Today, at the university, I saw a girl wearing a Nirvana T-shirt over a purple sweater.

Though I've always hated the said band, I thought it was kinda cute.

Stylistic anomalies: hot or not?

Tuomas hating Nirvana. A strange but exotic anomaly.

nathalie, a bum like you (stevie nixed), Thursday, 13 October 2005 08:25 (twenty years ago)

i thought this was going to be one of those "omg it's 1991 all over again, how did that happen?" threads.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 13 October 2005 08:37 (twenty years ago)

I thought this was going to be a Googley Asearch thread.

T-shirt over a long-sleeve shirt is one thing, but t-shirt over a sweater? Fashion travesty.

Nirvana t-shirt? Pathetic.

It's reassuring to know that dressing like shit is a global student phenomenon.

Don King of the Mountain (noodle vague), Thursday, 13 October 2005 10:43 (twenty years ago)

As, it would appear, is lionizing suicidal smackheads...

Stone Monkey (Stone Monkey), Thursday, 13 October 2005 10:53 (twenty years ago)

feel the love.

I'm not really sure if it was a sweater, but long sleeves anyway. My point was that this is not something you see often - at least not around the university, maybe on punk girls - and I don't think she was anticipating a nineties revival, so it looked more like she just steadfastly refused to comply how people (especially university students) should look in this time and place. And that was kinda hot. It's not that she'd appeared "alternative"; there are enough of those types around the campus, and the alternatives are almost equally strict on how to dress (though they're less outspoken about it). She was just "outside".

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 13 October 2005 12:05 (twenty years ago)

Finland is weird!

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 13 October 2005 12:55 (twenty years ago)

she's probably on faculty

geoff (gcannon), Thursday, 13 October 2005 13:37 (twenty years ago)

I do find it strange when I see 12 year olds wearing Kurt Cobain tops but then I think of all the people my age (25) wearing Iron Maiden and Manowar tops, it's not that odd.

I saw a 12 or 13 year old kid the other day wearing a Misfits t shirt, and said "I'll give you five bucks if you can tell me what band that's for." He looked at me with the 'oh my god this old person is so stupid' expression on his mug and said, "my GOD, it's not for a BAND, it's just a cool SKULL, OKAY?"

I wanted to push him off his skateboard.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 13 October 2005 15:18 (twenty years ago)

YOU SHOW EM, MOM.

Old School (sexyDancer), Thursday, 13 October 2005 15:24 (twenty years ago)

Q: Tuomas do you have Nightwish [Tarja Turunen] female clones at your university?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 13 October 2005 15:26 (twenty years ago)

You mean clotheswise or appearancewise?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 13 October 2005 15:28 (twenty years ago)

both, but mainly i.e stylewise Nightwish rock chicks

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 13 October 2005 15:32 (twenty years ago)

I'm thinking of getting some Nightwish CDs.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 13 October 2005 15:47 (twenty years ago)

Not much at the university, but the area where I live in is sorta like the unofficial rock district of Helsinki, so I see them a lot there.

That child should be flayed alive.

GIVE EM A LECTURE, DAD.

Old School (sexyDancer), Thursday, 13 October 2005 15:53 (twenty years ago)

I knew you'd understand, Alex.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 13 October 2005 15:54 (twenty years ago)

I had a University of Michigan sweatshirt as a kid, despite the fact that I was 7 and had never been to the US. I feel so ashamed.

Parents wearing club shirts from the generation previous to their own vs. Kids wearing band shirts from the generation previous to their own

my name is john. i reside in chicago. (frankE), Thursday, 13 October 2005 16:04 (twenty years ago)

I had an American football themed sweater as a teen, even though I'd never watched or played the game and didn't even know the rules. I just thought it was cool... What a fool I was.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 13 October 2005 16:04 (twenty years ago)

Out on the road today I saw a Deadhead sticker on a Cadillac.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Thursday, 13 October 2005 16:06 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, the Misfits kid totally deserves a throttling. The other day, I mentioned to a classmate of mine that Run DMC wrote a song about my shoes (Adidas All Stars, shell toes...). He, a 24 year old, looked at me and said "I don't get it." I almost cried.

I get the impression from Tuomas' posts that Finland is a place where "standards of beauty" are enforced very aggressively. Like fines and jail and stuff.

Ha ha, good for him.

One of my Year 12 students today (age 16-17) appeared wearing an EMF T-shirt. Upon further questioning, it had belonged to her brother (age: 30something) and she had no idea it was actually a band. "Uh, I thought it was something to do with his college".

Nirvana T-shirts are commonplace though. I piss them off something rotten when I tell them I saw them four times.

He was probably thinking "It's not a band you idiot, it's from the movie Crimson Ghost."

Parents wearing club shirts from the generation previous to their own

What does this mean?

walter kranz (walterkranz), Thursday, 13 October 2005 23:02 (twenty years ago)

I saw a deer wearing an Amon Duul II t-shirt. I punched him in the face.
