I caught the last second or two of the trailer the other day on TV, but just mustered up the courage to watch this a minute ago:

http://www.apple.com/trailers/lions_gate/larrythecableguyhealthinspector/large.html

I'm at a loss to decide which is a more depressing inclusion to the cast, Biff from Back to the Future or Buster from Arrested Development. I'll go with Biff.

Fart jokes! Rednecks! Stereotypes! Git ready to git r done!

I mean, maybe Seattle has just become so 'bear' dominated as far as influx goes to Capitol Hill/Hipsterville or something that my sexuality radar's all messed up, but if you were to plop some mid-aged guy in bright sleeveless flannel and a very insecure hypermasculine demeanor (judging from the photo above) in between Pike and Pine, he'd be cruised and double-fucked in 5 nanoseconds.

Yoo Doo Nut (donut), Sunday, 19 March 2006 08:01 (twenty years ago)

Tiki Theater Xymposium (Bent Over at the Arclight), Sunday, 19 March 2006 23:08 (twenty years ago)

so, in partial response to account settings' post upthread, i'm forced to consider if the title "Larry the Cable Guy: Health Inspector" is supposed to indicate that he has the dual title of cable guy AND health inspector in this film or what. will he be fixing cable along with being a health inspector? does this add another layer of complexity to the film that i hadn't considered before? will he be grappling with the decision to choose between both jobs? peel the onion, people. PEEL IT.

Finally... a Yahoo Serious for Mississippi.

darin (darin), Monday, 20 March 2006 08:20 (twenty years ago)

except he went to an elite prep school in nebraska

anthony easton (anthony), Monday, 20 March 2006 09:20 (twenty years ago)

and his schtick comes from flordia, there may be something interesting, in the working out of political consertavism, and the overlap in the west/midwest/south/fla. b/w certain elements of the culture...

the cross letter makes a big deal about the differences b/w nebraska and fla--and darin thinks hes from mississippi, which is a whole other beast...

but the interesting thing, is that the whole blue collar thing talks about the urban/rural spilt but refuses the formerly iron bound baggage of american geography...

the movie will not be to ilxs taste, but i think mr the cable guy, is a really interesting political figure

anthony easton (anthony), Monday, 20 March 2006 09:23 (twenty years ago)

im surprised my brother hasnt answered yet,hes a huge "blue collar tour" fan and will back up claims of unfunny vs funny re:rural humor vs snarky new york/l.a. humor....but then i love all th ernest movies so whatevs

dan bunnybrain (dan bunnybrain), Monday, 20 March 2006 11:55 (twenty years ago)

You know, I'm not a huge David Cross fan ("Ever notice how fucking Christians always go to fucking church? Christ, motherfuckers, YOU'RE ALL FUCKING STUPID.") But this Open Letter to Larry the Cable Guy is hifuckinglarious.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Monday, 27 March 2006 17:45 (twenty years ago)

youd think with all the snotty (sic)s piled across that article to mock larry's stupidity maybe david cross would actually spell 'elitism' right

Yeah that was the first thing I thought when I read that letter too.

Did Larry the Cable Guy's whining really need a ten page, point by point response?

erklie (erklie), Monday, 27 March 2006 18:34 (twenty years ago)

what does git-r-done mean?

the wikipedia page didn't help, nor did watching most of one of his comedy central specials.

also, he's terribly unfunny. ron white, on the other hand, can be occasionally fan-fucking-tastic. i love his delivery.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 27 March 2006 18:36 (twenty years ago)

'get it done', i haven't listened to his act in years but i think its generally but not necessarily used as mock encouragement for just about anything; it was used semi-sincerely at my hs graduation but obv its been appropraited.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v246/ahepola/git_r_done_for_god.jpg

tpf, Monday, 27 March 2006 18:52 (twenty years ago)

ok i actually sort of knew it was the same thing as "get it done" but what i don't get is if that's all it is, why is it funny, or a catchphrase, or... my head hurts.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 27 March 2006 18:56 (twenty years ago)

It's this thing.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 27 March 2006 18:57 (twenty years ago)

true dat

tpf, Monday, 27 March 2006 19:00 (twenty years ago)

the reason you dont get the specific context in which git-r-done is funny is because its funny in every context

+++, Monday, 27 March 2006 19:07 (twenty years ago)

You see it is funny because it is "git 'er done" (sic, git-r-done) which implies lack of patience for finishing a task while sounding down-homey by referring to something as "errr," like it is a woman.

In a sexual context, it's like saying to finish her off so you can go back to sitting on the couch watching television and eating a bucket of lard. Laziness and impatience.

more like blue collar sadface tour (mike h.), Monday, 27 March 2006 19:17 (twenty years ago)

There was some pre-weekend buzz in Hollywood about how this movie was going to pull HUGE opening weekend numbers out of nowhere, since it was targeted at an unrepresented demographic group, a'la "Passion of the Christ" or "Diary of a Mad Black Woman"...
but fortunately it only pulled in about 7 million bucks, coming in at number 6.

t/s: Larry the Cable Guy Health Inspector vs. "pre-weekend buzz in Hollywood"

account settings (account), Monday, 27 March 2006 22:15 (twenty years ago)

Cross has his own failings (including writing "responses" that are a bit too long and anal-retentive), but he's basically right. this dude's schtick is way more patronizing and insulting to southerners than anything Cross's "liberal PC" ass has ever done. Also agree with Sterling about Ron White - I don't really laugh at much of his stuff, but he isn't playing a completely obvious (and boring, and pointless) caricature and he does pull off more of a "loveable asshole" kind of delivery.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 27 March 2006 22:19 (twenty years ago)

"you might be a redneck if" is funnier

Big Willy and the Twins (miloaukerman), Monday, 27 March 2006 22:36 (twenty years ago)

The mind boggles at the idea that anyone would consider hating Muslims or gays to be "un-PC" these days. Yes, what brave stances those are. I salute your courage, Mr. The Cable Guy.

LTCG was on Regis this morning. When you see this Nebraskan doing his character out-of-context, it's horrible.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Monday, 27 March 2006 23:14 (twenty years ago)

Saw him on Leno a few weeks ago waiting for Neko Case to come on. Watching fellow guest Julia Louis-Dreyfus trying to pretend he was funny was just excruciating.

everytime i see 'they call me tater salad' in gas stations i'm so tempted to check it out - 'why do they call him tater salad???' - but never do cuz i don't want to ruin the mystery and i don't feel like spending eight bucks on a ron white dvd. i always read it in my mind as similar to 'they call me mr. tibbs'.

j blount (papa la bas), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 02:01 (twenty years ago)

more likely "They call Me Mr. Pibb"

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 02:02 (twenty years ago)

Substituting some terms, the above means Larry King = (Harpo X Chico)/Bill's Love Life.

Cheap puns! You want em' I got 'em.

his tater salad gag is so worth it. also his vegitarian gag and most of his wife jokes.

haven't heard a single particularly racist, anti-immigrant, or anti-gay thing out of his mouth and he actually has a few signature gags against homophobia. his death penalty stuff was pretty irritating tho and all his stuff on how california cops aren't as badass as texas cops, etc. the irritating part was also that they were pretty good gags.

still his newest special dragged a bit -- like he was trying too hard to please.

It's a shame he wasn't on the Blue Collar TV show. It might have actually been funny. The Blue Collar Comedy Tour record is a curiousity -- there's Goober, Goofus, Gross-Out, and then this guy, who bits a lot from Bill Hicks without biting any of his material.
