A couple of weeks ago, I was walking across Washington Square Park with some friends, and there was a big concert going on (turns out it was for some Jewish holiday). Anyway, there was a Hasidic Hip Hopper performing -- itself somewhat stupefying -- and I turned to one of my friends and said "it's a veritable LollapaJewsa." The girlfriend of my friend of mine thought that was an anti-semitic comment. I told her to lighten up. She didn't.

i remember hearing sarah michelle gellar on the howard stern show one morning. howard, as you know, likes to "out" people for whatever peculiarity they might have, so he was trying to get smg to confess that she was jewish. she kept denying it, saying "oh, i don't consider myself anything." stern was like "are your parents jewish?" smg: "yeah." stern: "both of them?" smg: "yeah." stern: "then you're jewish."

i think the article is saying that even if the study does contain a kernel of truth (which is for the scientific community to decide), we should consider that the major parts that history and religion play in this as well. it's no mere coincidence that so many jews are "smart," and in fact it may very well be a combination of genetics and historical tradition, but simply isolating the gene and turning it into a wonder drug isn't gonna turn anyone who uses it into albert einstein.
