She's been known to sleep on piles of dry leaves... (papa november), Thursday, 23 March 2006 20:39 (twenty years ago)

uh kate, that's for 99 percent of the population the case. ;-)

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Thursday, 23 March 2006 20:40 (twenty years ago)

I had a buddy ask me this recently (to compare his wages) and I felt it was prying. My protestant folks always told me never to ask or offer this info, it's rude.

andy --, Thursday, 23 March 2006 20:42 (twenty years ago)

In our company's standard contract, discussing how much you earn is an immediate sacking offence.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Thursday, 23 March 2006 20:44 (twenty years ago)

Last year 41K. I'm a waiter. I could have made more but didn't feel like it. Now I regret my sloth.

youngNhung (unclejessjess), Thursday, 23 March 2006 20:45 (twenty years ago)

Last weekend I told a friend how much I earn (because he asked), and then I wished I hadn't.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 23 March 2006 20:45 (twenty years ago)

Ha, such a true stereotype!

i make barely anything, for the industry i am in and compared to my colleagues.

POOP BITCH (Mandee), Thursday, 23 March 2006 20:49 (twenty years ago)

what mandee said.

gbx (skowly), Thursday, 23 March 2006 20:51 (twenty years ago)

I do not make six figures anymore. :(

Dan (Curse You, Internet Bubble) Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 23 March 2006 20:51 (twenty years ago)

I need to start selling plasma.

Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Thursday, 23 March 2006 20:51 (twenty years ago)

I'm perfectly fine with what I make, but once I start discussing it with other people and comparing, I get all bitter and riled up.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 23 March 2006 20:54 (twenty years ago)

I do not make six figures anymore. :(

I do if ".00" counts as two.

I'm more-or-less OK with what I make. A little low for my experience and market, but that may be adjusted upward soon as our office was just recategorized from "medium" to "large" and we were recently acquired by a large, extremely rich public company. Like, in the Fortune 15 large.

93 as of this month + about 15 a year tax-free in tuition reimbursement for grad school

HI TOM! I"M ABOUT TO GO 200,000 IN DEBT. A LITTLE HELP?

PAY U BACK WHEN I'M A DOCTOR, OK.

gbx (skowly), Thursday, 23 March 2006 21:16 (twenty years ago)

usually $9-10k a year

+++, Thursday, 23 March 2006 21:16 (twenty years ago)

I"M ABOUT TO GO 200,000 IN DEBT. A LITTLE HELP?

my advice to you is to take advantage of the various student loan and tuition repayment programs offered by large employers like mine and the united states armed forces, to include the coast guard and the reserves

alternatively, marry well and/or skip the nation

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Thursday, 23 March 2006 21:19 (twenty years ago)

i'm making money like Barry White.

meth lab for doug flutie (sanskrit), Thursday, 23 March 2006 21:20 (twenty years ago)

but i don't wanna join the army!

gbx (skowly), Thursday, 23 March 2006 21:23 (twenty years ago)

I made $12,000 or so before tax last year and that's a definite rekkid for yours truly.

Abbott (Abbott), Thursday, 23 March 2006 21:24 (twenty years ago)

do we count nontaxable dollars made in the trap

+++, Thursday, 23 March 2006 21:25 (twenty years ago)

btw, fuck taxes. I mean, they're easy enough to bear when it's being taken from your paycheck, but when you're freelancing, and have to write up a big old check at the end of the year???? MAY AS WELL JUST SET MY WALLET ON FIRE

gbx (skowly), Thursday, 23 March 2006 21:26 (twenty years ago)

this is how i feel about visiting NYC, btw

gbx (skowly), Thursday, 23 March 2006 21:27 (twenty years ago)

enough to pay rent which is nice considering I'm job less right now.

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Thursday, 23 March 2006 21:27 (twenty years ago)

I don't think Tom ever offers advice that doesn't involve joining the Marines.

Allyzay Rofflesberger (allyzay), Thursday, 23 March 2006 21:27 (twenty years ago)

I haven't filed a tax return in two years, but I don't think I can weasel out of it this year. I don't know how I'm going to pay my SS/Medicare tax in a month, but jail might be an improvement (plenty o' reading time), so fuck it.

Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Thursday, 23 March 2006 21:30 (twenty years ago)

i have paid over $8000 in taxes this year and I haven't even filed for last year yet. then again, i work for the federal government.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Thursday, 23 March 2006 21:31 (twenty years ago)

thought about it once, very briefly. seems a little, uh, LATE now.

