I finally got to see this on my holiday. The DVD just kept going, it felt like six hours of stuff, from the cross-country trip to the earlier TV stuff to the film festival footage and whatever.
I had seen a CBC report on it, and read (and really, really loved) Arthur Bradford's book of short stories, Dogwalker.
I found it heartwarming, of course, but also, I don't know, surprisingly so and in unexpected places. Like, there are so many docs and stuff that really go out of their way to give people on the street the chance be a-holes, and I think this nearly, I don't know, could have been like that, but the people on the street, all over America, generally responded to the reporters with warmth and kindness. Like when Robert Bird went in to get a hotel room, I was really expecting something out of Easy Rider to happen, but the woman behind the counter was patient and polite.
