Stuart Pearce C or D?

I feel the man deserves a thread of his own, with his candid interview style, his sense of humour and his generally eccentric antics 'in the technical area'.

Daniel Giraffe (Daniel Giraffe), Thursday, 16 March 2006 09:15 (twenty years ago)

Classic, obv, for the following reasons:

- starting pro footy at 23, thus having an understanding of the 'real' world beyond any of his contemporaries, let alone his cash-laden charges

- being a proper punk fan and introducing the 90s Pistols reunion gig - ok, not exactly the last word in cool, but it beats Lionel Richie, steak and chips and Only Fools and Horses hands down

- starting at Wealdstone, my (and Daniel's !)then local team, in their glory days of the early to mid 80s

- being unfailingly honest and avoiding football speak

while he isn't dud, unfortunately his media image has a dud-like sheen due to him being unfairly painted as a bit of a caricature - viz: the Mirror's 'Achtung' front page in Euro 96, the Beeb going on about him being potty and eccentric (ergo: not like their anodyne selves).

radcliffe was talking about his new contract negotiations the other day:

Good point about SP's avoidance of 'footballspeak', Darren. He just doesn't come out with platitudes.

He's such a child of Brian Clough. His matter of fact interview style (no matter how bizarre the utterance), and the way his players don't backchat the ref, to name just a couple of examples of the top of my head.

Daniel Giraffe (Daniel Giraffe), Thursday, 16 March 2006 10:14 (twenty years ago)

I didn't know he started at Wealdstone. I remember that ground, my Dad's family lived in Harrow Weald until early 90s.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 16 March 2006 10:47 (twenty years ago)

Lower Mead is now a Tesco, I think.

Daniel Giraffe (Daniel Giraffe), Thursday, 16 March 2006 10:55 (twenty years ago)

I think a lot of his down-to-earthness comes from the fact that he still worked full-time as an electrician until he was in his 20s. He's not one of those players who had a sheltered childhood in some Premiership acadamy, and knows that playing football for a living is an amazing honour.

Plus, he's so hard that a dustbin lorry landed on his car and he WALKED AWAY.

So classic, then,

(Note that Theo Walcott turned 17 today and instantly saw his wages shoot up to £2,000 a week....)

I was going to start this thread the other week! Classic, obviously.

Absolute classic: nickname of Psycho must be good and then he has no fear: missed a penalty at one World Cup and the next time the chance came to take one he hit it so hard it broke the netting in the goal (not really, but you know what I mean).

andyjack (andyjack), Thursday, 16 March 2006 16:54 (twenty years ago)

Classic. Next England manager. If not, USA should hire him to replace Bruce Arena. Perhaps Brazil or Uruguay too.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Thursday, 16 March 2006 16:56 (twenty years ago)

i read an (unintentionally) hilarious piece about pearce today, written by that chubby waistcoat-wearing fool pat dolan. non-irish ilxors be warned, dolan is an irish league manager who somehow managed to become setanta sports' chief premiership pundit, and also managed to wangle himself a column in the irish daily star. he's rather fond of indulging in hilariously ott "vitriol" on issues of no great importance, for no good reason other than that he wants people to call him the "straight-talking" pat dolan.

for some reason this piece gave me a fit of the giggles. edited highlights:

"He was never a world-class player. But by god when it comes to playing the British red tops, he is world class."

"(His friends in the media) are like his minders. They would have you believe that he is the leader of the moral crusade of British football. This is a bluff!"

"The contract also allows him to join any other club with no compensation. It really means that if a better job comes along, then Mr.Goody Two-Shoes will be off to a bigger or better club, with the Man City fans scratching their heads, and the club left in the lurch."

"It's amazing what you have to do these days to be a hero. Stuart Pearce has sold out."

"Good old Stuart Pearce - what you see is what you get blah, blah, blah."

"Let me tell you - he's no hero of mine. I hate hypocrisy. Stuart Pearce has sold out to the media - he has sold out at the expense of his own players"

"I would have to agree with his missus - he has messed up. He may be the accaptable face of the new celebrity age of football, but he is not a hero - he is just a guy trying to survive. Mark my words, the people who have seduced him into being somebody he's not would make Brian Clough a very disappointed man."

erm...ok...

Classic for the celebrations when he scored his penalty against Spain and got the six-year-failure-monkey off his back. (This monkey of which I speak is a metaphorical one)

Tehrannosaurus HoBB (the pirate king), Monday, 20 March 2006 22:14 (twenty years ago)

He was one of my favourite players ever, and I'm enjoying him as a manager, since his very first game. I'm surprised no one has mentioned it: he talked of agonising all night, and finally getting his team down, and telling his wife. She took one look at it and said "Aren't you going to have a goalkeeper?" The thing I love is that he TOLD the nation this.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 20 March 2006 22:39 (twenty years ago)

I like the way occasionally when City score it flicks to the touchline and Pearce has a fan in a headlock and is celebrating wildly. (well, not quite, but he will stare a few fans in the face and cheer crazily as if he was at the game with them)

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 09:12 (twenty years ago)

He speaks of defeat with objective clarity. I liked him as a player. Hammer of the year in his late thirties!

Watching Pearce and Pardew dance around their technical areas last night is somewhat more interesting than shots of an unshaven Portuguese man in a scarf.

his players are all on the treatment table

Barton was missing, but who else?

Konal Doddz (blueski), Sunday, 2 April 2006 17:17 (twenty years ago)

City have been missing a lot of first choice players recently but yesterday's performance, according to Pearce, was absymal.

It was an extraordinary tirade yesterday: http://www.manchesteronline.co.uk/men/sport/football/s/209/209692_pearce_blasts_players.html

Today, he's a bit calmer, but still seething: http://www.manchesteronline.co.uk/sport/football/manchestercity/s/209/209734_stu_we_must_learn_our_lesson.html

psychotastic!

Daniel Giraffe (Daniel Giraffe), Monday, 3 April 2006 11:31 (twenty years ago)

Barton was missing, but who else?

surely that's enough.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 3 April 2006 11:40 (twenty years ago)

Funny though, not heard O'Leary act so wretched (the bit about being unable to look his wife and kids in the eye tonight seemed rather OTT) and apologetic.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Monday, 3 April 2006 11:43 (twenty years ago)

"It was unacceptable and if it happens again, there will be people leaving this club."

when i first read that i thought he meant he would be leaving (for england job or sommat)

ken c (ken c), Monday, 3 April 2006 11:43 (twenty years ago)

Someone should make a drama documentary about the O'Leary household.

Isn't this a line from a song by UB40?
