cozen (Cozen), Monday, 20 March 2006 21:28 (twenty years ago)

!

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Monday, 20 March 2006 22:15 (twenty years ago)

tell me about it

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 20 March 2006 22:16 (twenty years ago)

zizek was kind've entertaining on a nutso euro academic level - esp. funny footage of him fumbling through a recreation of the boat trip from hitchcock's the birds - but the actual content of his prog was a) somewhat ...diffuse and b) not exactly revealatory (ie he offered up some pretty trad/Freudian interps of classical Hollywood cinema - socophilia, polymorphous peversity etc. - i mean, the 'insight' that the three levels of the Bates house in Psycho represent the Id/Ego/SuperEgo etc. dates back at least as far as Robin Wood's 60s book on Hitch, and I'm sure old Ray Durgnant mined similar ground) - I was chiefly struck by how OLD most of zizek's film examples were (apart from YAWN the Matrix, i can't think of a film that's LESS in need of explanation)

However the Jake Chapman docu in the same series was SUPERB - tremendous footage of a Herman Nitsch ritual and another piss-shitting Aktionist whose name I missed, plus I finally got to see Chris Burden getting shot in the arm (he reacts like he's been stung by a bee!)

Ward Fowler (Ward Fowler), Monday, 20 March 2006 22:51 (twenty years ago)

a) somewhat ...diffuse and b) not exactly revealatory

= ZIZEK IN A NUTSHELL

Yawn (Wintermute), Monday, 20 March 2006 22:53 (twenty years ago)

since it was on ch4 this is bound to be repeated at least 10 x over their various channels.

jed_ (jed), Monday, 20 March 2006 23:40 (twenty years ago)

el slavo sez that the great thing about dvds is that once you own them you don't have to actually watch them. so i taped this.

the missus is reading his book on (loose use of 'on' there) kieslowski, and she says that he's very good, but why oh why does he keep returning to lacan.

mad props to man like ward fowler for bringing up durgnat: it's always struck me as odd that that RD's 'WR - mysteries' book (which btw is the best book ever) has a cover quote from zizek, cos durgnat wasn't exactly a lacanian. but otoh they do have a lot in common, and sail over most academic film theory.

Real Goths Don't Wear Black (Enrique), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 09:35 (twenty years ago)

another piss-shitting Aktionist whose name I missed

That'll be Gunther Brus then, Nitsch handled the blood and guts end of things, he had the piss and shit franchise

Dadaismus the Blind (of Alexandria) (Dada), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 11:27 (twenty years ago)

Otto Muehl, of course, dabbled in piss and shit but added sex to the mix

Dadaismus the Blind (of Alexandria) (Dada), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 11:29 (twenty years ago)

so... no torrents

: ?

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 21:49 (twenty years ago)

Oh, I got it from bittorrent, at UKNova. I'll burn it onto a CD and give it to you on Saturday, if you're coming.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 23:02 (twenty years ago)

Torrent can be found on this site. Lucky that they opened up applications to the public again, snatch one up quick.

Jena (JenaP), Thursday, 23 March 2006 04:53 (twenty years ago)

oh, does your offer still stand, alba?

cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 19:56 (twenty years ago)

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 20:10 (twenty years ago)

electric sound of jim [and why not] (electricsound), Monday, 3 July 2006 23:30 (nineteen years ago)

This was pretty much ass.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 00:11 (nineteen years ago)

Which is to say, Ward Fowler above pretty much OTM.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 00:12 (nineteen years ago)

Watched a bit of this earlier, and he's not the most natural presenter, is he? Not much substance that I could detect either, the highest level of insight I saw was when he pointed out that Chaplin was supposed to be Hitler in The Great Dictator. Turned over to a thing about black people in 18th C Britain, which had Simon Schama as a talking head and was quite interesting.

chap who would dare to start Raaatpackin (chap), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 01:44 (nineteen years ago)

i taped this. but the funny thing is, i also taped it in march. i taped it twice.

Roughage Crew (Enrique), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 07:27 (nineteen years ago)

taped twice watched none?

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 17:51 (nineteen years ago)

It's available on YouTube if you search for Zizek (or the title, whatever).

why oh why does he keep returning to lacan.

Uh, dude, cause he's from the Lacan school. Duh! That said, didn't the Lacan school/Miller (son in law?) sort of throw him out? Or didn't Miller refuse to publish his writings? Anyhow, he's great though. I love him because for years I didn't understand (nor want to understand) Lacan. Now, via Zizek, I'm getting into Lacan (and Freud) again.

- I was chiefly struck by how OLD most of zizek's film examples were (apart from YAWN the Matrix, i can't think of a film that's LESS in need of explanation

I'm only in the first half of Looking Awry and already stumbled upon some *newish* films. Well, Desperately Seeking Susan. That's actually old but not so old, right?

Whatever. I like his writings.

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 18:05 (nineteen years ago)

I think this on on TONIGHT on some channel or other. I just did a flick through and was attracted to the word "pervert" in the title of something coming up "NEXT".

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 19:38 (nineteen years ago)

it was on MONDAY.

i still haven't bothered to watch it.

nathalie, i don't think him being from the lacan school lets him off the hook here, quite the opposite! why is he a lacanian?

Roughage Crew (Enrique), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 08:18 (nineteen years ago)

It was last night too. I thought hwat little bit I saw was interesting, but the bit about The Paino Teacher depressed me greatly.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 10:34 (nineteen years ago)

oh shit they went ahead and have done the threatened three-parter? bugger it i meant to watch them all...

Roughage Crew (Enrique), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 10:41 (nineteen years ago)

Maybe it was a repeat? Eyes Wide Shut? That Bergman film with the broken glass? I only saw about five minutes.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 10:45 (nineteen years ago)

strangely enough, i keep reading this thread title as "ASSCOCK: pervert's guide..."

teh_kit has 22 friends (g-kit), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 10:57 (nineteen years ago)

nah it was def part 2, and there's part 3 tonight. sod it.

Roughage Crew (Enrique), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 11:12 (nineteen years ago)

Is there no way to find the 3 parts in full. YouTube only have them in small short film cuts. I have now looked all over piratebay mininova and googled it. If someone have them in avi or other media files on the computer plz share.

Lobomir (Lobo), Thursday, 6 July 2006 21:36 (nineteen years ago)

you asked for the three parts before two of them had screened!

Roughage Crew (Enrique), Friday, 7 July 2006 08:24 (nineteen years ago)

why is he a lacanian?

He's a contrarian. Oh god, that only makes sense if you know his biography.

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Friday, 7 July 2006 17:03 (nineteen years ago)

two weeks pass...
yo anyone got torrents of this? i'm after part the second.

Roughage Crew (Enrique), Monday, 24 July 2006 07:55 (nineteen years ago)
