April 21st, 2006! I looked for a picture of Pyramid Head and I couldn't find one. :( Directed by Christophe Gans, of Brotherhood of the Wolf infamy.

This game used to scare the pants off of me.

It looks like a game still!

Peter Densmore (pbnmyj), Sunday, 19 March 2006 07:22 (twenty years ago)

we saw the preview before "v for vendetta". yes, the monsters in this move EXACTLY like from the game.

DON'T TALK LIKE THAT'S A BAD THING.

Jessie the Monster (scarymonsterrr), Sunday, 19 March 2006 07:37 (twenty years ago)

this is gonna be great if done right

i wonder if it'll have the sufficient level of pyramid head rape.

also, we've already been yakking about this flick in ILG.

the preview made it look sort of lame

well now it is on the big kids' board too.

yes. it's so cute that you've tried to keep up.

I loved 'Brotherhood of the Wolf', and it's actually quite a downer that Gans has been working on yet another video game adaptation. Is there the faintest chance of this turning out well? Of course not.

But I suppose I'm asking him to stay in France and churn out interminable goth costume dramas that don't export well.

well?

assorted thoughts/impressions:

this movie is really weird. as a story its not very good and somewhat nonsensical...but its beautiful to look at. there are scenes in this movie which capture EXACTLY the look and feel the game. the sound/music design is directly from the game, too. makes the scarier scenes very intense and effective with a nice loud theater sound system. first half is better than the second, the ending is left 'ambiguous' in a kind of forced way. good makeup/creature f/x, and the CGI here actually add to the surreal atmosphere of a film for once.

I was into the trailer but when this wasn't screened for critics I gave up hope

glad to hear a semi-positive review but I think this still spells "rental"

Renard (Renard), Saturday, 22 April 2006 04:52 (twenty years ago)

i dunno, i think its actually best seen in a theater. i think all of its virtues (the visuals/the sound, etc.) will be lost on video.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Saturday, 22 April 2006 04:57 (twenty years ago)

unless you have a really home theater system

latebloomer (latebloomer), Saturday, 22 April 2006 04:58 (twenty years ago)

*nice home theater system i mean

latebloomer (latebloomer), Saturday, 22 April 2006 04:59 (twenty years ago)

ooh i almost forgot:

right as i was standing in line for my ticket a huge lightning bolt struck outside the theater, followed by the loudest thunder clap i've ever heard. everybody standing outside (myself included) jumped up and screamed, it was great! then as i was buying a drink and some nachos the power went out. it was so WTF and scary but totally set the atmosphere for going into a horror flick.

(the power came back on a second later)

I had a job editing together stuff from this game for a whiny emo rock video. Watching it over and over made me want to see this movie but never want to hear that music ever again.

the scary parts of this are actually pretty fucking terrifying. the "oh shit, americans need conflict and resolution" bullshit they tacked on was a bit weak and the characters aren't established much past "blonde mom, ineffectual dad, weird kid - GO!" but once that siren came on...

i'm kind of sad that alice krige is getting too old to play hot-evil and is now heading towards crazy-old-lady-evil.

also, extra points for not using pyramid head as either a recurring bludgeon or a jason/freddy/pinhead type. my girlfriend said she was just glad he didn't pull off his helmet at the end and say, "i suppose you all wonder why i've brought you here today!" whilst twirling a monocle.

I really liked this film in retrospect. Only really had a quick go on the game though.

I watched it again last night. It's really good!

I thought this movie was great for what it was; a scary movie with minimal plot based on a videogame. I do have to say kudos to the writers for killing off characters I assumed were unkillable!

HI DERE, Friday, 9 March 2007 13:14 (nineteen years ago)

I enjoyed this, one of the few movies i've kept on my hard drive. The ending was perfect in keeping with the style of the original game
