Every generation has its Columbine?

I think William Lowe has pretty impressive peephole skillz if he can see stuff that detailed from across the road.

StanM (StanM), Saturday, 25 March 2006 20:17 (twenty years ago)

... but yeah, that's a pretty grim story.

StanM (StanM), Saturday, 25 March 2006 20:26 (twenty years ago)

"party culture"?

Yawn (Wintermute), Saturday, 25 March 2006 20:32 (twenty years ago)

William Lowe, 59, who lives across the street, said he heard six shots fired shortly after his alarm went off at 7 a.m. He looked through the peephole of his door to see people scattering from the home, some with faces painted and hair dyed - "part of their party culture," according to Seattle Police spokesman Rich Pruitt.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 25 March 2006 20:42 (twenty years ago)

Does he mean this?

Um, I was just on 14th and Madison last night at a friend's b-day party... just blocks away. That part of town, just FYI, is very much NOT a bad part of town at all...

I'm almost fearing that I'll know one of the victims, as I've been to that exact area before to buy a theremin from a friend of mine who lives in that area, who's in his early 20s. :(

Yoo Doo Nut (donut), Saturday, 25 March 2006 22:01 (twenty years ago)

(Not that it makes it more acceptable if it WAS a bad part of town, etc. obviously... )

Yoo Doo Nut (donut), Saturday, 25 March 2006 22:02 (twenty years ago)

Also, I think every person in his/her early 20s has "face paint" (i.e. probably goth looking, *gasp*) and has dyed hair. These "details" shed zero light on any "sub-culture" for what it's worth.

Can't wait for the kids/gun control/punks debate to start making the papers.... *shakes head*

Yoo Doo Nut (donut), Saturday, 25 March 2006 22:05 (twenty years ago)

The details are indeed the usual folderol. It's the type of folk-demon approach one expects.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 25 March 2006 22:14 (twenty years ago)

holy shit this is horrible

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Saturday, 25 March 2006 22:21 (twenty years ago)

the part that scares me is the "warehouse promoters" part... I know lots of friends who put on shows in big spaces, not necessarily "warehouses", but you know, this is CNN-ese we're talking here. :(

Yoo Doo Nut (donut), Saturday, 25 March 2006 22:25 (twenty years ago)

OK, more details as to the "subculture"

The girl, her boyfriend Jesse Mullens and another friend had gone to what Thorne called a "zombie rave," a hard-core electronic dance party, in Seattle last night.

In his phone call, Mullens told Thorne that after the rave they went to a house on Capitol Hill for an after-party. As the couple and their friend were preparing to leave the gunman barged into the home, Mullens said.

Suzanne had gone back inside, possibly to get something, she said.

Mullens told Thorne he heard a lot of gunshots. He thought Suzanne was stuck somewhere in the house with the shooter between her and the door.

"She shouldn't have gone to the rave. I've never approved of those things," Thorne said. "The young kids just don't get it. I just hope to God she's alive," she said crying. "And if she is, she's grounded for life."

Oh, great.

Yoo Doo Nut (donut), Saturday, 25 March 2006 22:28 (twenty years ago)

Never mind there was a fucked up kid who shouldn't have had a gun in the first place... WE CAN'T LET "ZOMBIE RAVES" THRIVE! *fuck fuck fuck*

A good friend of mine is dating a woman who knew at least two of the victims quite well. What I've heard from him is that the killer was a right-wing survivalist type.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Sunday, 26 March 2006 13:23 (twenty years ago)

Some more details, but not many.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 26 March 2006 20:56 (twenty years ago)

From the Stranger blog, an interview with one of the managers of the complex that this Kyle Huff fellow and his twin brother lived at. The kicker is at the end:

A SWAT team came in, Gray said, evacuated the floor that the Huff brothers’ unit was on, and after searching their apartment emerged with ammunition and guns. Then, she said, Kane Huff came home.

“He acted like he had no idea what was going on,” Gray told me. “I don’t think he knew his brother was dead. I don’t think he knew anything at all.”

The police then took Kane Huff away for questioning.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 26 March 2006 21:14 (twenty years ago)

Another cogest line:

When they trace the weapons used in the Capitol Hill shooting back to their original source, will the original source be an under-regulated gun show?

There's a hint that the SPD chief might be one who is in favor of passing more strict gun control measures. If this gun is traced back to any survivalists or gun-liberty group run show, prepare for the gun control issue to blow sky high.

Update from slog:

Update from the SPD
Posted by ERICA C. BARNETT at 05:19 PM
The police department, as predicted, had little new information at today’s press conference. They did confirm that the person they interviewed (i.e. Kane Huff, the twin brother of alleged shooter Kane Huff) was questioned and released, though SPD spokesman Sean Whitcomb would not confirm any names, including the shooter’s or the victims’, until the medical examiner gives police a positive ID.

In other news, police said the alleged shooter’s truck contained a massive arsenal of ammunition and weapons, including several hundred rounds of rifle, shotgun and handgun ammo; several banana clips loaded with more rifle ammo; a rifle; and a machete. “The amount of ammo this suspect had, the arsenal of weaponry that he had, is cause for serious concern,” Whitcomb said.

“Everything the witnesses have told us indicates that this suspect walked into the house shooting and didn’t stop shooting,” Whitcomb continued. “We do know that there were a lot of people in this house who were very frightened and doing everything they could to flee. Could it have been worse? With the way this suspect was armed, the answer is yes.”

I assume Erica meant to type "Kyle" instead of "Kane" twice.

For those with a bent for history: I've noted the various mentions of this having been the worst such instance of mass murder in Seattle since something called the Wah Mee massacre in 1983. Searched around and found this, which discusses it in great detail.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 27 March 2006 00:47 (twenty years ago)

I know people are at a loss when stuff like this happens (esp. victims' families), but really, blaming raves? Murder sprees can happen anywhere - the post office, Luby's, playgrounds, Damageplan concerts, etc.

Americans have been indiscriminately shooting strangers en masse for over 50 years: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Howard_Unruh
