tying knots

do you know how to TIE KNOTS? i can't do ANY besides shoes and necktie. not to slight these knots because they are Real Knots and no joke. even a necktie knot could secure something. but say you had two pieces of rope and needed to tie them together to make one long piece of rope, and it needed to be real strong -- do you even know what that's called, let alone how to do it? i feel like i will always be a Boy until i know a little about tying different kinds of knots.

this is going in the "Culture --> Video Games" category.

also for tying two ropes together: sheepshank, if my memory serves.

Two ropes of differing sizes = sheepshank

Two ropes of the same size = square knot

a six turn grinner, or maybe a tucked half blood knot maybe are my favourites.

I go fishing though, so knots are pretty essential. Palomar knots are good too, the knotless knot even beter!

I don't need to know, I'm the submissive one.

the sheepshank is also good because it allows you to tie knots with no "free end". you dont need to cut the lines that is.

the bowline is an incredibly useful knot, as is the half hitch.

AaronK (AaronK), Thursday, 23 March 2006 19:43 (twenty years ago)

knots rule, basically.

do you make two bunny ears and wrap them around each other like a baby, or do you make a proper shoelace knot with the bunny running round the tree? because two bunny ears = never stays tied.

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 23 March 2006 19:45 (twenty years ago)

hahah MORON!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 23 March 2006 19:47 (twenty years ago)

btw tracer did you get my message? if it's your scarf, i'm gonna tie it in knots.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 23 March 2006 19:49 (twenty years ago)

I used to know a few.. I still can do a bowline and a diamond hitch, probably. They're kind to fun to fuck around with.

andy --, Thursday, 23 March 2006 19:50 (twenty years ago)

Sorry Kyle but I've worn bunny ears and stayed tied.

dr lulu (dr lulu), Thursday, 23 March 2006 19:50 (twenty years ago)

stence i did and i'm so so so glad you found it! It has a couple of holes in it, but it's a good scarf.

Haven't you ever tried self-bondage?

(as I was never a Scout, most of my knowledge of knots comes from the chapter headings in The Shipping News)

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Thursday, 23 March 2006 19:53 (twenty years ago)

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 23 March 2006 19:55 (twenty years ago)

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 23 March 2006 19:58 (twenty years ago)

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 23 March 2006 19:59 (twenty years ago)

what's a "bend"?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 23 March 2006 20:24 (twenty years ago)

yeah i do the bunny ears thing too. i don't know any other way now, and i prevent embarassment by only wearing shoes that fasten via other methods. don't tell anyone.

Kim (Kim), Thursday, 23 March 2006 20:44 (twenty years ago)

Two ropes of differing sizes = sheepshank

Two ropes of differing sizes = Sheet Bend. (like for tying sheets together when climbing out of prison.)

Looks like a square knot almost, but slightly different.
