President Bush praised in poetry -- but there are objections

Not the smartest move. The poem itself:

Patient and steady with all he must bear,
Ready to meet every challenge with care,
Easy in manner, yet solid as steel,
Strong in his faith, refreshingly real.
Isn't afraid to propose what is bold,
Doesn't conform to the usual mould,
Eyes that have foresight, for hindsight won't do,
Never backs down when he sees what is true,
Tells it all straight, and means it all too.
Going forward and knowing he's right,
Even when doubted for why he would fight,
Over and over he makes his case clear,
Reaching to touch the ones who won't hear.
Growing in strength he won't be unnerved,
Ever assuring he'll stand by his word.
Wanting the world to join his firm stand,
Bracing for war, but praying for peace,
Using his power so evil will cease,
So much a leader and worthy of trust,
Here stands a man who will do what he must.

Pupils are to ignore it ahead of a reprint next year.
As opposed to all the other poems the learn in school?

It's clever the way it spells out George Bush like that.

Makes him sound like a super-hero.

His college days, now seem a haze,
Of blow and southern bourbon
And vietnam, o! what a bomb!
No swiftboat was he servin.'

Good argument from removing poetry from curricula entirely. This is what happens when it gets into the wrong hands.

I'm going to go be sick now.

Andy, 'hoan' is not a word.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 5 December 2005 20:42 (twenty years ago)

Hoan was the second socialist mayor of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Did anyone else notice that, in an attempt at following a structural consistency rule that meant rhymes couldn't cross word boundaries in "President George W Bush", the author had to leave the line about Bush wanting to be all-inclusive and togethery so that it didn't actually rhyme with anything?

Genius.

The first ryhme is care bear.

Even when doubted for why he would fight is pretty faithful to Bushian syntax.

This made me spit up all over my co-workers.

Tells it all straight, and means it all too.
Going forward and knowing he's right,
