This is perhaps a naive question, but: how many people here

1) have been romantically involved with somebody who they later felt had been gouging them for money - who would not have been romantically involved with them if it hadn't been for the money perks - or
2) has been the person gouging?

I ask because I thought for a moment about how common the image is of the gold-digging partner (always female, I think) in pop music, and then I thought "who's ever gouged me for my money? nobody, really" except for one woman, who was a junkie, which isn't really the stereotypical gold-diggin' profile

(I also ask, perhaps obviously, because I feel like the whole gold-digger stereotype is probably defensive sexist bullshit, but it could also be that I've just been lucky)

My girlfriend makes more than me and took 2 years to pay me back $2000. In that time, I spent $4000 on unexpected bills. Funny how that works.

Sam I used to be crazy poor! I do ok now & have been married for a six or seven years, but most of my life I was either poor or under-average-income & out there playin' the field. But is your contention that gold diggers only zero on people who don't have any gold? it hardly seems an effective m.o.

It's not always women, though. I've never been a, {cough}, golddigger, but I've occasionally accepted favors from those more fortunate than I, especially if they were only-childs with well-to-do parents. Long Tall Andy, they call me, bitch betta have my buck-three-eighty.

I have a friend who is a bit of a Becky Sharp who has, for the past few days, been ringing me from a posh hotel room in Paris because she has been dumped there by some Silicon Valley billionaire art collector, with nothing but a first-class ticket home. She'd made some sort of deal with herself about this guy, even though she KNEW he was a dick. I really, really hope she has learned her lesson.

Thomas, I was saying that I would think any gold digger worth his or her salt would only be going after Mr or Ms Big Bucks. "Users" can find suckers in any tax bracket but I think a pro would hunt bigger game.
