorting out all the em/imm-igration stuff while you're there, if you decide you want to stay.

Whether you should actually go through with it or not I can't really say, except to say that I love Canada and wish I'd gone through with my intentions to emigrate there 10 years ago.

(FP xpost)

Our Trust's "management panel" had an emergency meeting at lunchtime regarding saving money. I am not the only casualty of their deliberations.

Getting into Canada can sometimes be a complete pain in the ass if you're not a refugee!

If you can do it tho I’m sure you’d be a welcome addition to the Canadian ilx posse.

I’m now off to the other current job-losing thread to give some terrible advice!

Would it be possible to start looking for a job NOW (in Canada)? I would start as soon as possible. Do you have enough money saved if things go *wrong*? Otherwise I'd look for a (temporary) job here and meanwhile look for one in Canada. Does that make sense?

Yeah, I'd say "Go for it!" in a "not the Stiff Little Fingers album" way.

Canada has a posse?

you should come to work here in our trust, i think we have a redundancy protection scheme where they'll slot you into another job! (not that that's always ideal, but you're supposed to get a first look-in with jobs) i thought it may have been an NHS wide thing but i guess not!

what is your actual role anyway? i'll have a look round here.

Marcello, could you go to Canada for a short-term (6 month or so) university course? People in Canada on study visas are allowed part-time work. This could give you a break from the work you've been doing, give you new skills/credentials for different (or related) work, time to evaluate whether Canada is where you want to be, etc.

A friend of mine took a year and went to folk high school in Sweden, which worked out well for him - gave him a break from Real Life and helped him decided he didn't really want to live there permanently.
