i know that to some they may seem like the k-mart of herbal teas, and yes i keep different kinds of loose-leaf tea about as well, but darnit if they don't make some really good teas. (how many of you are tea junkies anyway? raise your hands.) a recent look at their website (www.celestialseasonings.com) reveals that they make a bewildering variety of teas--in the 100s.

so, recommendations/antirecommendations for these and other herbal teas demanded!

amateurist0, Tuesday, 28 March 2006 06:30 (twenty years ago)

Horrible cat's pee for '70s hippies - put me off herbal tea for almost my whole entire life. That and Hearth&Heather are just too gross to drink.

I like Dr. Stuarts and hate anything with chamomile in it.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 06:38 (twenty years ago)

It's not my favorite tea (although I did just have some of their chamomile) but I have gone on their factory tour, which was pretty fun, especially the surprisingly painful peppermint room!

Haha xpost.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 06:46 (twenty years ago)

also, their "tummy mint" makes really good iced tea -- brew up a big pot and refrigerate overnight. minty fresh.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 06:47 (twenty years ago)

Oh I miss these. They were/are great. Tension Tamer was my favourite, just for the whacked-out-on-chamomile hippie lady sitting on top of the dragon artwork.

There was a berry flavour that was wonderful, too.

while under the influence of something a few years ago we opened a box to find a sparkly shiny fridge magnet with a panda in a blue dress pouring tea. it was like finding GOLD.

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 16:52 (twenty years ago)

I find something very endearing about the way my grandma serves it, she obviously loves it and thinks that it is a bit of an "occaission"....it's pretty good too!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 16:57 (twenty years ago)

I got a big box of boxes of CS tea a few weeks ago. WEIRD FLAVOURS like Juniper Root Beer and Sanskrit Rocky Road.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 16:58 (twenty years ago)

actually, more like Strawberry Zinger, but that's not as weird...

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 16:58 (twenty years ago)

The artwork on the boxes is like mind blowing. I like their Sleepytime and Chamomeow teas!

There's a spicy chai one that's good (is that the one with the tiger on the box?), also the Tension Tamer's not bad.

Jaq (Jaq), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 17:03 (twenty years ago)

I liked Lemon Zinger as a kid. I haven't had it in ages, so I'm not sure about now. Unlike many, apparently, I like tisane and I drink Chamomille and especially Verveine infusions somewhat regularly.

I like the zingers, but I've noticed lately that their peppermint makes my mouth bitter and dry almost immediately. Maybe this is just what peppermint does? I'm disappointed, though, because I love the taste of peppermint tea.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 17:06 (twenty years ago)

i bought that a few months ago; you're right, it's nice.

I remember trying something vanilla within the last few years that was absolutely vile. I think the chai is okay? I know we had this around when I was a kid but I don't remember what kind!

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 17:24 (twenty years ago)

Totally love Tension Tamer & dragon + chillaxing damsel on box art. ALSO: the Peach Passion is shockingly flavorful considering that most fruit teas smell great and taste a little bit like mucky water - it actually lives up to it's delicious wafty odor esp with a spoonful of honey added to round it off. Red Zinger, though, reminds me of "red pop". Like, BE MORE SPECIFIC PLZ.

Bengal Spice is the chai-like one I was thinking of. Very peppery/gingery/clove. There's a couple flavors on their site that sound really awful to me: Canadian Vanilla Maple and any of the fruit ones (blueberry, apple, peach anything - hm, no thanks).

Jaq (Jaq), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 17:36 (twenty years ago)

True Blueberry tea is pretty good. It has a bear is a basket of blueberries rowing down a raging river! There's even a happy otter holding a blueberry. IT"S CRAZY STUFF HERE.

Bengal Spice is really the only hot beverage I've found that has the depth and complexity of flavour of coffee, but without the side effects(insommnia, tooth-grinding etc.)

I'm also enjoying South African Red Bush (Roibosch) tea quite a lot of late. The packaging on the eleven O'Clock brand is a masterpeice of primitive commercial art.

this tea sounds genius! mostly because i love fake banana flavor.

