Do you think I could get work in web development/IT/computer graphics or do you think it's too much of an introduction?
Your opinions please.
Also - is there some sort of certification course you can take to work in IT - LIke SUn Microsystems or something?

I miss categories. . .
Who here has a computer science degree? Was it worthwhile for you? I'm bored and ready to go back to school. We get some free classes here (work at a university) so I'm thinking of giving CS a try. Tell me your tales please.

I just finished my first year towards my comp sci degree and I hate coding with a passion (I'm interning and that's all I do ;_;). But the abstract, non-coding side of computer science fascinates me. So I'm gonna stick with it a little longer to see if I can somehow not be doomed to a career typing shit code that even I don't understand.

don't go into it unless you love it

sorry, thought this was the "how many sex partners have you got now?" thread

still applies
Does this apply to every degree or just CS? I'm just giving this shit a try because I have no idea what I want to do with my life.

I've doing web development/design for about 10 years now and have come to enjoy the programming bits (basic web scripting) for than the design part. I had 6 mths training in a mainframe language and enjoyed that too. I'm not in a huge rush to get a degree and don't want to waste my free classes. So this is kind of an exploratory thing. I can't think of anything else I'd like to do right now (school-wise).

Well that depends. . .did you do well Curtis?

I have a computer science degree. It was worth it, but university was more worth it for four years of getting time to think, than the coursework per se. That said, computer science degrees vary vastly, from at one end, training in programming (practical) to the other end computational complexity theory and calculus of communicating systems (theoretical), so it's not just one thing. Happy to post more later, but got to head out now...

mostly I try to dissuade people from going into CS if they're doing it because "I heard you can make a lot of money in IT". it's a tough field and if you're not passionate about it why undergo the headaches?
and why is it a tough field? constantly changing, users/business people have unrealistic expectations of it, half the people in it pretend to know more than they actually do, lack of standards (and I don't mean certifications, the field is silly with them), market forces are pushing development overseas.
I'll grant that it is a big enough field that you might stumble into the niche you like.

I got a 4.0 my first year at GA Tech (thank you Calc III grading curve). I don't want to do Poli Sci really.

check out the big brain on curt1s!
if you've got the aptitude and you're not sure what else to do then I guess you're as good there as anywhere else...

I just plan to become a cat lady, or heavyweight champion

But basically I can't do coding. I feel dyslexic whenever I look back at my own code.
