Things to do in Delhi (with your Dad)

So next week I turn 30. I didn't want to do it here in Bangkok where I work, so I decided to go to India and turn 30 at the taj Mahal. It sounds pretentious I know, but it was a drunken whim I hasd about five months ago (meet me on my birthday, I'll be at the taj mahal in the morning) and so I have to do it as everyone said "that's a drunken whim and it will come to nothing". I Anyway, I have a couple of days in Delhi so what should I do? I have been to this city a couple of times before but always in a grimy back packer way and I was usually just passing through. as my Parents have decided to come celebrate my birthday (a drunken whim of my Mum's perhaps) I need some parent safe activites.

I'm sure I'll think of something, I really just like the thread title.

Circle jerk. But you need one more guy.

Idea #2, Thursday, 23 March 2006 04:13 (twenty years ago)

Not sure that demos are what I had in mind. We have enough here in Bangkok at the moment. Idea number 2 I'll ignore completely.

Something more cultural?

The parliament building and the maidan are worth a look as is the red fort, impressive colonial and pre-colonial architechture. The qutb minar complex is also impressive as well.

There's no harm really in getting an auto rikshaw or taxi to take you to all the major sites. 500 rupees was a fair price or an auto rikshaw for a day a few years back.

Get food in the sindhi coffee house in conaught circus. Eat street food and station food anywhere (as long as its cooked).

The railway museum is good. Full of old steam locos and royal rail coaches.

Get the train rather than fly or drive to agra. If you are going that direction you could swing back via varanasi or jodhpur and jaipur.

will pop to Agra, just a day for the taj, and the fort., I have been to rajhistan a couple of times now, and on this visit, we don't have much time, I think an overnight train to Shimila, anywhere with cool weather sounds good at the moment,

Thanks

I was in Delhi last month. The Red Fort is amazing and the Rs100 we paid for a qualified archaeologist to show us around was an absolute bargain. He just approached us as we walked through the bazaar, so watch out for him and his colleagues. The Jama Masjid, India's largest mosque, is very close by and has a great view of the Red Fort as well as being stunning in its own right. Humayun's tomb is also beautiful - it was built for the second Moghul emperor (Shah Jahan's grandfather?) and SJ based the Taj Mahal on it.

My pictures are on flickr - not great, because I was only there for 24 hours and I LEFT MY CAMERA AT THE HOTEL DUH so I took them on my phone. But they're OK.

Don't miss Jantar Mantar, a several-hundred year-old astronomical clock complex. Wild.

I agree with Madchen about Humayun's Tomb. It's spectacular.

Ed is right about taking the train to Agra, too.

I personally wouldn't recommend going to Connaught Circus. Dodgy characters kept appearing out of nowhere to 'befriend' me.

Shimla is great don't miss the coffe house there either. Especially good at this time of year when everyone is on holiday and it bustles. Book a hotel in advance at this time of year as finding one when you get there is very hard. Lovely walks in the hill round about, shady, woods, full of monkeys, the streets are also full of monkeys.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 23 March 2006 10:02 (twenty years ago)

if you go to shimla, you should probably go check out the Sangla valley area as well

Is this the name of the sequel to Things To Do in Denver When You're Dead?

If you get near a telly, beware the two most awful adverts in the world.

Pepsi Cafe Chino: "The kick of cola, the kiss of coffee"
Times Now news channel: "I just died. In a plane crash"

I forgive Times Now, though, because they've put billboards all over Mumbai which read "5 million Mumbaikers defecate on the streets every day ... and we're worried about bird flu?"

Which reminds me, nobody is eating chicken in India.

Thanks everyone. I'll follow some of those up, first I have to persuade my boss to let me go early so I can get to the airport.