Apple Banana Chamomile Tea
Traditionally, a warming cup of chamomile tea gently soothes digestion, calms a restless mind and promotes restful sleep. We add a welcome light touch of apple and banana to create our distinctive Apple Banana Chamomile Herb Tea. You?ll look forward to each cup of this fruity, floral tea to help smooth the ups and downs of everyday.

http://coopgrocer.com/pics/CS_TensionTamer.jpg

Tension tamer is the slightly sweet yum! My boif came home from the grocery one day and whipped out a box of the stuff. "LOOK---a LADY and a DRAGON!" Then he made up a song about the lady and the dragon to the tune of Maddy Prior's "The Once and Furture King." So for that reason alone I love this tea.

The peppermint is good, but I imagine it's pretty hard to screw up tthrowing some peppermint leaves in a bag. Avoid at all costs the "holiday tea" featuring the cracked out ginerbread men running around a cottage. It is like drinking a particularly cheap potpourri.

Abbott (Abbott), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 18:07 (twenty years ago)

I like the complete dischord of real life b-vitamin concern next to a fucking surprised looking dragon.

Allyzay Rofflesberger (allyzay), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 18:09 (twenty years ago)

not that dragons don't need their folic acid or anything like that.

Allyzay Rofflesberger (allyzay), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 18:10 (twenty years ago)

Dragons drink a hearty ale for their folic acid.

Abbott (Abbott), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 18:10 (twenty years ago)

Yes, he wishes they would stop resting things on his nose. It tickles, and they do not make a tea for that.

Roastaroma, I mean.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 20:01 (twenty years ago)

Yes! I can't deal with coffee but I miss the taste and the robustness, which is hard to find in other decaffeinated teas.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 20:02 (twenty years ago)

omg, I can't stop laughing at Ally's bit about the vitamin B and the surprised dragon - I'm glad I'm not trying to drink, like, tea or anything.

I've tried a few different kinds of rooibos or however it's spelled. They were all good for two sips and then bleagh, too much.

I agree with S1ocki and his insightful commentary on the Apple&Banana tea. Unless the cover image is a monkey swinging in an apple tree in the middle of a rolling sparkly ocean on the moon.

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 20:30 (twenty years ago)

I drink a lot of herbal tea but pref. licorice, ginger, or rooibos. the 'refresh' tazo tea with spearmint is nice. Mariage Freres has some rooibos teas that are really good. fruit teas are gross though.

Why can't you drink decaf coffee?

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 20:52 (twenty years ago)

Decaf coffee still has caffeine in it. Although you know, I probably could, I'm just being cautious. I feel like I've talked about this on ILX too much.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 20:56 (twenty years ago)

decaf has 3mg of caffeine per cup, as i noted on the "defend the indefensible: decaf" thread.

jbr, Tuesday, 28 March 2006 20:58 (twenty years ago)

At the factory you can see the actual paintings they use on these boxes. I've seen the dragon painting, oh yes. Even freaker when you can see the whole thing -- there are bits of the painting that don't fit in the oval, they get cropped. I wish I could tell you that mad kinky sex was happening in the corners, though.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 21:26 (twenty years ago)

Chamomile and tension tamer are pretty good--my mom and grandmother always drink these. They will tend to buy a box of an odd flavor every once in a while (eg strawberry zinger), drink half a cup and complain about it, and then it ends up sitting in the pantry and I recognize that same box on visits home years later.

My new favorite, ubiquitous in Egypt where they call it karkady, is hibiscus tea.

Hibiscus tea is great! I've never had a celestial seasonings version of it though--is it true that it's used as a base for a lot of other herbal flavors? I used to drink this brand all the time in college:

http://www.bavariasausage.com/uploads/products/sm_pompadour_hibiscus.jpg

(that link begins with "bavaria sausage" wtf)

sgs (sgs), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 21:50 (twenty years ago)

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 21:56 (twenty years ago)

I really like Roastaroma! And I can never seem to find it.

It doesn't so much "taste like coffee" as just have a similar kind of robust feel to it.