"I know! I've already put off medical school for four years, let's put it off for FOUR MORE"

xp Dude, hardly anyone goes to jail for tax fraud. they just ruin your credit! :)

gbx (skowly), Thursday, 23 March 2006 21:31 (twenty years ago)

Too late, suckers!

Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Thursday, 23 March 2006 21:32 (twenty years ago)

I have about $1700 in tax returns coming to me this year *proud*

because I did not earn enough to have to actually pay taxes federal or virginia *sad*

Allyzay Rofflesberger (allyzay), Thursday, 23 March 2006 21:33 (twenty years ago)

I just think how much more I could be making if I had gone into a profession that required a lot of hard work. I am certainly smart enough to be a lawyer or what have you, but I'm really far too lazy, and that's really what it's all about.

I know people (or of people) who are making over 100K because they simply were not lazy. I know a lot of people who make good money are are not as smart as me am.

OH, and in case you didn't hear it elsewhere, tax time is going to be suxy this year. I need a good accountant otherwise I'll owe a good 5-6,000. The life of a waiter!

whiskeytangofoxtrot (unclejessjess), Thursday, 23 March 2006 21:41 (twenty years ago)

I do NOTHING at work NOTHING NOTHING NOTHING, mostly because everyone seems to think that what I do takes a lot longer than it does (i have done little to disabuse them of this), and IF I were to stay on and become a "real" fulltime employee, I'd probably be making what you are, J, and not paying 5000 at the end of the year.

Whip up a resume.

gbx (skowly), Thursday, 23 March 2006 21:48 (twenty years ago)

$180,000

ath (ath), Thursday, 23 March 2006 21:53 (twenty years ago)

In our company's standard contract, discussing how much you earn is an immediate sacking offence.

Christ, why don't they just come out with it? "Discussing how much we shaft you will get you sacked. You will love the Company. You will not question the Company."

stet (stet), Thursday, 23 March 2006 22:00 (twenty years ago)

i bet nobody makes more money in a year than i do. come forward if you do and let us compare and contrast the differences in our annual income.

ath (ath), Thursday, 23 March 2006 22:01 (twenty years ago)

sorry, ath

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 23 March 2006 22:13 (twenty years ago)

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 23 March 2006 22:14 (twenty years ago)

four (4) rilly.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 23 March 2006 22:33 (twenty years ago)

It's academic anyway. Do I make enough to pay my bills, put food on the table, live in a decent place, pursue my expensive hobbies, take vacations, etc? Yes, yes I do. The actual quantity is irrelevant.

phil d. (Phil D.), Thursday, 23 March 2006 23:22 (twenty years ago)

i make more at this job than i ever have and i'm still fucking broke.

team jaxon (jaxon), Friday, 24 March 2006 00:01 (twenty years ago)

Ditto. Apart from the broke thing, that is.

Gatinha (rwillmsen), Friday, 24 March 2006 00:05 (twenty years ago)

I don't have a W2, I just have a number written on a piece of paper (yay 'self-employment'), I have college tuition deductions, mileage deductions, me myself and I, etc.. Should I spring for a TurboTax-like program, or just do it the old-fashioned way?

Tax preparers are out, 'cuz I still hope to weasel my way out completely.

Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Friday, 24 March 2006 01:48 (twenty years ago)

This varies hugely depending where I'm living and what I'm doing.

Andrew (enneff), Friday, 24 March 2006 01:58 (twenty years ago)

In our company's standard contract, discussing how much you earn is an immediate sacking offence.

Ha ha ha ha ha, it's the same over where *I* work at too. It's also why I hardly ever discuss where I work, since I work in a position that actually handles what people in said place of employment are earning. You never know where a supervisor or fellow co-worker is lurking online, etc. What I *can* reveal about what I earn is that it's "enough".

See Me, Repeat Me (Dee the Lurker), Saturday, 25 March 2006 01:45 (twenty years ago)

Finally getting a tax preparer is one of the smartest financial decisions I ever made. I highly recommend it.

Douglas (Douglas), Saturday, 25 March 2006 08:20 (twenty years ago)

I've worked at restaurants where the servers would get in trouble for discussing their take or how their sales were going. This gag order was always directly linked to the fact that everyone was doing poorly and management thought they could convince individual tipped employees that they were either having a bad night or were the only ones not making money because they sucked.

No matter what kind of money I make, I maintain the same lifestyle, which is curious. In NC I made about half of what I make in Chicago, but I still live only very very slightly higher on the hog. I guess the difference is in the leeway I have when I earn more money. The pendulum swings a little wider when I make more money, though I stay in relatively the same lifestyle. But in NC I always thought that if I could earn 2X the money I would travel overseas and buy good wine for my collection. This has not happened.
