My twice-a-decade computer shopping routine always reminds me that I'm far less savvy about this stuff than I imagine -- and I don't imagine much. The good news is that personal computer power stretched beyond my usage a few years ago: the most involved work I do is music stuff, and even my crapped-out circa-99 PC rarely gets stretched to its limits.
It's old, though, and a little janky, and definitely lagging. So I'm getting a laptop. I'm fairly content to spend around $1000 for a middle-of-the-road PC, especially when even today's cheapo stuff pretty much doubles the processing speed and memory I'm currently working with. (And even that $1000 is taking into account a good sound card.) So: who wants to point me to good sources for customizing and ordering a package? Any elements you'd recommend paying particular attention to? Why not go ahead and just do my shopping for me? I do zero PC gaming and lots of music programming/recording, and I am a total cheapskate.
