Just listening to one right now and trying to think of something else that causes so much disturbance for such little benefit.

Well, that's that then.

Don't some places have laws vs. the use of them after certain times? I'm sure my friends in Toronto told me they had problems with the German Embassy (?) using them at night and tried to use a local law vs. them but came up against diplomatic immunity or some such.

I'm only vaguelu remembering this story so some or all of the facts may be false.

Every morning I drop my wife off at work in DC, then drive back into Arlington. Each time, there are workers on 21st St. using leaf blowers along the sidewalks, blowing them into street, just so that they can be blown back onto the sidewalk by passing cars. It's like a perfect visual refutation of the value theory of labor.

phil d. (Phil D.), Friday, 24 March 2006 08:19 (twenty years ago)

i for one think gardeners should pick up leaves with their hands

vahid (vahid), Friday, 24 March 2006 08:20 (twenty years ago)

barring that, one of those claw-things that people use to grab recyclables out of the trash. we'll pay them by the leaf.

The Leafblower: The Worst Invention in History?

Three years ago I'd have said yes. Now it's a tie with the too-loud attention-whore novelty ringtone.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Friday, 24 March 2006 11:21 (twenty years ago)

Yes they are devices that were definateyl made popular by landscapers who needed more work to do. They are pointless. They might as well be zappin gthe THetans with secret ray guns

Mr Jones (Mr Jones), Friday, 24 March 2006 12:03 (twenty years ago)

Novelty ringtones are infintely worse than leafblowers unless I have a hangover.

Leaf blowers are awesome for yard work. They just get a bad rap by the people who use them to blow shit from the gutter of the road into the middle of the street.

don weiner (don weiner), Friday, 24 March 2006 12:42 (twenty years ago)

WHat about the people that use them to blow old ladies down

Mr. Que, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 19:24 (eighteen years ago)

Those things are hilarious. They should put a lip balm on top and an LED flashlight on the side.

Abbott, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 20:05 (eighteen years ago)

Those are moderately useful for doing editing, especially if you do it on the run -- you mark pages and flag them without needing to carry around two items!

nabisco, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 20:08 (eighteen years ago)

More useful on a blue or red pen, though, obviously

nabisco, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 20:08 (eighteen years ago)

I mean geez, it's like you guys have never done copyediting on the subway

nabisco, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 20:10 (eighteen years ago)

i wish the pen was better. and the post it note was further up on the pen, towards the non writing part of the pen.

Mr. Que, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 20:10 (eighteen years ago)

i have copyedited on the bus and the subway, but i don't use stickies to copy edit so maybe that's my basic problem--plus i am very picky about the way pens feel

Mr. Que, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 20:10 (eighteen years ago)

No, I hate fat pens like that, too. I rarely edit anything huge enough to need lots of stickies, but if you're working with a 500 page stack, or something, flagging things is ... necessary. Maybe they could wrap them around a thinner pen (with a better ball and more gel ink)

nabisco, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 20:13 (eighteen years ago)

i would totally use that pen and all its functions! esp if there was also lip balm and a flashlight! and a mini taser!

rrrobyn, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 20:19 (eighteen years ago)

but yeah i never use thick/fat pens like that. pencil width is ideal width but not a lot of pens are that thin. also yeah where wld the stickies go, i don't know, maybe on a wrist cuff <-- NERDDS

rrrobyn, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 20:21 (eighteen years ago)

xpost to leafblowers - in college, i worked at the theater in town that showed rocky horror on friday at midnight. yeah, we used them to blow toast, playing cards and toilet paper out of the rows and into the aisles.

i hated those rocky horror fuckers.

so, yeah, useful.

molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 20:22 (eighteen years ago)

also yeah where wld the stickies go, i don't know, maybe on a wrist cuff <-- NERDDS

rrrobyn, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 22:05 (eighteen years ago)

omgosh that post-it note oen is hilarious

but i have to be honest, i love leaf blowers. very invigorating

Surmounter, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 22:08 (eighteen years ago)

seventeen years pass...

Anyone have a brand/model rec? Looking to clear my folks' gutters and front walk. Using at a reasonable hour, naturally. Leaning towards a battery model, as their house may/may not have the exterior outlets to support a corded model.

Ha, that is excellent. Apparently no one takes the piles away after blowing around her?

If I have a choice between resetting a ladder every four feet to hand clean their gutters and using a leaf blower, opting for the latter.

Thought we had a "homeowner questions" thread somewhere, but didn't search hard for it.

I was trying to teach a French class the other day over the very loud noise of someone leafblowing across the street, and I expressed some mild annoyance that one dude clearing leaves could disrupt classes in half a high school. One of my students immediately turned to the window and yelled "SILENCE!" in French. This did nothing to stop the leafblower, but it cracked me up.

Lily Dale, Sunday, 12 October 2025 01:46 (eight months ago)

Has there ever been a decent noise band called Leafblower? Seems like it'd be a natural.

henry s, Monday, 13 October 2025 12:50 (eight months ago)

Or, has anybody ever played a leafblower onstage, like maybe Neubauten?

henry s, Monday, 13 October 2025 12:52 (eight months ago)

lol at the first two posts itt

... first three in fact

I found myself leafblowing yesterday, although it was a shop vac and not a real leafblower. The back and side of my condo abuts a rock wall and after a while you get a couple feet of leaves and dirt accumulating between them which (if you live in karst-rich Central Texas) becomes a scorpion shantytown so I decided to blow it all outta there.
