It's a sign of how rough I feel this afternoon that I thought "they'll be able to connect searches with users, that's bad!" before realising that Google doesn't have users as such - it's not like you have to log on.

A federal judge has ordered internet search engine Google to turn over some search data, including 50,000 web addresses, to the US government.

However, Judge James Ware denied a request that Google hand over a list of people's search requests.

The Justice Department had wanted access to search records to help prevent access to online pornography.

The judge said privacy considerations led him to deny part of the department's request.

Andrew: they have a google cookie, which they tie to your browser. And since you use gmail, they can tell which computer is yours. Also personalized search keeps a complete history of everything you search for while signed in to Gmail, unless you turn it off.
