Getting mad at people you don't know over the internet: C/D?

I feel like an ass when I have to defend myself over the internet, generally because I fear that I won't be taken seriously and that my intelligence will be underestimated. People seem to lack the sense that they're talking to an actual human being when they're on the internet. Is it bad that I take insults/attacks from complete strangers personally? (nb I already have trouble arguing with people in person because I have a stuttering problem, but at least I realize that I'm not going to be judged as stupid/just another clueless internet kid)

This is probably why I don't post on ILX as often as I do. Besides being completely clueless about everything you people talk about.

I am really sorry. To be serious, I do know exactly what you mean, and am only posting because I can't sleep and have been drinking. I fear the scary faceless people of the internet.

I saw your post from a mile away!

wait, that didn't make as much sense as I thought it would. I think I need to run away from ILX forever.

Okay, I still sound flippant. Yes, I have a problem with it, in part because if you do get into a heated argument, people who spend half their lives on the internet will say something like "Oh, man, I can't believe you're getting upset about something ON THE INTERNET, that's sooo pathetic". But, you know, things do affect you - written as much as face to face, and when you can't tell how seriously the other person is taking the discussion that can heighten the tension.

Kind of x-post. Does it make sense? I am not sure.

I have the same problem, a little bit. I have a problem with wanting people on the internet to like me. Yet in real life I don't give a shit, usually. Pretty dumb.

I totally know where you're coming from, and I think a lot of the problem stems from the fact that you don't get any of those non-verbal indicators denoting irony, and whether what someone is saying is their final argument or whether they're just thinking out loud and suchlike. Sometimes it does seem like you're not interacting with real people, but with artificial intellegences whose arguments are programmed to be much better than yours. Yet still you care what they think. Weird.

That sould be "yet still ONE cares what they think." I wasn't calling anyone else weird without including myself in there.

Hating burns up the hater. Obviously, it is done in ignorance because nobody intentionally hurts themselves. So, fuck it. Who cares?

My saying: What other people think of me is none of my business.

Go with the flow, keep it light, don't worry about the past or the future.

(Also notice it is the "tough guys" who demonstrate the most concern over stuff they "don't care about." Help them out. Drive them nuts.)
