Computer Shopping Thread

My twice-a-decade computer shopping routine always reminds me that I'm far less savvy about this stuff than I imagine -- and I don't imagine much. The good news is that personal computer power stretched beyond my usage a few years ago: the most involved work I do is music stuff, and even my crapped-out circa-99 PC rarely gets stretched to its limits.

It's old, though, and a little janky, and definitely lagging. So I'm getting a laptop. I'm fairly content to spend around $1000 for a middle-of-the-road PC, especially when even today's cheapo stuff pretty much doubles the processing speed and memory I'm currently working with. (And even that $1000 is taking into account a good sound card.) So: who wants to point me to good sources for customizing and ordering a package? Any elements you'd recommend paying particular attention to? Why not go ahead and just do my shopping for me? I do zero PC gaming and lots of music programming/recording, and I am a total cheapskate.

Right now a few Acers (like around Travelmate 4000 series) are looking nice, though I have no idea which source for ordering a custom notebook package would be most reliable.

nine months pass...
OK, I have a couple-years-old thinkpad running XP Pro and I finally checked the specs, it only has 128mb ram, this might account for how annoyingly slow it is. I'd simply assumed it was at least 256 all along. oops

Should I spend about $100 to upgrade to 512mb and it should run OK after that (I want to install IIS and try doing some web programming) or should I just start looking for an relatively inexpensive new desktop pc & start fresh, dell has some OK deals including a flat screen monitor which would be pretty sweet.

two years pass...

I have about £400 to spend on a laptop so I can stop dragging my desktop PC around to DJ gigs. It's not a lot, but I'm figuring I should be able to get a good deal from somewhere. It doesn't have to have an awful lot of HD but RAM and processing power is fairly important. I'll probably need a good soundcard, but I figure I might just get an outboard one anyway. It just needs to be reliable and not mess up when I'm running music software such as Acid Pro, and hopefully Ableton, Reason and Nuendo in the future as well (though not necessarily at the same time).

Obv the reason I'm posting up here is I have no clue about buying a computer laptop whatsoever, but if anyone can recommend any good deals or models then please let me know ta!
