ILX search - some questions for YOU LOT

If you use the little search boxy in the top right (for reg'd users) or the keyword search in the "Search" link at the bottom of the page, i have 2 related questions for you:

1 - what do you think it does?

2 - what do you want it to do.

be as specific as you can be bothered. in each case conside the case of multiple words, and "phrases in quotes". whether you are thinking about entire threads, or about specific answers/posts in those threads.

Ta.

(Just reconsidering how to rejig the code, as there is some shenanigans in there that i can see the point of, but it's costly in terms of server load/response time, and i'm guessing we'd do better off without)

Actually I haven't seen that there for a while myself.

of course, i should have added: if you have the "Add a Google Search box to every page" user setting ticked

I don't think I've ever searched for multiple words or if I did it took way too long and turned up nothing usable and that's why I don't do it any more. Also because I'm not sure whether multiple words defaults to AND or OR and I don't know whether it recognizes quotes.

little box:
1/2 - searches titles and content for "exact phrase" or All The Words.

Search page:
search by title and/or user and/or keywords

it'd be good to move the search link to the top of every page, rather than the bottom.

I agree with Ken C.

... except it might encourage people to search more than is really necessuh...

"Of course it's necessuh! If I say it's necessuh, it's necessuh!"

If I want to find a thread on new york hotels, I go to the keyword search, tick the "messages" radio button, and type: "new york" hotels

Naturally my hope is that it turns up thread in which individual posts contain the 2 search terms.

What would be useful, and I have no idea if it is a current option, is to be able to use multiple terms (New York, NYC, NY, Gotham or whatever) and get results for any of the above, rather an only threads that include ALL the terms.

I'd be interested in helping speed up the built-in search if you are looking for help in that dept.

Well, the keyword search has the little click for threads or messages, which I kind of don't get. If I want a thread title with something in it, I'll use the search futher down the page about just thread titles.

I don't know what it does about quote and phrases. I would like to be able to differentiate that if I type in rolling london walking I would want to bring up random posts that happen to mention those, like someone saying on the rolling London dancing thread that they will be *walking* to the venue. However I would like to be able to exclude those by typing "rolling london walking" and find out where we're going on Good Friday.

Sorry, people are talking way too loud in here and I cannot concentrate on anything.

I would like if there was an option to use the boxy to find threads by any word in the thread title. But the Google searches can't restrict the results to words in titles, can they?

Is p3r.net down? WTF?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 24 March 2006 16:29 (twenty years ago)

yeah. i only use ilx's search for thread titles. keyword searches are just too painfully slow and doesn't give me what i need.

that's what i said to google :( they never replied to me

ken c (ken c), Friday, 24 March 2006 16:35 (twenty years ago)

Same as Ken: I use the ILX search for titles only.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 25 March 2006 15:19 (twenty years ago)

1 - I imagine it searches for keywords anywhere in the thread. I have no idea if is AND or OR.

2 - I would mildly prefer it to search thread titles? It could do that already though! I wouldn't know.

Is p3r.net down? WTF?

It's working fine for me.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Saturday, 25 March 2006 17:54 (twenty years ago)

I wish ILX search didn't have the rule that all the words in the search have to be four letters or more. XTC, ne1?

Abbott (Abbott), Saturday, 25 March 2006 18:07 (twenty years ago)

I too have found title/subject searches usually work well, but you need to be sure the word you're looking for is in said subject. I've tried more complex searches like selecting a username and a keyword, and it sits there thinking for so long I usually give up.
